We got some peeps down in Hurricane Lane, folks. We got our mics hooked up, and we're ready to take calls from our affiliate reporters down in the dirty south. Okay, we are ready for your calls.
-
Okay, transmission is down to the hurricane area. We have a caller on the line from another part of the country, however. Go ahead, you're on the air.
-
Yeah...umm... what's up with the patriot act and all the secret prisons that FEMA is building ??
-
That is an interesting question, in light of the reports we've been hearing that FEMA will be heavily involved in the New Orleans clean-up. It will be interesting to watch how they deal with the massive numbers of displaced and homeless people. Keep your eyes and ears open, folks. Anyone with frontline reports on the actions of FEMA or other government agencies, we hope you will call and keep us all informed.
-
Meantime, I have a question here from a caller. The question is, is Katrina related to global warming. Well folks, we'll be talking to an environmental expert later on. Stay tuned. We hope everyone's loved ones are safe and sound.
-
...Hello... Hello...can you here me ?? is anyone there ?? (speaking away from the phone)i don't think anyones' there....
-
Hello? Caller, are you there?
-
HOw long until the blacks start rioting in full force?
-
Okay, the caller is asking about rioting. So we have the news reports on looting, which doesn't constitute rioting. But, I know we have all heard that thieves will be treated, and i quote, "ruthlessly". Who said that? I'll get back to you. Caller, I'm sure many are curious about the origins of your concern. Are there expectations of rioting?
-
THey talk about a detiorating situation in the superdome, tens of thousands of people losing patience. Story earlier about a suicide inside the dome; jumper from a higher level. 3 shootings outside the dome. What it will be like tomorrow? Can they bring in enough food and water, or will we see urban anarchy for the first time in a major american city? THe mayor of new orlenas has yet to say anything near 'rutheless' like the leo's in mississippi. Maybe its because hes black himself.
You got to think the flooding has stopped the looting in orleans at least, where did those people take the items they stole anyways.. didnt their houses flood by the end of the day today/?
-
Also, aparently the prison strarted flooding so they took the priosners out into the open under armed watch. now they are rioting and took some guards family and him hostage. he has 4 kids. where will they take all the prisoners?

Good morning, listeners. We are picking up this morning where we left off last night, we're talking about what is now being called the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States, that fictitious entity that lives in the collective mind, if you will, that is, this certainly isn't the worst natural disaster to hit the continent, referring, of course, to the Yucatan meteor impact. We're a tiny rock in space, folks.
Okay, we left off last night with a caller who was concerned about the possibility of rioting. And, thank for your comments, caller, you raise some interesting questions. I'd like to suggest something here: folks are having a hard time, they've lost their homes, that fundamental tool of comfort and survival we so often take for granted. What do you think would improve the mood? How about some music in the Superdome, some ice cream for the children? There's more to survival than bottled water. Let's hear some ideas.
An astute listener called in during the break to remind me that was Haley Barbour, Governor of Mississippi, who ordered police and Nat'l Guard to be "ruthless" with looters. Hey, be careful out there. Nobody loses their head, nobody loses their head. Let's not hype this up too much, we are all saddened by the photos and videos that are coming in, we have greatest sympathy for the folks who lost their lives, people who lost loved ones, and the many thousands of people who are facing months of homelessness. However, I don't know about you, but a quote-unquote "ruthless" police force scares me. Stealing is stealing, folks. It's wrong, but let's not start chopping off hands, or shooting anyone on sight who happens to be walking down the street carrying a television. That would be un-American. Due process, folks, due process.
The phone lines are re-opened, give us a call, what do you know, what do you think.
-
Wondering: any of these "treatment facility schools" in Mississippi in the path of Hurricane Katrina?
-
Good thing it was a storm and not a crackpot president that caused this.
It's strange how when it's our people we care and when its Iraq we don't as a nation give a shit about the thousands of homeless dead wounded mothers, fathers, children.
You got to wonder if those thousands and thousands in Iraq who were made homeless by our tax dollar military are thanking Allah for justice.
Maybe we'll have a little more damn sympathy for the innocent bystanders when we decide to send, with our tax dollars, bombers over the next muslim country. And the thousands of orphans with bloody parents will suddenly be real to us.
Katrina help us wake up!
-
Right on!
-
Considering the state of affairs in Mississippi before the huricane (meaning high rates of poverty and institutionalized racism) I'm understanding why many are taking advantage of an opportunity for civil disobediance. Maybe this will wake people up that things need to change for the better. Sometimes extreme measures are necessary to fight for one's rights.
-
Right on! again.

