Title: your first concert
Post by: GregFL on June 10, 2004, 10:36:00 AM
The video of the rockers in the other thread gave me an idea for a new thread.

Post your experience at your first rock concert. When was it? What band? Drugs? good or bad experience?

I will Start. I was 13 and the year was 73. I saw Jethro Tull at the Bayfront Center in St Pete with my neihbor girl and her older sister. I smoked about a dime bag and did half a hit of choclate mesc.

I remember when the lights went down everyone in the place lit a joint. This was my first experience tripping. Jethro tull seemed almost mystical and the place was surreal to me. The music was fucking outstanding and he did the whole aqualung album.  I remember  a smile glued on my face and feeling almost a magical element to the evening. It was just great.

As an adult about 10 years or so ago I went back to a Jethro Tull concert. He seemed like an old man and when he sang the lyrics you could tell he didn't believe them anymore. He sucked.

But that first night, that first concert, I will always remember as a special evening.

My first concert was in 7th garde, I saw KISS in Evansville Indiana with a friend of mine. His Dad and girlfriend took us, no drugs we wanted to get high I had two joints but could never get far away enough from his Dad to light up. The concert was great the were really quite the "Show" to see, I think it was 1979

I was 13 when my girlfriends older sisters boyfriend paid The Faction $100.00 to play on a half-pipe in Midland, TX.  Steve Caballero was bad ass.  they brought the Drab with them.  There were kegs of beer and I had some weed.   The police showed up and told the Drab to turn it down.  They turned it up, told the cop to fuck himself, and the show was then shut down.
So we moved everything to Arials (local Midland band) practice place and finished the show there.

Today Steve Caballero is a character on Tony Hawks pro skater video game.  The game features music from Reo Speeddealer, (now it's just Speeddealer because Reo Speedwagan sued them over the name.)   The first show I ever played was opening up for Reo Speeddealer in Lubbock, TX with a band called Gooey. (2 years after straight)  The Pornjunky DVD features clips of Speeddealer from when I booked them in Midland, TX.

My first concert would have been KISS when I was in 3rd grade.  My family had just moved to Midland,TX from Phoenix, AZ.  I was planning to see Kiss in Phoenix, but moved before their concert. In Midland I found out they were coming there too.    But because Kiss was the great satan, church protesters got the show cancelled.  They did the same thing to Ozzy when I was in 6th grade.  In 8th grade I finally saw a big concert which was Sammy Hagar and Krokus

My first concert was Black Sabbath in Jacksonville, FL in 1980 or so on the "Heaven and Hell" tour, RJ Dio on vocals, the rest of the band the original members.  I smoked some weed (definitely NOT TBPITW) and drank a beer or two.  The show was pretty good.  I saw them a year later on the "Mob Rules" tour, same lineup except no Bill Ward (Vinnie Appice, Carmine's bro, was drumming).  I think I saw Rush that year, too.  Didn't see many shows pre-Straight, but have seen literally thousands since.

My first was Heart at the Civic Center in Baltimore, MD.

That was 1978 or 79, so I guess it was the "Dog and the Butterfly" Tour.. ::rainbow::

One of my first concerts was Aerosmith and they were great. Drank some beer on the way to Hershey in 87 or 88. Dokken opened up for them.

My first concert was Hall & Oates.  I went with my brother and sister and a bunch of their friends.  Either Thompson Twins opened or else Til Tuesday, I can't remember anymore.  I was in Jr. High at the time.  It was before I got high the first time, so I must have been 11 or 12.  No drugs or alcohol involved.

The only concert I ever was high at was Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" tour.  Warrant opened.  They were such posers.

First concert was Black Sabbath in '70 or '71 of course drugs were involved, I'm sure they were manditory. I was 14, some older kids from work let me tag along, my parent's probaly thought it was some religous band, being the Sabbath.
BTW Greg the Tull concert at the Bayfront I think was the first date I took your sister xxxxxx on. I used to buy conterfiet tickets at Lakewood from a girl for $2. Those were the days.

I think Ive seen most of the greats..Slayer, Metallic, Suicidal Tendencies, Pantera, Morbid Angel , Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden

Then Ive sat through some really really shitty bands...Winger, Vixen, Kix, White Lion, Britney Fox...

What really sucked is in those days ...in order to see a band you wanted to see they always had some horrible gland bands with them..

I mean everyone has different tastes, and thats cool, but  some of those glam bands were just horrible..

Oh and Queensryche...that was a  band I didnt care for too much until I saw them live..and they were impressive and I went and saw them about 6 or 7 more times..
But Im a guitar freak .../shrug

This is so interesting. I also remember the counterfeit tickets to concerts but everyone was afraid to use them because they would often confiscate them at the door and you were screwed for the night. Also, jethro tull was $8.50 and that was considered an expensive show. Different era for sure.

whoever you are I would love to talk to you. I have a few suspicions if you dated my sister.  Eddie?  Whoever you are, please instant message me or email me. I would love to chat. Also, were you in the Seed, straight, or Life? Do you know my whole family?

