I know I'm a dork, but that's one of my favorite movies.

A place where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu

And now
Open your eyes and see
What we have made is real
We are in Xanadu

A million lights are dancing
And there you are
A shooting star
An everlasting world
And you're here with me
Eternally

Xanadu, Xanadu,
(now we are here)
In Xanadu
Xanadu, Xanadu,
(now we are here)
In Xanadu

Xanadu, your neon lights will shine
For you, Xanadu

The love
The echoes of long ago
You needed the world to know
They are in Xanadu

The dream
That came through a million years
That lived on through all the tears
It came to Xanadu

A million lights are dancing
And there you are
A shooting star
An everlasting world
And you're here with me
Eternally

Xanadu, Xanadu,
(now we are here)
In Xanadu
Xanadu, Xanadu,
(now we are here)
In Xanadu

Now that I'm here
Now that you're near in Xanadu
Now that I'm here
Now that you're near in Xanadu
Xanadu...

I qualify for ultra dorkiness.  This is my favorite movie and soundtrack of ALL TIME.

I used to haul my boombox out to the tennis court and skate to it for hours on end.

Long live leg warmers and rollerskates!

"KUBLA KHAN" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

So twice 5 miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh!  That deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedern cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething.
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
5 miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once i saw:
It was an Abssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.

Could i revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Did ya know that he never finished the poem because he was interrupted by a life insurance salesman, and he wasn't able to get back into the train of thought after the interruption killed his buzz?  It's true, I've heard.....

p.s. didn't that guy in the movie have to roller skate like full speed at the wall to get to her world?

Anyone remember those sandal skates where the wheels popped out? I begged for those in 2nd grade and was so disapointed when I could hardly skate with those little wheels. The commerical made them look so fast and fun.

Yeah I had some white one's with purple wheels and pom poms. I can't remember what the name of those wheels were. I used to go to the skate rink in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. All the kiddies would make out on couples skates to Journey songs.

I was completely into roller skating in the 70's and early 80's and was pretty good at it...but I couldn't quite master skating backwards for some reason! I had the white leather skates anon was talking about. And yes, I remember the couple skates. I just had to hear some Journey after reading this!  ::rainbow::

They still play it at the roller rink too. That's my next escapade after ice skating last weekend. I'm going ice skating again tomorrow. I just wish they'd not play country music at the ice rink. How about some Rick James like at the roller rink.

One of the many percs at SIBS (aside from the gorilla cage) is a full-sized skating rink for the upper phasers to utilize if they would rather not leave the compound on their days off.. No Journey songs though -- just straight songs (recorded during raps) and selected songs like "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver, and the like.

Oh, and 4th phase girls have to skate naked!

Duran Duran has some new stuff out. I was waaay into them in 6th grade. I beggged and pleaded to go to a Duran Duran concert when I was 12. I was told "no there's too many bad things at concerts". As if Duran Duran were Satan's spawn or something. So at 14 I finally got to go to a concert and it was Iron Maiden. Had a half pint of Southern Comfort down my pants and weed in my bra. So you were allowed to go to Iron Maiden but not Duran Duran...hmmmm what were they thinking? I went to Rick Springfield in 81...those kinds of shows (including Duran Duran I'm sure) were mostly screaming crying girls...tame by comparison to an 80's metal show.

Speculations on the Origin of Human Intelligence: "In defense of the Pygmies, perhaps I should note that a friend of mine who has spent time with them says that for such activities as the patient stalking and hunting of mammals and fish they prepare themselves through marijuana intoxication, which helps to make the long waits, boring to anyone further evolved than a Komodo dragon, at least moderately tolerable. Ganja is, he says, their only cultivated crop. It would be wryly interesting if in human history the cultivation  of marijuana led generally to the invention of agriculture, and thereby to civilization.

gotta get back to the roller skates. When I was about eight or nine, I was nuts about skating, I grew up in Scotland and we didn't have much in the way of roller rinks, so I skated everywhere, school, the corner store, friends houses, anywhere I had to go I was doing it on my wheels. They were my first choice in transportation. I had these really cheesy blue boot ones that had these bright stripes of yellow, white and red. I was totally embarrassed by the style but I was spun, so I wore them everyday anyway. I got my new shoes every year at the start of school term and my Mom picked me out these really awful shoes. Any chance I had I would get out of the dreadful shoes and into my skates. I used to hide my shoes in a bush near the school and one day I got back there on my way home, and the shoes were gone. My world was shattered I knew that when I told my Mom what I had been doing that she would take away my skates! I hit rock bottom. Looking back I just can't believe the things I would do just to get my fix, that speed on the wheels! My past was a misery of addiction, I couldn't get through even a short walk home from school with out using (my skates)In retrospect I should never have been allowed to run as it is just a gateway activity, from there it's just a short way to skating and then it's either recovery or death. I have managed to survive through these many years with out my skates by working my program and living one day at a time. If it hadn't been for the steps and the guiding hand of Straight I would surely be dead now.