Since when is a buncha niggers looting business's considered civil disobedience?!?!

Apparently you do not fully understand institutionalized racism or oppression on a large scale.

In light of the unfoldin' sufferin' bein' endured down in N'Orle'n my heart goes out to all the people. They are all my brothers 'n' sisters. God bless the rescuers. Let love and compassion be our light.

Ok, here's the funny part. Yesterday, I was stuck all day in a hospital. So I saw the same news reels over and over. Don't worry, everyone's ok. Just had to give someone a ride home after a dx proceedure and, well, liability concerns dictate making the pt hang around a few extra hours.
Anyway, two interviews stuck out in my mind. First was a black guy who's wife was lost in the flooding. I got exactly the same gut feeling listening to him that I did listening to that woman from SC who drowned her kids. I just came away thinking "OMG, that dude killed his wife and just damned near confessed to it on national TV!" Then, about the 3rd time through, I spoted something fairly concrete. When the reporter asked him where his wife was, he said "Oh, they'll never find her body, she's gone." I wonder how that will turn out.
The other one that had me LOL was a white guy in Mississippi. Reporter asked him why he wasn't evacuating. He started talking about the looting and stuff that usually goes on after a big storm. As he was describing the scene, he was smiling more and more and finished with a grin saying "I want to be around for that!" No shit! He said it outright! I wanna hang around for the looting!
But I don't really think the uncivil or dissobedient poor people on the Gulf are trying to make a political point so much as they're just trying to survive and/or possibly take advantage of providence to score some valuable swag if they can.
Of course we don't care as much about ppl in Iraq as we do about ppl in NOLA. We've never been to Iraq, can't even understand the language in their newspapers, we know those ppl have been fighting for keeps for centuries and, frankly, they're not us. To my mind, all that together means that we should mind our own damned business and stay the hell out of theirs.
But I think that most Americans simply can't fathom (on commerical breaks.... those that are not really entertaining productions, anyway) how our taxes and our apathy has contributed to the current troubled circumstances in the region. And any attempt to discuss the issue with a mind toward turning off the damned hydrant before (or in addition to) bailing is seen as anti-American. As a rule, most people just don't think globally or historically. Those who do wind up fat and happy from it and so wouldn't want to change things.
It's a vicious cycle. The optimist thinks that this is the best of all possible worlds, and the pessimist knows it.

You are, of course entitled to your opinion Ant. but i have to disagree with you here. Those people in Iraq are "us". We are all brothers and sisters in the same human family. Our languages, customs, and ways of life may differ but we are all essentially taking part in the same struggle. The differences between us are only conditional. We all mourn our dead. We all suffer in ignorance. We all want to be loved.
Your comment is indicative of a de-humanizin' mentality which only serves oppression.
This is not a personal attack on you, i am only expressin' my opinion.

Antigen: I had the exact same thought: "Dang, that man killed his poor wife!!" My husband just stared at my jaded butt as if I was crazy or something....but, that WAS my first thought.
Think we might be seeing more of him...his name was "HARVEY," just like we did Miss Susan Smith after she drown those babies of hers.

Oh, de nada my good friend! I didn't take it personally at all. In fact, I agree w/ you in theory. Logically, I know we're all made out of the same stuff and equally valuable. In practice, though, we don't know Iraqis. Our histories and social norms, though intertwined, are divergent. We can't relate very well to what they do and think and what motivates them.
And it IS important! There's a reason why, going all the way back to the days of John Locke, we insist on a jury of our peers for criminal trials; because only people who share our own views and priorities are fit to judge our acts in the context of the circumstance. In one part of America, it may alright to put down a sick dog, so long as you own it, and bury it in your back yard. In another, a random dozen of your neighbors might condemn such an act, unless a vet did the deed for you.
So we can't understand people who live on the other side of the planet well enough to judge them, let alone to sort out their problems for them. I think it takes great umbrage to even think that li'll ol'e America is going to take charge and babysit the civilizations of the East.
The ppl of the Gulf Coast, otoh, are not just our brothers and sisters in the sense that all of mankind or all of life are. They're really our direct responsibility. No one else in the world is better able than us to take care of their immediate corporal needs as well as the need for law-n-order.
Think of Harvey. What if it turns out he was already suspected by the ppl who know him and is investigated for his wife's dissapearance? Should he be tried by Texans or by mulahs from Afghanistan? That's what I mean when I say they're not us. It follows naturally that we're also not them.Lighthouses are more helpful then churches.

