CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / CEDU auction
« on: October 24, 2011, 12:50:33 PM »
The old mother of all emotional growth schools, CEDU, went of the auction block on October 20th at the courthouse in Chino California.  Has anyone heard who will purchase it or what it will become...other than the ghost town it now is...

I am curious, Nigel, I assume you had psychological and academic testing done on your son, either prior to or during his stay at Aspen Ranch.  Was the individual who perfromed the testing, if it was a done, a psychologist and what instruments did they use?  What did his scores look like?  Was there a discrepancy between his verbal and performance scores?  Your description of his inability to carry out academic goals might be answered by appropriate testing.  If testing was done prior to Aspen, it might bode well to have him retested.  Frequently, depression can negatively surpress scores and a change in his scores would and could identify that.

The industry needs to be regulated by a governmental body other than regulating themselves...we've already seen how well that worked with Wall Street and banking!  All of these so called "therapeutic" programs should be licensed by State Mental Health as well as made to follow the education codes of their respective states. The educational piece should be delivered via state standards and guidelines and the should be held accountable via standardized testing (the Stanford for private schools would work).

We firmly believe there to be no basis for these actions.
A student died, not the first, in their care and there is no basis for action?  How bloody cold hearted and ignorant is that?

Over the course of our 12 year history, our program has adhered to the highest standards of care and we currently meet or exceed all industry and state standards.
The industry standards?  What a joke, "the industry" makes billions from the pain and suffering of children and families.  They are ghouls without standards themselves, except making the bucks, how can they possibly set standards?

We were the first wilderness program to be individually accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, and we are licensed by the State of Oregon to work with students who are experiencing issues with substance abuse and are also licensed by the State of Oregon as both an Outdoor Youth Program and Private School.
It takes nothing, but filling out a form to receive accredidation from the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, hence many states do not recognize these wilderness programs and they cannot receive funding from educational funds states and districts set aside for bonafide "non-public schools."  There is no actual education in these programs and yet NAAS will certify them for a price.  As far as a licensed private school, again, it is a simple form to be completed and mailed into the state.
Close the whole industry down!

I cannot believe in my wildest dreams that any parent, after reading the parent handbook, would continue to keep there child in a prison like MBA or any other school for that matter.  My son is 27 now and yes, we went through some difficult years during his late teens.  I did send him to a two week program with intensive therapy, group, individual and family (in person, not a conference call). However, to send him away for 18 months to 2 years to a program where I had limited communication with him and received reports about him from a biased third part...what the heck kind of parenting is that?    It is certainly NOT what I signed on for when I had a child.

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / Re: DOJ Inquiry
« on: November 13, 2009, 01:59:06 PM »
This was before my time, but I remember the investigation on the 14 year old.  The CEDU explanation at the time was that the 14 year old, who was physically and mentally disabled, went off in a snow storm.  There was CEDU speculation that his family picked him up and did away with him and were pursuing this investigation to cover their tracks...so typical of CEDU to not accept the responsibility for their own actions....Dr. Powell of Benchmark should know all about this; he was in charge of psych services then.  The 17 year old from the high school, supposedly left during a propheet by climbing out the bathroom window, but now that this has come to light ...HMMMMMMMM!  Again, typical of CEDU, I was told that he had gang connections, was a reall bad egg and probably disappeared into Mexico.  They are both probably lying deep in the forest somewhere.
I wonder if either family can sue  Powell or the Wasserman family for their horrendous hiring practices that ultimately ended in the disappearances of these two.

The spotlight is on ALL abusive programs.  As previously stated, counsel for Aspen admitted in court that the programs they offer are not truly therapeutic...you don't think word of this will spread through out the industry.  And don't forget the death at Sagewalk...the spotlight is on this crappy industry that makes big bucks as the bloodsuckers of childrens' pain!

It was before my time, but I believe they both came from CEDU, Running Springs.  I am absolutely thrilled that another one of these abusive, money for pain profiteers has bitten the dust.  I hope this is a trend.

"The action that the DHS took is extremely disruptive to the lives of the students and the teachers at this school. The question that needs to be asked is why they could not have taken a less severe disciplinary action?

You look at some of the things that they call out, like not letting students go to the bathroom... now don't you think that most high school football coaches can be just as "abusive" to their players?

The reenacting of past abuse... could that also be construed as part of the therapeutic process?

The sexualized role play... whatever exactly that is. But even it were bad, might this have just been limited to one teacher, might a particular student have lent an less than objective point of view?

Somebody is on a witch hunt here. This business of rehabilitating these problem students is not cut and dry, latitude is required, let's get real here. Now maybe the school crossed the line... and if so, I say a handslap is what is required, not a school closure."

Oh come on!!!!the "teachers" at this school?  How many had actual teaching credentials?  Further, I do not know about Oregon, but in California it is illegal to not allow a student to use the bathroom.  It is also illegal, per the Ed. Code to use a physical punishment or anything else that might humiliate a student. It's illegal because of the damage it does to the child! How perverse and for what benefit would it be for a group of non-licensed adults to encourage a former rape victim to act in a sexual manner as part of pyschodrama?  Maybe the parents of "problem" students might want to try parenting and local assistance rather than shipping the kids off.... I deal with "problem" students all day...I work in public school as a special education teacher.    I allow my students to use the restroom when they ask.  I also worked in one of these so called "therapeutic" schools and bottom line, it was all about the almighty dollar, power and control, and in the end, nothing more. I am sure there are so decent programs out there somewhere, but these corporate run, mismanaged, poorly staff facilities are not among them.
A handslap for 11 counts of child abuse!  Would you feel the same way if someone abused your child, or yourself to the the tune of 11 counts and their hands were slapped?

Twelve percent of ASR students had attempted suicide prior to treatment, and none reported attempting suicide after treatment.

B.S.  I know of at least 4 CEDU students who committed suicide after CEDU...there are probably several more.

Students, parents and staff went to the police about CEDU.  They were still under investigation on a variety of charges when they chose to drain all the money and close.  I am thrilled to see another abusive program bite the dust!

According to a friend of mine who has a personal and close relationship with two MBA staff members...their statements indicated that the student "lied" who initially reported the incidents "lied" and "whined."  After reading all of these posts and the comments from the state, it amazes me that they can come to this conclusion.  One would think, when reprimanded in such strong terms after an intensive investigation, that one would consider the viability of the reports and perhaps try to mend the abusive ways.  These staffers are so brain washed themselves that they can not recognize the harm they inflict....and as far as being therapeutic...was there a psychologist, licensed social worker or marriage family counselor in any of these Lifetsteps?  How can they taut themselves to be therapeutic? I'm just glad another one bit the dust.  Hopefully, this will become a trend!

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / The "new" CEDU

I haven't seen anything about the "new" CEDU's in Idaho.  Is there a different site?  Or is there nothing going one there?

Surely you are saying this in jest....important tool for brainwashing nonsense.
