OWC is a truly brainwashed, dense-as-a-black-hole, singularity of stupid, blinded by the bullshit true-blue programmie. Was programmed as a kid and now drags them into programs... I think just observing the 'interaction' between us and him would give a good idea of what programs do to people

By the way, Three Springs Waygookin.. what is a waygookin?

Me and China would mix about as well as vinegar and baking soda, TSW  thanks for the offer though!

My initial response was to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized that I had no character.

I have no resume at all, started college about 2 years ago and Im studying for a science major... not much applicable to "being a cog in a communist machine and teaching english for the peoples republic of china"

Couple of former staffers drop in on CEDU once in awhile. And there was that whistle blower, Tim something or other, who pushed a pretty impressive publicity campaign after a short stint at Thayer.

Never in the history of any nation has an education system been so on the point of disintegration and decay as the education system in this country...We know that education in this country is as bad as it can be.  We know that it is old-fashioned, irrelevant, and not meaningful.

My boyfriend is from China, and he has been in the states for about 15 years, and he swears that China is not nearly as repressive as Americans think.

For example, I read in the paper the other day that Disney stuff was banned for the last 40 years.  He says thats just not true, and he always watched Disney movies as a kid.

Shanghai is more modern than New York.  Today, they have a capitalist economy.

Anyway, communism isn't all bad.  Chinese women were liberated by communism- my BF mom went to college and is a physicist, and the government paid for her education.  Women there don't even take their husbands name when they marry.  The communists also made polygamy illegal.

My boyfriend went to school 6 days a week, as a child.  Their kids are so much better educated than US kids are.  Indian kids, too.  There's really no comparison.  At the hospital I work at, hardly any of the doctors are American.  You want your kids to have a competitive edge when they enter the workforce?  Have them learn Chinese.

Waygookin-   don't feel bad!  I also spent 6 years in college.  It's called the "extended plan".

Actually the medical system in China is not bad.  My BF is in his 3rd year of internal med. residency- last summer he did one-month rotation in Chinese hospital.

First, the whole country receives healthcare, courtesy of the gvt.  Everyone has a little card, which gets scanned, and has all their medical info on it- history, meds, ect...  Though this system was probably entatcted because of the huge population, it is far superior to anything we have here.

Oh, except we have now started electronically tagging bottles of oxycontin (I doubt China does this, or any other country)...not everyone here has healthcare, and most of our medical records are still on paper, but we are now able to electronically track narcotics.  We sure have come a long way.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't say that China is a dangerous place to live, at least not in the city (my BF says there is no danger in the city, but that we should not stray too far into the countryside alone).

There are many Americans living in and traveling through China.  You shouldn't have any trouble making friends.

+ BF says the food is so good, and you can eat out for a dollar.  Most Chinese who come to the states hate the food here.  I guess it's probably like that in Koreal also?

Bandit, what do you mean by electronically tracking narcotics?  They just scan the bottle?  Is it like a bar code?

The company who makes Oxycontin (there is only one; there is no generic form of it) have added a radiotransmitter and barcode to the wholesale bottles   They claim this is to prevent "counterfeiting".

So this way the bottles can be tracked from the manufacturing plant to the distributer to the pharmacy/dr. office/hospital, or whatever.  There are not, however, this sort of tracking devise on the bottles that YOU, the patient, receive from the pharmacy.  But don't try to jack any super-size bottles of the stuff, though.

Heres another former staffer. I worked at one of the Aspen programs - SUWS of Idaho and a little program in Minnesota called Soltreks. TSW, the lame program you worked at was Three Springs, what program did you work at before that? I read some of your posts but didnt find the name... just curious since you slam the bad one but no cudos for the good one.

So what's your experience with SUWS and Soltreks?

THis post will be short - I have to go paint a garage. Both programs had their good and bad points. Im not the most compliant person so I wasnt always a "model" employee. I guess you could say I was fired by Soltreks. I refused to do a trip ALONE with just one student. There are very valid reasons why most, if not all programs EXCEPT Soltreks requires an instructor to NEVER be alone with a student. For the safety of both student and instructor. THe student was a young man, 16, a high school wrestler that had a history of steroid use. Big frustrated kid with a learning disability and low self esteem. Short fuse. The situation was discussed at length and concluded that they would just pull me out of the field at resupply and find some inexperienced yahoo to agree to work with this kid. Not the best choice but I will also say that there are some parts of the Soltreks program that I found beneficial. They have a strong emphasis on improving communication skills for both student and parents. I believe they will also do customized trips for whole families. They believe in treating the family, not just the child. But they dont have a licensed MSW on staff and for part of the year the therapist never even sees the kids - she does everything over the phone because the kids are hiking in southern New Mexico and shes living near Dallas, Texas. They also so low that they have very high turnover. Soltreks is one the programs that takes advantage of college students having to put in internship time to get different degrees eg: outdoor rec, physical therapy etc. They pay these interns $35 for a sixteen hour workday. Criminal if you ask me. SUWS pays a living wage, runs lots LOTS of kids through their program, at least they do in the summer. Since SUWS is a pretty big program and part of a pretty big corporation I felt they were dialed in with their logistics and I knew I could get more help quick if I needed it. I never did. Never had to restrain anyone and it was rare that anyone did. Because of the size of SUWS you covered quite a range of instructor abilities and behaviors. I felt there were times that the instructors should have shown more respect for the students and other times where the instructor had no business letting themselves be walked all over. Ask questions and I will try to be objective in my answers.