Excuse me, "fighting for one's rights" does not include STEALING from a store; and STEALING wide screen TVS at that!!! Give me a fucking break!
-
cool, Ant.
-
Shot the looters on sight.
Food you pass, 10 play stations, you die!
-
Really? Why? I mean, what do you think will happen to all those goodies if the looters leave it lay? The owners would declare it a total loss and collect the insurance. Then they'd take bids from scrappers and wholesalers. So, if some guy takes 10 play stations away on his back, he ought to be shot. WTF do you do to someone who takes tens of thousands using a pen?

No, I said fighting for survival. And I meant on a day to day basis, not just since this past weekend. What would you do, really? If you were dirt poor and there's all this stuff laying around. You know somebody's gonna turn over whatever is worth bending down to pick up. And odds are slim to none that it'll be the rightful owner. You're telling me you'd just walk right past it and report to the welfare office?

No one should be shooting ANYBODY...and that includes the policemen who have the JOB of trying to keep some kind of order in this mess.
But these LOOTERS did not just "walk by" and see Wide Screen TVS, expensive Tennis Shoes, PLAY STATIONS etc...just laying about--they busted into stores and STOLE THEM!
NO ONE BLAMES anybody for taking food, water, diapers etc....but blantantly stealing stuff they don't need is OUTRIGHT STEALING.

I'd loot a pharmacy and within a week I'd have all the wide-screen TVs and Playstations I wanted.

I am puking sick tonight. One of those wretched headaches and poisoned-feeling sicknesses, when every thought is another worry and puking actually makes me feel better. It is my own life I am sick about, and also I am sick with concern about what is happening down south. I've been homeless before, and I was thinking "what if I was homeless right now, feeling like this?" What if I didn't have bottled water to drink to get better. What if I had no facilities, or if I was living out of my car at a rest stop or on some dark street? I might just die. I might just lie there and be sick.
I have not been watching the television. I asked a cashier tonight if she had been watching the news on New Orleans, and she told me about people dying who had crawled up into their attics to escape the rising flood and drowned. Another cashier told me about dogs on rooftops, barking for someone to rescue them, but no one can, they are turning away the animal rescue groups, I presume for logistical and safety reasons. Check out http://http://www.noahswish.com/
There are different ways to be homeless. Myself I always had a car to sleep in. It is why I now have a mini-van, and might always have a car big enough to stretch out in. I am wondering about tent camps, like old time travellers had, big canvas tents a person could really live in. That was one thing about being homeless, the whole lack of privacy and the complications of the basic details like food storage, showering, and finding facilities. Then there was the deprivation, a person can't cook, can't listen to music except at the expense of the car radio, or batteries I guess. Making a telephone call becomes an errand that can take an hour, and the telephone is vital to connecting with the resources that can get a person into housing and a job or connect with relatives and friends.
I would like to envision as little deprivation as possible. I am thinking about tent camps, and how to make them really livable and not miserable deprivation. Camping can be fun because you can read by flashlight, you can make jokes and ghost stories, there is firelight and candlelight and the sounds of locusts and crickets. Music is really important, I wish there could be musicians in the camps, that really can heal a tired spirit.
There are also ingenious things out there like composting toilets, bicycle-powered washing machines, and lest anyone forget, solar power! Check out http://http://www.realgoods.com/. Many needs and comforts can be met.

News reporting that entire gun dept. at Walmart looted.
Shots fired at helicopters from Superdome.
WTF?
This ain't excusable. No reason to shoot at the folks trying to help. None at all.
-
Also, heard that a truck loaded with supplies for patients at a hospital was held up at gun point.
Fucking stupid!
-
Looting electronics seems a bit pointless since they aren't gonna have power for months. Not to mention most of their homes are under many feet of water. What's more where?s the real harm? Every store owner will be protected by their insurance (required ins.) Also the business owners having had the means are long gone from there, they wont be back for quite a while. There are possibly thousands dead, and there are close to 500,000 people homeless, nobody should be worrying about their god damn profit margin. The tent city idea is unfortunately very likely to happen. I think it would be a great good idea for those who will be forced to live like that to get any tools that will make their lives easier. Camping in the south coastal areas can be hellish at this time of year. Disease will run rampant in a section of the population that can least withstand it. NOLA has some of the poorest populations in the nation. I spent many years living in 9th ward hell there. Many of these people have never been out of the city before. Parts of N.O. barely resemble the America that most people know. It's going to make everything much more difficult. Some of these people have spent their whole lives struggling to barely get by, and now what little thay had worked for is gone. I think tempers will be high. We will be very lucky if all the violence is restricted to a little theft. Hell there are armed marauding gangs in NOLA at the best of times. Having said all that if there is anybody out there who has just escaped please let me know if there is anything that I can do to lend a hand.