Talk to me!!!

I agree.  That's why we usually went to this club in Houston called Backstage that had a lot of "up and coming" bands play.  I saw Gorky Park, Shock Tu, Faster Pussycat, Jane's Addiction, L. A. Guns, and a bunch of other bands that never made it anywhere that I can't remember.  There was some band that played and all I can remember was they did a metal rendition of The Three Little Pigs.  Anyone remember what band that was??

But sometimes you'd get lucky.  Like when I saw Aerosmith, The Black Crows opened which was pretty cool.  But then there were shows like Heart that I thought was gonna be awesome and COMPLETELY sucked!

Remember "white Witch?  When I was 19 they played in a club in Ft Lauderdale, a small rock club with about 12 ft ceilings. The assholes set off their pyrotechniques which back then were nothing but huge shooting sparkles, smoked out the whole place and everyone evacuated into the parking lot.

Never heard much from them after that.

I almost didnt wanna buy the ticket but I did anyway and it turned out to be Panteras last tour..

Ah yes, the Washington, DC smoke-ins.. I went to the one in 1982...a bunch of punk bands played but they were still calling it the 'smoke-in' then...later on I learned that the name of the event got changed to "rock against reagan" in later years. The bands that played were: Void, The Necros, Black Market Baby, and FEAR (who headlined)

my first concert i went to in the 7th grade and i went with my best friend at the time..duane rohlfs. yes that same guy that killed himself with my other friend chris kelley. my mother actually took duane and i to go see the jgeils band. we were so young we were not even druggy friends yet. we thought it was neat to go the bathroom and piss on the wall when they played that song. this was actually weird to see this post because i was just looking at his picture on the straights site and talking about it with my wife last night. i remember after straight, when they pulled me out of class to tell me about the suicide i was angry, especially when i found out the details and how much they hurt everyone they left behind through the notes left, etc etc. i also remember that i started lifting weights the next day and had a renewed sense of wanting to live and to be strong. i remember feeling that day that i would fucking make it no matter what. When, and there have been many times, i have seen fellow friends take their own lives or be killed, i always say this and it is because of that day when they told me duane and chris were dead. "GET BUSY LIVING YOUR OWN LIFE BECAUSE HOW YOU LIVE IT WILL BE AN ATTESTMENT TO HOW THEY LIVED THEIRS" to me this means doing the best i can so they did not live for nothing.

Funster, I just want to express my sympathy to you.  I remember when 2 staff members came and pulled me outta group when I was on 1st phase.  They took me into the carpet room and sat me down to tell me that Steve Mathews had taken his own life.  Even though I didn't know Steve before $tr8 he made a huge impression on me while I was in there.  He taught me a whole lot just by his example and I really looked up to him and tried to be like him in the way that he resisted $tr8.  At the time I wondered why they would even bother to tell me about Steve's suicide.  I was crushed man.  That guy was like a super hero to me.  I still have his picture. After they were done tellin' me the tragic news, they just set me back in group and of course I wasn't allowed to even talk to anyone about it because that would've been talkin' behind backs.  I kept all my emotions about it to myself.  it was real hard.  I really sympathize with you on this Funster.

Also, I'm sorry we've had a hard time.  I've had a real hard time since $tr8.  I don't think you understand, or maybe you do and I'm just fucked up and bitter.

Steve was a great guy, no question about it. I was newcomers with him at one time as I am sure everyone there was. We can again try to chat anytime you like, or not. I would not say that we have a hard time, but a couple of mis communications. I like you and am sorry that maybe I dont understand your situation a little better. One conversation and a few emails is not enough to understand anything, much less relationships that started under extreme duress. Maybe we should go party at matts gigaroo and see if he can actually play. No one liked my ping pong idea so i will not repeat that, but both bikes are running so you can always come down and visit the old digs anytime. Again it does not need to be a melodramatic type thing that will have a conclusion........one may never show up, but might be a good time.

