The Troubled Teen Industry / Is alcoholism REALLY genetic?
« on: November 09, 2007, 08:20:54 PM »
My 'rents are convinced so.

My dad is alcoholic.

I'm a fucking snob who goes for high priced microbrews or imported trappist belgians... and I don't get cheap or popular scotches when I get them either. I talk to the guys who work there and get what they like.

I DONT DRINK TO GET DRUNK I SNOB OVER SMELLS AND TASTE. I SNIFF CORKS. I'm also buzzed now after a 42 hour work week.

ANYWAY, any truth behind it? Or is alcoholism = genetic = bullshit?

So I'm at work. Guy comes in wanting lights for his car.

Big whoop.

He mentions prices going up. I mention inflation. We start talking about indexing and printing money, etc.... turns out he worked for the state of Florida.

So I idly mention straight and the room falls really silent. "You're not too happy about it huh..."

"No." I say.

Let's just say his kid was in there, and his justification that nothing there happened amounts to... "well he ran away twice bla bla bla then went back and we asked him in front of everybody is anything going on"

I'm not one to cause scenes with customers, or old men, but I'm damn sure after mentioning "Niles" and "fornits" he'll be here or back at my place of work soon enough. If you're reading this now... get ready to fall through the looking glass. There was a lot of shit that happened at straight and people here got a lot to say about it.

We left on good terms and I'd like to stay that way, but why not step inside and see it from the POV of the kid stuck in the host home and doing raps all day, not a parent told what they wanted you to hear.

ALSO... guys, anyone wanna give me a nice pile-o-proof to show him if he shows up again to bolster my argument? IIRC he even mentioned something about his son was questioned about this...

.. and to help explain to my coworkers this isn't some "Secret government thing" and I'm not THAT shady

Obviously not the work of anyone with a brain, or a funny glitch.

In either event, I hope someone sees this.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Niles's program hospital!

Lets say you broke your arm, and I get rich and open a Program Hospital.

Now, in a regular hospital, they'd do triage, take insurance info, x-ray, maybe immunizations or tetanus shots, blah blah blah, set the bones, cast it or use traction, give you some pain pills if necessary, and send you on your way.

In a PROGRAM hospital, you'd go into "intake" where I would berate you and grille you while strip searching you with other people with broken arms in casts about the bad choices you made that resulted in your broken arm, and choosing to be there, accordingly. Then you'd be given ill fitting, dirty clothes and be given an oldcomer to lead you around the program.

Eventually, I'd set the arm and give you a cast, and I would have gotten your insurance info after I had the escorts kidnap you and throw you into the ambulance   rofl:

So you'd go up the levels and then I'd call in some creep to do seminars about the bad choices you made and how you hurt your loved ones and were a drain on the system by breaking your arm, and make you do emotional growth work. If you didn't cooperate I'd make you stay longer or restrain you.

After several months you'd complete the program, get the cast taken off, and go home! Oh, and using a coat hangar to scratch under the cast is a Cat4 offence!

Therapy, Doctors, and what have you.... treat until the problem is fixed. If someone NEEDS treatment they only force it as much as is necessary to keep them alive. If its is voluntary, it only goes as long as the person can benefit from treatment for a real problem AND they're willing to seek that treatment.

Should the problem be resolved or they decide they don't want help anymore, it stops.

On the other hand, programs, or to make a new lingo to be specific a "duckfarm" keeps them until they complete the program. Not until anything is fixed, if anything is wrong at all.

Why is that? How is that justified? How is the isolation and confinement and coercion and lack of any say-so justified in this situation at all?

It really feels like I can't win. But then again, my only experience to go by as an adult would be northern Florida.

In TL;DR form, basically, I'm wondering if its where (hicks... geriatrics, and rednecks) or what (Niles) I am that is making it such a pain to get out, get connections, meet people I enjoy being around, and just have a life!

I VERY, VERY rarely meet geeks here. VERY rarely! I VERY rarely met people who think and feel the way I do here. Then again, I'm in the same state that exonerated people who beat a child to death, on film.

 I sure as hell can make work or business connections, though. *sigh*

I don't want this to be a Florida bitch fest (FARK does a great job of making fun of Florida anyway) but I wonder if I just have to learn to drink tea from an empty cup and make do with the company around me, or if I should just get to a place that would be more likely for me to find people like me.

And of course, there's a chance that everyone hates me as much as I hate everyone else

I dunno. I know in Florida there are a FEW cool people, but I haven't met any of them yet.

GREG, I'm looking at you.

Wine-tasting event flier not tasteful
Editorial / Opinion
Article Launched: 09/29/2007 10:15:51 AM EDT

Kerrie Tarbell of Leominster told the Sentinel & Enterprise recently that she complained to the school department when her 12-year-old son, Nathaniel, came home from Samoset Middle School with a flier advertising a wine-tasting event.

Tarbell, 37, said the flier, promoting a wine tasting on Thursday to raise money for the nonprofit Leominster Education Foundation, isn't an appropriate thing to go home with kids.

She wasn't expecting to see it again, but last week her 11-year-old son, Casey, came home from Fall Brook Elementary School with the same flier.

"The schools are basically saying, 'Hey, there's a wine tasting, give this to mommy and daddy so we can get drunk with them,'" Tarbell said.

Other parents have also complained to the Sentinel & Enterprise, saying the flier has come home with children as young as first-graders.

Tarbell said the flier sends kids the message that drinking is acceptable.

"It's not appropriate, it's telling kids it's OK," she said. "With all the information telling you about drugs, alcohol, saying 'watch out for your prescription drugs,' this is the wrong message. What if they're not getting good guidance at home? Shouldn't they at least be getting good guidance at school, always?"

But Superintendent Nadine Binkley said she didn't think the flier was inappropriate.

"It's not promoting it for students," Binkley said. "We're promoting it for parents. It's a wine tasting. I didn't think it was inappropriate,

and we're not inviting students to be part of it."

Binkley said the event, which is nearly sold out, is not an opportunity for adults to get drunk, but rather sample wine and appetizers and socialize.

"This is not an event I would imagine people becoming inebriated at," she said. "You taste very, very small quantities of wine. It's much more of a social event."

The foundation is raising money to purchase mobile computer labs for city schools, and has already raised $16,600, not counting the money from tickets to the wine tasting, Binkley said.

Karyn Doherty, secretary of the foundation committee, said she is sensitive to Tarbell's complaint and said she will consider advertising another way if the wine tasting becomes an annual event.

"Anytime you do something for the first time, you're going to get scrutinized ... It's meant to be a social event, we're not focusing on the alcohol consumption," she said. "This is the first complaint I've heard."

Certainly, we don't think there's anything wrong with the education foundation holding a wine-tasting event to raise money for the public schools.

But they have to understand that whenever alcohol is served at a fundraiser, or in this case is the primary focus of the fundraiser, it's going to raise questions and some concerns.

We also think Binkley is naive to think that some people -- even if it's just a few people -- won't be walking out of the fundraiser a little more inebriated than when they went in.

We encourage the event's organizers to make sure these people have rides home.

At the same time, we think it was a poor decision to send the fliers home with students, especially young students, who shouldn't be concerning themselves with wine-tasting events.

There's plenty of ways to make the public aware of these events, including through this newspaper, without sending wine-tasting fliers home with very young children.

       BECAUSE SPITTING OUT WINE INTO A BUCKET MEANS YOURE A FUCKING DRUNKARD!!!

Jesus CHRIST what is wrong with our culture. People flip out with the anti drug nonsensical bullshit about a wine tasting for thier PARENTS.

Holy shit!