Perhaps there is no more food, water, and diapers to steal so the next best option is to steal big ticket items. A person can steal TVs and such and travel out of the area to sell it to get money to go to a hotel out of town or buy food and water out of town.
My coworker just told me that hotels in FLA are going for $199 a night. What about the buisness owners taking advantage of people suffering by ripping them off? How about those $5 gas prices down in ATL? If someone has no money to get the hell out of that place what do you suggest they do?
When Michigan had a blackout 2 years ago I was not prepared with enough food and water. By the time I left work the gas staions were out of gas and there was no liquid anything to buy at the stores. We could not drink our water and I spent a big part of my night driving around looking for at least some juice to purchase.

are you aware that NOLA is surrounded by water! Anybody who had a way to get out left. There are very few ways left to get out of the city. The 27 mile bridge is in pieces as are most of the other highways. New Orleans is basically an island. People are being bussed out on secure routes or helicoptered out. They are not stacking up electronics where there could be passage for people. 'Hm... you know I could get my mother , kids, and wife out, but on thinking about it I'll just go and loot myself a couple of t.v.'s and take those instead. You know maybe once I get out of the area I'll get some cash for them. Hell, if I take enough of them maybe I could spend the night at the Ritz-Carlton when I get to Houston.' Anybody who is looting is doing it because they think that they'll just wait it out. This is not a little black out, it is not going to be okay in a few days. Many of these people have seen their friends and families die while they could do nothing about it. And yes it is the poor and disaffected who are going to be the most devastated by this. Anybody with any money secured a way out long before the storm hit. Lawlessness is to be expected and why not. Fuck those peoples T.V.'s. They will be pulling dead friends and family out of the swamp and rubble for months to come. Again who cares if t.v.'s are stolen. The worry of lost money pales in comparison to the real loss of life.

Yes, I am aware of the seriousness of the situation and yes people are still getting out of the area. I had a call at work yesterday and several families from Mississippi are on their way to Michigan with nothing but the clothes on their backs and they are seeking shelter and help up here. If they want to grab some TVs on the way to later get cash for them well more power to them.
Also it makes sense for people that are waiting it out to be stealing things. Why should they have to be broke with no resources when the water is gone?

Some years ago, I took my kids on a tour of the GoodYear blimp hanger in Pompano. They guy giving the presentation mentioned that, every time they overflew the Orange Bowl (now JR Stadium, I think) in Overtown, they got shot at. Fortunately, a few little bullet holes won't take down a blimp. But he pointed out a couple of visible patches. Those were the lucky shots. Usually those crack heads miss entirely.
Evidently, even under normal circumstances, people who live in desperate poverty will take a pot shot or two at any target that presents.
I'm really surprised at all the outrage and condemnation. It's asif eveybody expects (takes for granted?) that a crisis will melt away all the usual human flaws and frailties and bring out the best in every one. Not so, folks! Yeah, it's nice when the lights go out for a few hours to have a chance to shoot the shit w/ neighbors who normally never bother to stop and talk. I actually miss those regular outages we used to enjoy in Florida for just that reason. But you can't really count on everybody becoming saintly just because the shit hit the fan. In fact, I would imagine there's a good deal of grudge settling going on along w/ the looting and such.

Hey Antigen....You mentioned living in Florida and the Goodyear blimp hanger in Pompano, ( which I drive by at least 2-3 times a week ). Are you still in Florida???Ministers say that they teach charity. That is natural. They live on hand-outs. All beggars teach that others should give.

No, we moved to SW Pa about 3 years ago. I used to love that little stretch of unincorporated I-95, though. When I was a kid, it was the unoffically designated drag racing spot. Now it's the favorite blunt ride. Still a nice stretch of road, though. Are those bent trees still there? I can't remember the name of the storm that bent them. But those were always an interesting feature.

