Let's hear it from all the punks...
::rocker::
-
If I hadn't been a punk before I went in, I doubt I would've made it through the program I was in with my mind intact. Singing songs of defiance and revolution was the only thing I could do while I was there to try and keep myself sane. Reminding myself whenever possible that no matter what they tried to do, they couldn't take away my integrity.
I've never respected or accepted any authority whatsoever, so I never willingly drank the kool aid during my stay. I swallowed just enough to convince them I was cooperating. The one thing that kept me going was the little punk rock jukebox I had in the back of my head. Punk rock is what kept me in touch with what I believed in, and gave me the strength to hold on to my beliefs when those around me were giving them up just for the sake of a few creature comforts.
Blood For Blood said it best:
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck society too
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck the world because
my kind, my kind, my kind belong nowhere
My kind, my kind, my kind are hated and feared
We all started as someone with a chance to make our way
Sometimes the world was cold but we waited for the better days
We watched the years go by and nothing seemed to change
We waited, hoped and prayed as the hard times felt like stinging rain
Well now that hope is gone, somewhere it turned to rage
Hatred, violence, booze and crime,
sometimes it seemed the only way (to get by)
I always knew I'd never make it cause I'm twisted in the brain
But I swear to you all right now that I'll never live like the ones that made me hate
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck society too
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck the world because
my kind, my kind, my kind belong nowhere
My kind, my kind, my kind are hated and feared
I know I'm going nowhere and I been on a losin' streak
and a scumbag, zero and anti-hero are all you think of me (and you're right)
I know I'm going nowhere and I been on a losin streak
and lowlife, loser and dead-end cruiser are all you think of me (but I say)
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck society too
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck the world because
my kind, my kind, my kind belong nowhere
My kind, my kind, my kind are hated and feared
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck mankind
My kind, my kind, my kind are hated and feared
Wasted youth, I never had all the chances
Wasted youth, I never had no savin' grace
Wasted youth, yeah I've made a few mistakes
Wasted youth, but how long will I have to pay?
So, some of you were born into happiness and wealth
While some of us were born to a life of hell
And some of us were lost and some of us were found
but most of us were beaten by life to the ground
And maybe I'll never see the day that I win
but I'll always have time for a beer with my friends
We'll fight everybody and the world 'till the end
and if you fuck around with us you'll get your head kicked in!
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck society too
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you and fuck the world because
my kind, my kind, my kind belong nowhere
My kind, my kind, my kind are hated and feared

I can relate, as they say. What were some of your punk jukebox favs? One of mine was "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" by the Dead Kennedys... I was able to go thru pretty much that entire album in my head.

Casualties - Authority Is Dead
We don't need no law and order
What happened to the freedom punk gave us
What happened to the no rules class
What happened to the individuality that punk gave us
Authority is dead think for yourself
They come in the name of peace and hate
Trying to brainwash the youth of today
You better watch out with what you say
If you dont think like them they'll make you pay
Authority is dead think for yourself
Always getting hassled by the man in blue
For looking different and not following the rules
Always looked down upon by the man in the suit
I'd rather me be than be a 9 to 5 fool
We don't follow any rules or laws
We are the ones you hate the most
We don't follow and leaders or groups
We are the punks of today you can't use as tools
You were given the right to choose and not to follow any trends
So think for yourself
You were given that right to choose
So just be yourself and don't follow any rule

When I got sent in, I was mainly into a lot of local Long Island stuff, as well as shit like GBH, Operation Ivy, Blanks 77, Dead Kennedys, Leftover Crack, Dropkick Murphys, Rancid, NOFX, Blood For Blood, a bunch of skapunk shit, and some smatterings of metal. Now basically I listen to almost anything and everything from street punk to hip hop to jazz to funk, etc. The only shit I hate is pop, classic rock, straightedge hardcore, metalcore, or any of that incomprehensible wannabe deathmetal shit, emo, pop punk, and garth brooks type country (Give me Johnny Cash, or something else with some actual grit. If you think that pop music from a guy with a cowboy hat and a fake southern accent counts then fuck you and the horse you rode in on, and sucked off with your inbred sister/mother).
How bout you, Froderik? Or anyone else who'd like to sign off on this one.

I'm pretty much with ya there, though I have a weakness for classic rock. For instance, I just thoroughly enjoyed listening to Exile On Main Street the other day for the 50 millionth time. Fucking great album for the most part. I'm not all that picky about genre; for me it's more about a good song..etc.