Summer Jam '73 at Watkins Glenn.  The traffic was so bad we put it in park on the third lane and walked about 7 miles.  Rained most of the time, but we never knew it till we read it in the paper weeks later.  The Dead, Allman Brothers and The band.  Never met more good people in one weekend in my life. The car was still there, but someone took our windshield. When it started raining, we put our wipers on.  You should have seen the looks we got from people passing us on the highway.

remember after straight, when they pulled me out of class to tell me about the suicide i was angry, especially when i found out the details and how much they hurt everyone they left behind through the notes left, etc etc

from all i gathered about that incident, they were blasted by the f-ing staff and group....humiliated by both sides of the group! i
was especially angry when i heard that! thats what killed them! i should know,i did the same thing after i got hammered by staff{un qualified, uneducated kids with humongous ego's} if my memory of what i read online is that one of them was paraded in front of the girls side and made fun of for "supposedly" having a girlfriend!
told shit like "i hope you catch a disease!" "you're ugly" by the girls side!.....am i right? is that what happened? weren't you on staff back then?
i just want to know.....as i understand it,you were directly involved in the "witch hunt" that got put in its place on here about me! i want to "thank you" for your concern staff.....you called paul and told him what i wrote.i put the boots to that though, didn't i? i never got my chance back then, but i did on here!....its too bad those dudes didn't get the same opportunity!
you know what kills me the most about that? there was a girl that killed herself very shortly thereafter that they believe had a connection to that situation! she wasn't even in straight, but the f-ing place killed her too!....good ol' staff.....seriously,i am glad that happened...i never got the chance to be heard or anything...i walked around for years reeling from that experience....i'm not getting down on you....just "airing out" my anger at the "coc" that got sent Pauls way.....hippie

Yeah...uh...let's see here...first off to pick or change your avatar you have to go to profiles and sign in.  At the bottom of the form there you will find a rectangle labeled "avatars".

To quote other posters ...uhhh...let's see here... umm...first you have to click on the quote button under the post that you want to quote.  After that you have to place your cursor...ummm inside the quote marks and delete ever't'in but the words that you want to be quoted.  Just make sure you stay within the quote marks.  I don't know how to do the multiple quoting of one post.  Sorry.  My expertise is... uhh...still limited that way.  Others here know more tricks than me.  But thank you for taking up my time.  I'm still awake at nearly 4 in the morning and I was starting to get a little bored.  Thanx for the entertainment.

I remember our first concert together Greg.  You begged me to go see the Backstreet Boys with you.  And afterward in the backseat of your mom's Pinto I thought you were having trouble getting it up.  But it was up

I wish Reagan would hurry up and come back.  I gave him money to go get wine and condoms.  I perfer him bare, but he insisted on the condoms.
He sure has been gone a long time. :???:

Well I guess that is to be expected from somebody with the handle of Reagan Youth, what a sorry ass punk band. Did they even sell any albums other than the ones they sold out of the back of their moms station wagon. Sorry ass heroin addicted lead singer did the world a favor by blowing his brains out. Dam sissy fag.

Jax, FL 1980, Heaven and Hell tour, with R.J. Dio on vocals.  Pretty fun show.  Saw them a year later for The Mob Rules and it sucked ass.  Lame opening acts both times.

First time is always the best.  My brothers girlfriend took me to see Jethro Tull at the spectrum in Philly, I remember they had these two runways going out into the crowd and when they played ?Locomotive Breath? (20 minutes or more) Ian Anderson was at the end of one and  Martin Barre (guitar) ?, I think was at the end of the other.  We had floor tickets and we were about 40 feet from Anderson.  I don?t think I blinked once during the entire song,  Wasn?t my first, but definitely in my top 10.

I was 14 at the time and yes lord I was learning how to get blistered....I remember drinking a bunch of draft beer and smoking pot on the way to the concert in the back of an old dodge van with tear drop windows in the back and the music cranking as loud as we could get it

When we got there people were smoking doobies and passing them down the line...( God that was great ) I remember going to the bathroom and watching some cops take down a guy that was selling some type of drugs.

Then I remember Blue Oyster Cult....A big Godzilla head coming out on stage and the crowd going wild. " Oh no they say he's got to go...go go Godzilla ". It was the beginning of many concerts that I've been to.

Actually, RJ Dio did a pretty good job of infusing some life into a band that was, at the time, disentegrating.  A lot of the songs on Heaven and Hell sound a lot like Rainbow (Dio's band with Deep Purple alum Ritchie Blackmore) and a lot of them sound very much like Black Sabbath.  They opened the show with "War Pigs", encored with "Children of the Grave", and played a pretty solid set in between, with Sabbath classics and stuff off of Heaven and Hell pretty well represented.  There were LOTS of pyrotechnics, and some pretty cool lighting effects.....during the break in the song "Heaven and Hell", Dio sang a little ditty, culminating in the lines, "leave me alone/don't tell me what to do/cause I've got to burn in Hell with all of you",(you can hear it in it's entirety on Live Evil, the live album from the two tours Sabbath did with Dio) as he pointed to the audience, and the lighting effects on him made him look like he was made out of glowing coal embers for a second or two.  He did a good job filling in for Ozzy, but by the time the band came around the next year, they were again falling apart, and were sleepwalking through the tour for the album The Mob Rules, which is a lame-ass record anyway.  Saw the Sabs with Ozzy, too, but that's another story.