WTF!! People are fuckin' dyin'in the streets 'cause they don't have water!! It's been 2 full days since the storm cleared the area. It's fuckin' inhumane that the damn government can't find at least some helicopters to start droppin' some water to these poor sufferin' people. WTF!! I have to question whether this would even be happenin' if the people who were down in the flood were middle classed white folks, pro'ly not. i think this is jus' more fucked up ugly racism. Once again Bush has shown his incompetence. This whole situation down in N'Orle'n is extremely disturbin'. i'm disgusted by the callousness of the government. Fuckin' pathetic, especially since this kind of doomsday hurricane, direct hit on N'Orle'n, scenario has been talked about for years. God help us all.

And I bet they don't give away nearly as much FEMA money as they did in FL last year----it was an election year, and W bought a lot of votes that way. I nearly puked when this one white trash woman was screaming "God bless George Bush!" after she got her check. Her trailer was barely damaged, and wasn't worth $2k to begin with, she got $20K. After the election, a lot of the federal aid $$ dried up. Coincidence?

RIOT
Rioting, the unbeatable high. Adrenaline shoots your nerves to the sky. Everyone knows this town is gonna blow and it?s all gonna blow right now! Now you can smash all the windows that you want. All you really need are some friends and a rock. Throwing a brick never felt so damn good. Smash more glass, scream with a laugh and wallow with the crowds watch them kicking people?s ass. But you get to the place where the real slavedrivers live, it?s walled off by the riot squad aiming guns right at your heads. So you turn right around and play right into their hands and set your own neighborhood burning to the ground instead. Riot - the unbeatable high. Riot - shoots your nerves to the sky. Riot - playing into their hands. Tomorrow you?re homeless, Tonight it?s a blast. Get your kicks in quick. They?re callin? the national guard. Now could be your only chance to torch a police car. Climb the roof, kick the siren in and jump and yelp for joy. Quickly - dive back in the crowd slip away now don?t get caught. Let?s loot the spiffy Hi-Fi store, grab as much as you can hold. Pray your full arms don?t fall off, here comes the owner with a gun. The barricades spring up from nowhere. Cops in helmets line the lines. Shotguns prod into your bellies. The trigger fingers want an excuse. Now, The raging mob has lost its nerve. There?s more of us but who goes first. No one dares to cross the lines the cops know that they?ve won. It?s all over but not quite the pigs have just begun to fight. They club your heads, kick your teeth. Police can riot all that they please. Tomorrow you?re homeless. Tonight it?s a blast.

Are any of you actually from NOLA?
Did any of you evacuate?
Do any of you know people still in NOLA?
Have any of you lost everything you own in NOLA?
If not, what do you know?
I evacuated. Might have lost the house. My neighbors stayed. My friends and loved ones have lost all they own. I am alive. I was in NY 911. I am in NOLA for Katrina. The reality on the ground is:
Copters evacuating people being shot at.
Snipers shooting at Charity hospital as they try to evacuate. People with knives trying to steal boats from those trying to rescue them. People fleeing not the storm, but the looting, the danger created by their very own neighbors. Bush and Rumsfeld sent our rescue equipment to Iraq long ago. People are paddling through floating bodies. Coffins are breaking out of the ground. Police officers in uniform are looting the Walmart. Five days later and no food drops have been made. Our national guard is in Iraq. The people who are starving are not stealing big screen TVs. This should say more about education in New Orleans than anything. Perhaps these idiots don't realize they might need electricity. That the only way the t.v. will get out is by carrying it on foot. And who in mississippi or the gulf coast is going to buy that shit. We've all been hit. So don't give me this shit about how the looting is "survival". Don't give me this shit that the violence is desperation. Shut up all of you who think it's justified. These are people who are deterring all efforts to rescue those at the Super Dome, at the Convention Center. . . those dying in their homes. These are people who are killing the very people who have stayed to keep patients alive in our hospitals.
What are you idiots? This isn't about getting out. It is about thugs and lunatics trying to prevent rescue and insure that more people die a horrible death.

Fuck...i have no words. i am humble

Hey, I don't condone any of it, at least not the senseless violence and such. Just noting that this is how people behave and that I'm a little surprised at all the surprise over it.
May your days be joyously challenging and your words artfully true.

