"In my quick running of the numbers, I calculated about 6% of the current U.S. marijuana studies investigate the benefits of medical marijuana. The rest are designed to investigate harm. That imbalance paints a highly distorted picture."

It seems like these schools have changed to having the students communicate with their families using Skype now instead of snail mail.  I like the upgrade!

I think everyone is hoping that she does well.

Quote
After an attempted suicide back in June, Paris Jackson is reportedly doing great at her new therapeutic high school, according to Radar Online.
The school, the location of which Radar doesn't disclose, specializes in working with troubled teen girls. It's reportedly in the mountains, and she was photographed with peers back in July at a graduation ceremony.
A source told the website that, “Paris is absolutely thriving and happy at the boarding school. She is making friends, and it’s wonderful to see, given the darkness that had taken over her life. Paris regularly video chats with grandmother, Katherine, biological mom, Debbie Rowe, and her brothers."
Prior to heading to this school, the 15-year-old tried to take her own life by cutting her wrists and swallowing a bottle of Motrin, leaving a suicide note before calling a suicide hotline. The hotline operator called 9-1-1.
It wasn't clear exactly what prompted the suicide attempt, but her family had been fighting over custody of Paris and her brothers, and she was reportedly being bullied at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Are there safe programs?

It is finally here. The Fix My Kid fundraiser is live!

Please help us spread the word and finish this film. The pitch from the directors starts after the trailer. This is for all those
we have lost, all those who have been hurt, and all those who currently suffer inside these programs. You will not be forgotten.

Quoting the "Fix my kids movie" link above:

"The report on the hearing also states that "many programs and many people around the country [are] committed to helping improve the lives of young people and who do good work every day, but it is difficult for parents to tell the good programs from the bad. And that difference can be lethal."

I have always been interested in why no one has ever engaged in an open discussion here on fornits on this topic.  Its seems to be taboo for some reason.  The rest of the world understands and realizes that there are good and bad programs but, for the most part, no one is willing to discuss helping the young people and their parents choose the best path possible or help them differentiate between the good programs and the bad ones.  The lack of discussion seems to lean towards allowing the status quo to continue.

Two boys ran away from one of the places mentioned earlier in the thread. They murdered two elderly disabled persons during their escape. Neighbors are surprised and afraid that the unregulated religious facility which takes on any problem a boy can suffer from to cure them with prayers and hard work pose a security risk in their local community.

Here are several other message boards where the LUC ranch murders are debated:

    *
Shane Hicks-my name.LUC BOYS RANCH- joke (Topix)
* No discussion on the Trace Hollow/Lampe murders ? (1 Branson message board)
* About these boarding schools (Minors in residential placement research center)
* Trace Hollow homicides ? (HWY-13)
[/list]

A good case/argument where minors should be tried as adults.  Also a good example of schools not properly screening their applicants to see if they have the proper program, in place, to help them.

as a former resident of tba I am very sad to hear they are closed. I was there 2001-2003 just before I turned 18 I was released I rember that place as my home the one place where no matter how much I pushed staff away and I mean spitting, bitting, hitting and cutting with my words they always forgave me and kept loving me. for the time when I came of age and had to leave I cried becuse I had found a home. before tba I had been kicked out of every foster home, group home and even treatment centers tba kept me. I jumped off a roof of one treatment center when I was on one to one that is a place that needs to be shut down not tba. I was very troubled and no I wasn't perfect when I left it took years to fix my life but today I am a married woman with a amazing daughter that I can give her every thing I never had and I look back on tba and many staff with very fond memorys even with all my craziness they loved me. these judgmently people have no idea what staff deal with.i was the exsplosive child that went off for the smallest reasons and got the borad the shots and the lock down hall. I read someone say theres a reason a kid would go off for 5 hours and that's not true! the children are sick and don't need a reason speaking from exprince here people. im so sorry for all the ignorant comments to the staff at tba you helped mold me ansd i am greatful for all of you

Thank you punkrockmissy for sharing your story.  It is nice to hear more than one side and I have always believed that staff members have the best interest of the children at heart regardless of the program they are in.  I wish that more people would express this and other more positive aspects of their stay at various schools.

McDowell authorities: Teen missing from wilderness therapy program in Old Fort (McDowell News)

It is the third recorded escape attempt which have reached the newspapers. The area is covered with wood. It is easy to get lost and there have properly been more than those we have been able to spot in the media.

Other sources:
Missing and wanted (Fornits Wiki)

There are lots of trails in the vicinity (old boy scout camp) and an active railroad that passes through the camp carrying coal, I think, through the mountains.  I remember it woke me up in the middle of the night as it passed over the high ridge over the camp the night we stayed with the campers.  The squealing of the wheels was piercing.  Its hot there right now and hopefully he is traveling at night when it is cooler.

