"Newcomers" were required to be trailed at all times by a series of "oldcomers," who literally were to keep a finger through the newcomer's belt loop at all times -- even when the newcomer went to the bathroom. "Therapy" consisted of mainly sitting straight for 10 hours a day, confessing sins. A teen who wasn't sufficiently enthusiastic in his or her confession would be thrown to the floor and immobilized, often for hours.

Ok. Nobody had fun at straight, but the exagerations and often outright lies are not helping anybody win over anti straight sentiment.
Nobody was held by the beltloop while using the bathroom.

When I was in straight, if you made eye contact with a girl you got confronted, not restrained. I never saw anyone get restrained for slouching either (although I got some knuckles to the back, which sucked)
If someone ever called a girl a slut or whore when she was talking about a sex incident, they would have been in deep shit. I did hear of a staff member accusing a girl of being a whore, but I never witnessed anything like that.

- although, say you were slouching and not motivating, then they put two phasers next to you to force you to do it, sooner or later you are going to lose it since people have their hands on you. That's when you get restrained.
As for dressing boys in drag, I can believe that, they did some fucked up humiliation stuff in Straight, too.
That is a 2001 article. What a shame.
What has got me is that looking around at professional child abusers who used to work for Straight, I see they are still abusing children or else they are abusing older people.
What about Miller Newton's goons, those strange looking men who accompany him and so on? Newton is a practised cult leader of about twenty-five years, right? Well what does anyone think is going on now? How has he got those people under his thumb now? I don't know the story except for the gossip I read here about them, but I am highly suspicious. What if Newton is some secret option for them to get out of serving time on drug charges? That is just a wild speculation.
Newton, Margolis, Ross, Sembler, Riddile - these people are dangerous child abusers. Even Suzanne Byrd Hardmann still works in the "drug counselor" industry.

I really don't believe that anyone would have been punished by being dressed in drag. There's no way anyone could justify that as therapy. I know some bad things happened, and I'd like to know the truth. But there is a lot of b.s. floating around too.

I was in LIFE Program when George Ross was there.
Everything above happened to me,except the "10 hrs of confessions" (I was a misbehaver,I never confessed anything),and being dressed up like a girl.All of the other stuff happened at LIFE Program Sarasota/Osprey Florida.

Now that I think of it, there were times when someone who refused to motivate would be surrounded by two bigger guys who would try to make his hands motivate. This would often turn into a fight with restraining.
This wasn't done with brand new people, but I remember it happening on some occasions.
I don't see how someone could be holding your belt loop WHILE you are using the bathroom - but that's splitting hairs.
If anyone has ever witnessed someone being forced to dress as a girl - or something else as radical as that, please post.
A lot of my memory of straight is not clear (suppressed maybe), and I have never been as anti straight as the members here, but I am starting to wonder if I haven't been wrong. I am starting to wonder if it isn't important to start to heal, even 20 some odd years later. I suffer from extreem anxiety among other things,and have always blamed genetics and dumb luck. Now I am starting to wonder.

That would not be good for anyone if it's true.
I don't think I ever saw/heard that at straight, although someone told me of an incident where a staffer held a picture of the abuser up to the girl and said she was ****'s whore. Which is a terrible thing to do to anyone, kid/adult, but especially a kid. (esp. when it's abuse, not promiscuity)

I remember how mean that guy was to everyone except one kid, Dennis D*****. Dennis was a nice kid and he was good looking (no- I'm not gay). But whenever Dean did a rap, he was either tearing someone a new a**hole, or being really super nice to Dennis. Even as a kid I could only conclude that Dean was either really tight with Dennis's parents, or had a crush on him. I must have been right. That is FREEKY!
Is that for real? I mean, someone could creat a yahoo account, put his name and pic on it. I don't know if I could call the bar thing hypocritical, because people change and maybe would be against all drugs and alcohol, then decide to drink and smog out. But he was an adult. I guess the bar thing isn't such a big deal, suprising though - DOES MS. BIRD KNOW ABOUT THIS???? He should get a refresher or something.

Really? I did. More like, they'd solicit the torid details of our sexual experience and fantasies in girls' rap. Then staff would pull it out in group when the girl was getting confronted for something.
I clearly remember when they read my diary in front of group. It was a cute pink one w/ some very little girlish print on the front and an ineffectual lock and clasp. My mom gave it to me. I knew better than to write anything very personal in it. So it was anticlimactic. I always remember the battles I one.

In LIFE,I dont remember any stuff being yelled at the girl's side.It was so nausiating just to have to listen to them speak,nobody even wanted to look over there,but I was in there when it opened,so I dont know what happened after I departed.

alot...but I was new to straight and was really more staring at them thinking " they look really fucked up" what with the sweats and ponytails and greasy skin..
No offense..we all looked like shit in straight, wasnt our fault..
But I think I was just "taking it all in" looking around ..