Looters are not looking to survive; they're looking to take advantage of the weakness of others. They are predators. They're taking not what they need but what they want. They are breaking into stores in New Orleans and elsewhere and stealing flat screen TVs and jewelry, guns and CD players. They are breaking into homes and taking what those who have fled trustingly left behind. In Biloxi, Miss., looters went from shop to shop. "People are just casually walking in and filling up garbage bags and walking off like they're Santa Claus," the owner of a Super 8 Motel told the London Times. On CNN, producer Kim Siegel reported in the middle of the afternoon from Canal Street in New Orleans that looters were taking "everything they can."
-
Nothing is better than a DEAD predator! At least they would be out of the picture. They don't deserve to live! If I was there and was armed and someone broke into my store to steal my non food item stuff they would be met with supreme force. I would not hesitate at all to protect myself and law abiding citzens.

And the gas stations charging $5 a gallon and hotels charging $199 a night are not predators?

Well I guess the gas stations and hotels preying on people should take caution then I gather.

No they should have charges filed against them from the state, and I think you may see that after this settles down. It should.
You handle a looter with a pen like Ginger said in court. You handle a looter with a crow bar and a gun with a well placed shot. You have a duty to protect the law abiding people remember. And if I owned a food store then of course they can have it. If I was there I would hand it out myself.

It's like we are witnessing a mini-Iraq right now. Same story... same mistakes. You have got to feel for those poor people and tourists stuck in that mess. I'm reading stories or rapes, murders, gangs robbing everyone in sight. I've visited nawlins this time of year, and the weather is unbearable. I can't imagine the living hell they are going through right now.
-
I can't believe they have not airdropped thousands of pounds of food and water for the people. It unreal how we can make it into Iraq ok but we can't get food and water to those people because of 6 feet of water and a few nuts with guns!1
What the heck is going on there.

Anon', sorry to hear that you've lost your house if there?s anything that you need let me know. Do you have all the clothes, food, any other basics that you need? I'm in TX if that's any help. I have a surplus of stuff! I've lived in NOLA most of my life. Most of my friends are still missing. I was certainly not condoning the rampant senseless violence. But, are you really shocked or even surprised? NOLA is a fucked up violent town to begin with. What I was saying is that the general public seems to be focused on the looting rather than on what the fuck can be done to help. The media instead of pressuring the admin. to get it's ass into gear are droning on and on about the looting. It is going to take a lot more than the charity of the American people to get NOLA back on track. What's more this is the kind of thing that we pay taxes for. After 9/11 there was a call out to all medical, police, search and rescue, and fire workers, they were asked to come quickly to NY to aid in the rescue and clean up. There was looting then also but that was rarely mentioned and it stopped quickly, partially because of the immediate response from the rest of the country. Why haven?t there been governmental requests for aid workers? Indeed as the anon poster mentioned there haven?t even been supply drops. The media?s preoccupation with the craziness is fostering an us and them feeling. Most people who are watching from the safety of their living rooms are thinking how horrific these looters are. Who needs to help these types of people. It is going to make the recovery from this devastation just that much harder. I get the feeling that this would be handled very differently had it been Cape Cod that was under water. Who in the government is really all that worried about losing 9th ward, the St. Thomas projects or even uptown? How can there be any shock at the anarchy in the streets when the government is having so little involvement? That does not mean that I think that it?s a good thing, or that I wouldn?t want it to stop. I am simply not surprised.

All I can think about is "How can I help these people stranded in NO? I saw the pictures of people who have started walking and thought..."I wish I could just drive to NO myself and start giving people rides that are walking".... I cant stand that so many people are just waiting for help that doesn't come....
Our govt is so busy gathered around tables drawing up plans....what the Fuck? The people of NO cannot wait for govt. officials to make the perfect plan! They're hungry, tired, hot, some are sick and/or dying and need out NOW, and are in such desperate straights even I cannot fathom.
I think Pesident Bush, on this morning's interview w/Diane Sawyer....really indicates what a moran our President is being right now...When asked about the looters...including those who are just desperately trying to get food and necessities for basic survival...our illustrious president responded to the effect...ZERO TOLERANCE....LOOTERS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED...HELP IS ON THE WAY....Granted, I dont condone stealing luxury items such as TV's, cars, etc....but
I couldn't believe my ears....what are they supposed to do starve while patiently waitng for help that may come too late???? But I guess I wasn't surprised at the inhumaity and lack of compassion our president is showing to those in the most desperate circumstances........of course all the while stating that he understands...which is total Bullshit....