Whooter, weren't you banned on a wager that you couldn't stop stalking DJ?

Like I said I dont think anyone could produce more than a dozen PMs from me for the past 7 years, so no it wasn't stalking.  In short, I exposed some sensitive information which didnt make DJ happy and PM'd him, he wasnt happy and asked the admins to restrict me from PMing him again.  I agreed not to and a few days or weeks later I pm'd one of his aliases which technically broke the agreement I had with Fornits admins.  As a result I was banned.  I argued that I never pm'd DJ directly so I should not have been banned,  but since PMing one of his many aliases did constitute a communication I accepted the banning and did post after that date until now that it has changed hands.
I hope this clears it up.  It really doesnt have any effect on anyone and wasnt a reflection of my behavior on the open forum so I think we can all move forward.

When I was global moderator formerly "The gatekeeper" you would send me massive complaints about DJ and DJ would send me massive complaints about you.  The closest analogy I can think of is  a mother babysitting two children.  The two of you would provoke each other, often derailing threads.  I voiced my opinion that both of you should be banned.  The furthest I got with psy, was a temporary ban.  You were given a lot of leeway because you were viewed as "a catalyst for discussion" as lifeboat wrote earlier in this thread.

Nice try Joe, but your story doesn't hold water,  I never sent massive complaints about anyone.  Like DJ you could never produce any of these massive pms I supposedly have sent.  In fact I dont think anyone could produce more that a dozen PMs I have sent "anyone" over the past 7 years.  I think most people know that I prefer to converse on the open forum.

But that is in the past, lets focus on moving forward.

If you recall, for the most part,  many threads were derailed as a result of my posts and opinions being attacked by those people who had a difficult time expressing themselves or their point of view.  DJ especially struggled with controlling his frustration yielding to his instinct to attacking people vs expressing an opposing opinion intelligently and engaging in a more civil dialog.  This behavior of attacking the poster vs attacking the subject matter or topic of a particular thread resulted in many threads being derailed.

Then why were you the only one banned?

Whooter violated a pm restraining order  ::deadhorse::

Exactly!

I knew at least a dozen kids who would not go to school if their parents didnt force them or threaten them on some level.
We use to sometimes scream “help” and “we are being kidnapped” out our school bus window on the way to school a few times, for grins, but people would just laugh and point at us because we were in a yellow bus which the townspeople have paid for to transport kids to school.  It didnt matter to anyone that some of us were being transported against our will.  If we were being driven to school in another vehicle other than a bus I think we would have attracted a lot more attention.

So yelling “I am being kidnapped” from an unmarked vehicle would certainly draw attention but as long as the transport agency is licensed and has the parents’ consent I don’t see how it could be considered breaking the law. Also, If transport agencies had a history of abuse I could see being concerned for the kids.

Matt,do you really think a couple of hundred disgruntled voices can stand in the way of real money being made? By anybody? Pretty naive.

None-ya has a good point, The economy picture has had a tremendous influence over the past several years and a few disgruntled or even a few hundred vs the tens of thousands who have benefited from these schools, as None-ya has brought up, could not have had much of an impact.  If you look at the media reports there has been none (or very little) negative press to support the closings are due to this.  The economy has been a much more predominant driving force.

The fluctuation in the TTI will continue and as the economy rises and falls so will the specialty schools that are supported by "out of pocket" finances.

Academy Director John Young said they have welcomed investigations into the claims.

"They talked to every kid," Young said about the county investigators, "and the kid admitted to them, 'I just want to go home, so I lied on them so hopefully they'll close this place down so I can go home."

"We have found no credible evidence to support any claims of any physical abuse," District Attorney Ashley Rich said.

Any time there are allegations of abuse there is going to be a story and the news media is going to bite and write the story because that is what they do.  But there are many kids who just want to go home and will say anything to just get out and wish the place would just get shut down so they could go home (which the above statement supports).  Parents see this so clearly, so when there really are abuses going on how are we suppose to differentiate from those students who are abused from those who are not?

Is the book positive negative or neutral, because if it implies that CEDU is at all beneficial, I have no intention of reading it. That place was therapeutic fraud.  I want a book I can send my parents.

loli, If I may make a suggestion, you should consider accepting other people’s opinions and view points.  You may see that many people share similar experiences but different outcomes.  For what it is worth, from a parent’s perspective, if a child told me that there was not one thing positive about their time in a program or that they could not think of one thing that was negative I would suspect them of being disingenuous.

If you took a more open minded approach and met your parents half way I think they would be more receptive to listening to your experiences and understanding what you went through at CEDU, if that is truly one of your goals.
