ahh, memories. after 7 years i finally decided to try and contact people and friends from samoa, and typed whatever i could remember into a search engine. i found out that corey murphy (went through discovery, focus with him) was dead, and chris sutton is in jail. but i have conflicted feelings about my 2.5 year stay in the program, and im really curious as to how the majority of people are doing today. of course some people are dead, and others are poster children for the program, but what about the bulk of us? i realize that a lot of what happened in samoa could be called abuse or neglect, but i think i am a better person now because of what i learned there. at the same time, i dont think i could ever forgive my parents, even though they had no way of knowing what it was really like. dont get me wrong, i get along with my parents, but ill never forget. for myself, i decided that, overall, im GLAD I WENT, and i feel what i learned gives me a 1up, over teens who lived a "normal" life. so what i would like to see someday is a followup report. what percentage of people say the program haunts them? what percentage says helped?
some memories from samoa:
-boiled chicken
-masi auro
-cocoa-rice
-limbo
-iso
-"skills" (military style workouts)
-le tiara sucked
-fagatele was awesome!
-bathing in the river (le tiara)
-the white thing on sinalele island
-overflowing toilets
-moldy clothes
-cat 4 for masturbation cat 3 for drug possession
-cleaning the beach for 3 days straight before any outsiders would visit.
-"supply boy"
ahh, memories.

I'm just curious who was in charge of this program in Samoa? When I was at Cross Cross Creek back in 1989, there were these houseparents by the name of Brian and Angie Vifanua (I'm not sure if I spelled the last name correctly) anyway, Bob Lichfield had talked to them about doing that. When was the first year this program opened?

Paradise Cove opened in 1994. The director was Brian Viafanua. After PC closed, he went to work at Cross Creek. He is now the director of Midwest Academy, in Iowa.

Oh my god, that's scary. Are him, and Angie together still? Did you know that Brian played football for the Minnesota Vikings? When I dropped from the top floor of the Cross Creek Manor, I dropped in front of a meeting room where Brian was. He was one of the many that chased me into the night. He was soooo slow, being out run by a 16 year old girl?!! Pathetic! No wonder why he didn't have a career cut out for him in football.

Agreed.

I have no idea.
I remember reading in one of the Paradise Cove newsletters that they had a kid, so, they were still together in 1997.

So instead he turned to a career in torturing kids. :scared:

Cat 4 for masturbation, and Cat 3 for drug possession!? That's hilarious! I doubt anyone's parents sent them there for excessive masturbation, but it's worse than drug possession there!
-
Well, money changes everything. Greed is an ugly disease. WWASPS is plagued with disease.
-
wow i never knew what brian did before samoa. i wonder what happened to duane lee? people in samoa im sure know him but anyone from another program remember him? he was another big guy in samoa, not sure what his position was exactly.

yea well i always thought that was stupid. i just think it goes to show you how much their mormom morals got put into the program.

So Bola, why did you get sent to Paradise Cove and were you taken by escort?

my story was a little different. i was arrested and when my parents got me, they took me straight to a "brightway-like" hospital near chicago. they made all the plans and lead me to the gate at o'hare, watched me get on a plane, and go to lax. i was going a day no other kids were going, but big wigs were going down that flight, so i met brent facer at lax! we flew to honolulu and picked up david gilcrease. i flew from honolulu to pago-pago with david gilcrease and brent facer, and then stayed with lafi till the next day. no kidnapping, and im glad. i flew in normal clothes, and david and brent were nice.
-
What year was this and how long were you there?
-
i was there from 4-6-96 to 4-20-98.

Your parents left you in Samoa for two years?
Jesus, that is really pitiful. How in the hell did they afford it or did they "refer" other kids and get a free month's free tuition for every kid they sent to a Teen Help/WWASPS program?
BTW: Did you know Joe M. from Washington State? He sure didn't have anything good to say about that place.
-
they took out a loan. they are still convinced it "saved my life". joe m. from washington? hmm... maybe you know the last name?
-
Well, most parents believe that ... what else are they supposed to believe, especially if they bought into the TASKS seminars which so many parents did only to find out it was a bunch of new-age crappola.
-
<<< flew in normal clothes, and david and brent were nice. >>>
David Gilcrease was actually nice to you?!?!?

brent facer came onto their scene around 1990 CCM

I actually thought he was a nice guy. I remember him clear back in 1990 when he drove this frosty beige Ford Tempo. When I was going through all the B.S. with Bob Lichfield, he lent a sympathetic ear. But, now that I see him playing such a major role in all of this! I think totally different of him. I wonder what he's rolling around in now, I bet it's not a Ford!
-
david gilcrease was of course going to act different in the seminar. just like a cop or an actor, he has a job where he has to play a role. in day to day life, im sure he's different.

I think he means Joe Medoro. That guy was miserable there. He resisted the program for long time.

Duane Lee was incharge of that "high impact" boot camp in mexico. It was based off of the limbo program. It was shut down when Mexican Police raided it after they videotaped children being locked in dog kennels.

i was in samoa for over 2 years, and i saw duane lee smile once! only once.