NCL, that's what I'm talking about! I caught a little bit of coverage today. First off, they (FEMA, various states, American Red Cross and everyone else who can) are dropping in food, water and all the rest. But there is no way to get it moved around and no one to keep it honest.
I can't imagine that what's going on on the ground is all that different from what happened in Miami/Homestead after Andrew. Granted, it wasn't quite so devistating. Everybody knew it would be cleaned up and rebuilt fairly routinely. But, for a number of days, there was no communication, no money, no cops, no firemen, no hospitals no driving. All hell did break loose.
The local media responded by interviewing people who were ready to shoot to protect home and family and then featuring those interviews at least hourly. They never played it asif looting and lawlessness were the primary concern. They reported on the Mikasukee(sp?) brought boats, food, water and building materials to the Seminols. They implored people to send money, food, water, but to do it through the authorities. Some people ignored that and went in anyway if they could.
I know they understated resulting deaths. I knew a doctor who went down there to help. I worked for his answering service. He told us about refrigerated tractor trailers loaded w/ bodies waiting for autopsy and he had done hundreds in a couple of days already. Then there were the hospitals that didn't get power restored or critical patients evacuated before their backup generators ran out of fuel.
They're playing it differently this time around. Why would they do that? Then, in the next breath, you mention 9/11. I don't even want to think they'll spin this for increased political power as they did the last major shakeup. But then, wtf is w/ Chavez's offers to send aid, oil and eye surgery???? Then consider that it is only about a 20 min trip to the lands of narcoterror by puddle hopper. I'm thinkin' they may do just that.
Then what, Pooh?Who would believe that a democratic government would pursue for eight decades a failed policy that produced tens of millions of victims and trillions of dollars of illicit profits for drug dealers, cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars, increased crime and destroyed inner cities, fostered widespread corruption and violations of human rights - and all with no success in achieving the stated and unattainable objective of a drug free America?

no. i'm not surprised about the looting. where did all the prisoners on I-10 go. Did they loose them? I read an article this morning from Texas officials who feared they had accidentally mixed some in with the refugees headed for Houston. Ooops.
I heard the pump they recently built just behind our house was never turned on. I know that despite warnings and knowledge that this could occur, sent our rescue equipment to Iraq, refused to fund flood control programs and failed us horribly.
I was also living in New York during 911. This is so much worse. But in NY looting was stopped. Before looting turned to mayhem, rape and murder, it was stopped. Within a day there was a military presence. Cops did not flee town. They did not jump ship. There were tanks in my neighborhood, at the Brooklyn Bridge. They didn't stop survivors from walking across bridges to escape the disaster. People in New Orleans were told the bridge was not safe for pedestrians. There are people who haven't eaten in 5 days. They are prevented from leaving. My neighbors stayed? Are they alive? Cops in NY weren't looting Walmart in their uniforms. They were saving lives. They were grieving the loss of lives. They were not turning a blind eye to crime. In NYC neighborhoods around the city were shut down and surrounded by armed military within the first few days. Where is our military? They are with our rescue equipment in Iraq.
If bringing order to Iraq is any indication of how order will be brought to New Orleans, we are in grave trouble.
When our poiticians are saying publicly that maybe we should not rebuild this city one it's pretty easy to understand just why this is happening.
Last night some fellow evacuees started trashing the poor people dying in the streets and at the Superdome and Convention Center. They started saying these people just want to be taken care of. They don't ever want to do anything for themselves. I asked him how he knew who these people were? I told him some were my neighbors.
He said he knew damn well who 90% of these people were. I finally called him a racist and told him that I couldn't listen to the bullshit he was spewing. I just screamed "people are dying". What is wrong with you!" They just didn't get it. They are so far removed from the reality of this tragedy.
I was in KIDS of BC.
I got through that, I got through 911, I'll get through this one too.
If anyone is interested in helping, I am trying to form a list of things my friends need. We are all displaced. Most of them are homeless and jobless now. They will need basic things over the coming weeks and months. One of my friends has her elderly father in tow. Another is a single mom with her 12 year old daughter. If anyone is interested in donating even $1 to these folks, a friend in Brooklyn set up a pay pal fund and will be getting me a list of what they all need. Please email me at designkorp at earthlink.net and I will give you the info. 100% will be split up between about 20 individuals. They have already received enough to buy the basics like underwear, personal hygiene needs and food. They have offered me help as well but I am fortunate. My partner and I still have our jobs for now. We have a free place to stay and enough savings to get the basics we need. For now I've declined any assistance from the fund so there will be more for the others. I feel fortunate to be alive and I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends, family and strangers.

