The reality is the public has sympathy for these autistic kids because they are retarded. Troubled teens are painted in the news as thugs, drug users, mischief makers, and criminals. The public cheers the mistreatment of the troubled teen while feeling guilty for harming a perceived innocent. It's interesting how that can work.
