Title: 100 Acre Wood
Post by: Whooter on September 18, 2010, 05:44:13 PM
Was this a precursor to programs as they are defined today?  Was Milne and Disney laying the ground work or planting the seeds in people’s minds?

There are always references of going “into” or “out of” the “100 acre wood” by Characters in the story.  Since the 100 Acre Woods is adjacent to the larger forest would this be considered local services or long term placement?   Each character obviously had an issue and entered the "Wood" with a problem.

Was the message that allowing kids with various problems to run together freely therapeutic?  Or was the message telling us that all these characters were getting worse by allowing their individual issues to fester and go untreated?  Or maybe children don’t recognize the idiosyncratic quirks in each other as we adults do.

Maybe adults worry too much.

Piglet, although very lovable, clearly had an anxiety disorder of some type and was placed into the "100 acre Wood" by Milne for a specific reason.

I thought it was the 3 acre wood?

http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/nitt ... 10164.html (http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/nitty-gritty-dirt-band/house-at-pooh-corner-10164.html)

Christopher Robin and I walked along
Under branches lit up by the moon
Posing our questions to Owl and Eeyore
As our days disappeared all too soon
But I wandered much further today than I should
And I can't find my way to the three-acre wood
[/b]
So help me if you can I've got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one
You'd be surprised there's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin
And Pooh

Winnie The Pooh doesn't know what to do
Got a hunny jar stuck on his nose
He came to me asking help and advice
And from here no one knows where he goes
So I sent him to ask of the Owl if he's there
How to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

So help me if you can I've got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one
You'd be surprised there's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin
Back to the ways of Christopher Robin
Back to the days of Pooh

Hmmm...  I remember that song myself.  "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band", we were all pretty high in the 60's and 70's.    The original story book and Disney stories refer to it as the "100 acre wood"

Maybe the 3 acre wood is a particular spot in the 100 acre wood. Is there a map anywhere we could consult?

I remember that Owls' House served as the entrance to the "100 Acre Wood".  He was the gate keeper (Or maybe Educational Consultant).

Isn't it Kenny Loggins, who sings this song?

Yes he did.  He revived the song, reworded it a bit and took out the "3 acre wood"  reference and changed it to "Back to the Wood".  This was in the mid 1990's I believe.

We had the Nitty-Gritty version. I also really liked:

I knew a man Bojangles and he'd dance for you
In worn out shoes
With silver hair, a ragged shirt, and baggy pants
The old soft shoe
He jumped so high, jumped so high
Then he lightly touched down

I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
as he spoke right out
He talked of life, talked of life, he laughed
clicked his heels and stepped

He said his name "Bojangles" and he danced a lick
across the cell
He grabbed his pants and spread his stance,
Oh he jumped so high and then he clicked his heels
He let go a laugh, let go a laugh
and shook back his clothes all around

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance

He danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs
throughout the south
He spoke through tears of 15 years how his dog and him
traveled about
The dog up and died, he up and died
And after 20 years he still grieves

He said I dance now at every chance in honky tonks
for drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
'cause I drinks a bit
He shook his head, and as he shook his head
I heard someone ask him please

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance..

I Believe all the friends in the 100 acre wood fall under the DSM-IV diagnosis.
Tigger would qualify has having ADHD.

Tigger was also a bit of a Narcissist. But then that is just the way cats are.

True, Buzz. that is a natural trait of the cat family.  But all the hyperactivity and eating of the various vegetation leads me to believe he may have a substance abuse problem and a tendency to self medicate.

If we took a look at Eeyore....  It must had been a very traumatic experience when he had his tail amputated.  But he never talks about it.  This could contribute to the cause of his low moods and sudden onset of depression.  He frequently suffers from housing problems as do most of the characters in the "100 acre wood".
