The planning for Saturday's protest was shrouded in secrecy with last minute releases given to the press. Hundreds of former Straight clients never even knew there was going to be a protest. Still over 20 protesters showed up, most of whom had never been associated with Straight. Is it time to stop the secrecy so as to increase the number of protesters? Is it time for the Uhuru and the Straight crowd to compare notes? If the Florida Holocaust Museum won't deal with the problem and if Mel Sembler won't let the press cover the story, then perhaps the next protest (should there be a next) should be expanded in scope to include a protest of the local media as well as Holocaust centers beyond Florida. Perhaps people from the Simon Wisenthal Center or the National Holocaust Museum could persuade the board members of the Florida Holocaust Museum to deal with the matter in an honorable way while the Washington Post or New York Times could embarrass the Saint Petersburg Times into covering the news.

This site will give you all the information needed to reserve a camping space at one of the best campgrounds around in the Pinellas County area.  The fees are only $27.50 a night.  There are also two KOA campground sites. One is in North Pinellas, one in Seminole/Bay Pines.  Unless God is pissed at you, the weather should be in the low '60's dipping into the '50's at night with highs in the mid '70's hell, I will even split canoe rental with anyone that comes down.

I did my time in KHK, so I had never seen the symbol before. What about the heart's design makes it a symbol for Straight or for being drug free?

Of course. It has a coat of arms look about it. Crusader-like, brazenly virtuous. Unconditional love with a spike shooting through it. But what is the branching out at the tail-end of the spike supposed to represent?

I hope I'm not belaboring the question. It's just such an ominous-looking symbol, especially the way the black sides of the heart curve upwards like snakes. Did they plaster this symbol near the seven steps in Straight? I'm glad I never had this kind of distorted, black psychology forced upon me in KHK.

Believe me, the logo was the least of the "distorted, black psychology" that was forced on us in Straight.  I bet KHK had plenty of their own, too, without the logo.

From what I can tell, the only difference between KHK and Straight was the severity and frequency of physical abuse. I can remember staff members coming back from visits to Straight in Milford and telling us how good we had it, how lucky we were that our parents had not decided to put us in Straight. They would describe in detail the abused kids they'd witnessed, how this one had a bandage on his nose and that one had a broken arm. They portrayed Straight as an uncompromising and brutal environment, where copping out could get one a black eye or a bloody nose and where unmotivated arms were never tolerated for a second.

They used Straight as a tool with which to frighten us into submission. We were always just a step away from being "court ordered" there. I used to picture it as the darkest of all possible worlds, a place where escape was all but impossible and rebellion was met with unspeakable punishment.

Discovering years later that the counselors at KHK were not exaggerating has been enlightening to say the least. This is not to say that no physical abuse occurred in KHK. And the psychological abuse was definitely on par with Straight. But I can't imagine having physical pain added to that excruciating regimen of mind control. Many of you are much tougher than I?ll ever be.

Reading over my words, I now realize that the abuses in Straight were common knowledge as early as 1983. Everyone in KHK knew enough to utilize this knowledge to the fullest. The head psychologist at the time repeatedly used the Straight threat. She must have known what was going on in Milford, and yet did nothing. Shame on her for her complicity and inaction, as well as everyone else who knew and did nothing.

Strangely, I do not remember Penny Walker. I know that she was there in 1984, but cannot conjure a face from memory. Does anyone know her arrival date at KHK?

The name of the head psychologist was Kathy Ballinger. This spelling may or may not be correct. At the time, she seemed to be running the show with total authority. She supervised all intakes, conducted parent interviews, and occasionally watched over rap sessions. She had to have known about the abuse in Straight because she frequently used its existence as an intimate psychological weapon against noncompliance.

20 sculptures to convey beauty tinged by tragedy

Butterfly art will pay homage to Holocaust victims and go toward ensuring that modern generations don't turn a blind eye toward genocide.

By JILL ANN PERRINO
Published November 27, 2005
PALM HARBOR - Sculptor David Kracov's work is usually filled with lighthearted, familiar characters like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse.

But for one recent project, his inspiration was decidedly more serious.

Kracov is one of 21 Tampa Bay artists who are creating 20 butterfly-themed sculptures for Butterflies of Hope, a collaboration of the Outdoor Arts Foundation, the Florida Holocaust Museum and Westfield shopping malls.

The project, meant to raise public awareness and understanding of the Holocaust, conveys beauty, but the sort that is fragile and tinged with tragedy.

"I had to keep taking breaks," Kracov said of the 10 weeks he spent on the project. His project, made of polymer clay, depicts hundreds of butterflies escaping from a train boxcar.

Each of the butterflies represents 1,893 children killed in the Holocaust, he said.

"The number of children who died is inconceivable," Kracov said.

Kracov said he is licensed to create characters for Disney and Warner Bros. He incorporated some of the companies' familiar characters into his piece. The characters stand with their heads bowed as a cloud of butterflies soar toward freedom.

All of the artwork will eventually be auctioned off to benefit the Florida Holocaust Museum, in St. Petersburg, and the Outdoor Arts Foundation.

A symbol of hope and freedom, the butterfly is particularly significant for the museum as it prepares for its gala, "To Life, To Children, To Hope," early next year.

"We want to honor the 1.5-million children of the Holocaust as well as the children of modern-day genocide," said Shelly Mizrahi, director of marketing and communications at the museum.

The project aims to teach children tolerance, diversity and the inherent worth of humans through education about the Holocaust.

For the project, some of the bay area's most celebrated artists were invited to either create an original butterfly sculpture or use a precut wooden butterfly as a canvas. The finished butterflies represent a wide variety of styles and media.

The project has been an emotional experience for Tampa artist Mary Frankle, who is creating a butterfly in honor of her husband's parents, who were Holocaust survivors.

"It's mind-boggling what my in-laws went through at such a young age," she said.

The piece will have a collage of photos of her in-laws' relatives who perished in the Holocaust. She was especially eager to pay tribute to her mother-in-law, who died recently.

"It is a gift from God to me that I'm able to create this," she said, "so that her story is not lost and so her suffering is not forgotten."
