I was there in 87. The overage phasers stood out in my mind because they were treated better. Wendy who I think was getting off methadone maintenance, and a girl named Michelle or Danielle who turned out to be pregnant. It was my impression that Staff, and the group in general in terms of how people spoke to them, assumed they were telling the truth about things, whereas with underage phasers they assumed we were lying. I recall those two overage phasers when I was there, and vaguely recall, although I can't say for sure, that there might have been an underage phaser or two who stayed past their 18th birthday by choice. In that case I am thinking of a girl with dark hair named Melissa (not Melissa C. who was younger), and a medium tall girl with long straight brown hair, but I can't remember her name.
At one point in 1987 a twelve year-old girl was admitted. One girl was thirteen. I was seventeen and I recall that more phasers were younger than me than were my age or older.
When you post your recollections on this subject, please post what year(s) you were in there.

When i was in str8 from 3/15/85-2/14/87 i think the avg. age of the phasers was about 16. That's how old i was when i went in, but i didn't get out 'till i was 18 and didn't finish aftercare 'till i was 19(by the way i just want to point out that i was court-ordered by the commonwealth of VA and in no way was i there past the age of consent by my own choice). Some phasers were younger than me, some as young as 13, and some phasers were in their early 20s. i can remember a few phasers who were like 25. i hope this information helps in some way.

I went in at 15. I remember that girl who was 12...she was so tiny.
We had 2 that were 25. One guy named Tin T. I think they finally made him graduate. That was absolutely the best host home. Five miuntes from the building, great food, long showers, sleep later, ect. After that they sent me to southeast and landover.
Another guy named Paul. Nice guy, was taking a break from UVA, I guess
Yeah, overage were trusted more, for sure. Why should they lie, they WANT to be there...whatever.
I think 12 was the youngest. Had a kid in there that arrived at 14 and was still there probably until he turned 18. Andrew.

I was 19 when I went in 1/27/90, 20 when I graduated 3/91. Majority were 15/16.. a handful of 13 year olds I think. Maybe 5 or 6 over agers. I don't think I was treated differently...maybe the expectations were higher on me to progress faster. But I was a mess and ended up "full of shit" on third phase and got started over. I remembered something I had done that I was ashamed of, didn't tell anyone..and the not telling ate away at me... I don't remember the details, but after being started over, I spend the exact minimum number of days on each phase until graduation.
Upon "getting honest" I was acused of being in straight in order to receive a college scholarship... boy did I want to punch that girl in the face... She was so ... anyway.. sigh.
The benefits of being older in straight were:
I could drive
I had developed enough of my personality and idea of what common sense was that the place didn't toally destroy me mentally.

huh? yeah, so much common sense that you went on staff and participated in brainwashing children.
-
Huh? yeah, enough common sense not to make inflamatory remarks to total strangers.
enough common sense to quit being a staff member as soon as I saw how crazy things were behind the scenes
AND
brave enough to not be anonymous on these boards!

Please give examples of the "crazy things" that were "behind the scenes" that you saw as a staff member that you had not seen before. Thank you.
Any other Staff who would like to respond, please do. Thank you for the information, it is helpful.

Whatever Sophie. I heard you still brainwash children. Do you really think anonymous posting on an internet message board compares to how much "common sense" you lacked to sign yourself into Straight? Things were crazy "in front" of the scenes at Straight. You had no common sense. Just admit it, and quit being so defensive.

during my 4 year association with str8 on backlick road I do not recall anyone younger than 12 being admitted. The oldest was 28.