The main point to all of this as I see it is:
1. W/poverty as it is and the lack of transport pre Katrina. The Gov. Failed their people. 911 calls were made 2 days prior to Kat. from the poor and elderly seeking refuge they wanted to leave but couldn't. The calls were desperate and the 911 operators told them in more words "TUOGH LUCK BUDY"
2. Our Gov. Dropped and reccomended the poor to go to the dome and conventin center for help. WHERE WAS IS THE HELP. Don't need an AK. Need food water medication.
3.When you are w/out food and water for days with the stress levels high and trauma and people dying by the sec. around you, Are your faculties about you? Hell no! You become a desperate animal.
4. Why are we concerned with protecting STUFF, SHIT, TVs ect. Just goes to show we care less for people than profit.
I am not angry w/the looting. I dont care about the looting I care about the 10s of thousands stranded by their country pleading for help, and we do not help.
A concert?a telethon?Pr bullshit!
More and more I become disgrunteled with the mentality of our bougoise society. What right do we have to judge these people. Yes they took a TV so What!!!! They were forced to leave them in the streets next to their dead friends mothers fathers and children. TV=GRAVE MARKER
GEORGE BUSH IS KILLING OUR CITIZENS IN EVERY TURN SENDING OUR YOUNG MEN TO WOMEN TO THEIR DEATH IN IRAQ. KILLING THE POOR IN LA, MISS AND ELSEWHERE BY LACK OF ACTION AND CARE. THAT SCUM IS SO FAR REMOVED FROM REALITY ALONG W/THE REST OF THE ADMIN. HE IS KILLING OUR CHILDREN BY HIS MANDITORY PSYCH EVALS AND MED PROGRAMS HES KILLING WOMEN BY PLACING THEM IN PRISONS FOR CRIMES THAT SHOULDNT BE CRIMES. HE CUT SS AND WELFARE HE REMOVED FUNDS FROM SCHOOLS TO PAY PRIVATE PRISON BUILDERS TO RUN OUR SCHOOLS. HE ALLOWS BIG COMPANIES TO POLLUTE OUR AIR OUR WATER. HE HAS GIVEN MONEY TO MURDERERS AND CROOKS WHO MILK THE SYSTEM AND PROFIT ALL THE WHILE SCREWING THE EMPLOYEES, AND FAMILIES. ENRON,HALIBURTON. HE SLEEPS WITH DOGS. ALL OF THEM DO
WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER!
NOW TAKE YOUR MEDS!
We ARE IN A SICK PLACE IN HISTORY, WE HAVE BECOME THE CANCER THAT EATS ITS HOST TO DEATH.

You can help by calling the Colorado Springs Police Dept. and suggest that they send their helicopters to New Orleans. Those fucking getto birds are racking my nerve. I need them out of here.
Call Micheal Moore and ask him to donate his dinner plate to the people of New Orleans. The dinner plate of that fat piece of shit will feed a dozen or so.
Buy tickets to see the NFL's newest team, the San Antonio Saints. God bless Texas.

Thank you to all who have generously offered support. As I get in touch with and learn that more and more of my friends and neighbors are safe, a list is building of those who didn't leave and those who are missing. I have been spending the past two days trying to locate them. My friend Kristin who is waiting for a check from the fund is headed back to New Orleans in a truck. She is headed to one of the locations where evacuees have been left in squalor on the highway. She has borrowed money for gas even though she has nothing. I hope she will be safe but someone has to get these people out. It's hard to just sit back and watch. It's a pretty dangerous place and there are first hand stories that I am hearing that are much more horrendous than what the news is telling us. People who have gotten out are running out of money and have nowhere to stay. I'm trying to also develop a list of needs that people have, especially for those I know who have kids. I can't even get into the politics of the whole thing or I lose focus on helping those who are not as fortunate as me and those who are missing. I'm trying to locate all the shelters / places that evacuees have been taken (aside from Houston). If anyone has any idea where they are taking people it would be very helpful. There are a lot of people missing. The fund should be up and running again next week. We're trying to sort that out. In the meantime, about a dozen people have recieved a check to buy essentials to last a few weeks, and more people are being added to the fund as we find them safe and sound. You can email me if you have any questions designkorp at earthlink.net or go to:
