What you have to keep in mind is that while at HLA (at least when I was there) no student truly owned anything. Upon arrival an admintance counselor would escort you to your room and would begin going through all of your stuff with you. Anything deemed inappropriate would be confiscated and suposedly sent home. Anything they allowed you to keep could be confiscated at any moment and sent home. Anything your parents sent you was first rifiled through by staff members and anything they deemed inappropriate was confiscated and possibly sent home. Nothing was out of bounds. Any books that you recieved were "donated" to the library. You were supposedly allowed to get them back upon leaving but it didnt always work out that way. You also had a great deal of theft in the dorms.

As to moving rocks, this was fairly standard. When any general maintaince work couldnt be found we were generally forced to move rocks around a field and or railroad ties.

Any luggage you arrived with was immediately sent home. Again supposedly. I would guess this had to do with a lack of space in the dorms for things like luggage. I would say the brown paper bags is a step up though from the usual treatment. There was a poster here about a year ago, George who had his stuff mailed back to him in a greasy box from the kitchen. I know several people who when pulled were given plastic garbage bags. I was afforded neither luxury. I was handed a pile of clothes when I left and told to get out. Luckily another student tossed me a backpack on my way down the road.

Something along those lines. I'd rather not get to detailed about my leaving HLA on a public forum. Despite their best efforts these morons still haven't pegged down who I am, I'd prefer to leave it that way.

I'm surprised he arrived with anything. They typically leave with the clothes they're wearing and everything is shipped.

Regarding the rock moving. Several comments at MySpace and a few here.

Fair enough. I think you paint a good enough picture of you departure. So what is the skinny on the rock thing? How far and how much was involved on an average day?

It depended on the mood of the restrictions staff. Sometimes it could be as short as the length of a tennis court with rocks the size of footballs. Othertimes it could be around the lake with rocks the size of medicine balls.

I'm working on that, as time allows. Guess I could post what I have an update.
