Title: Does Fornits have a positive or negative effect on your life
Post by: Anonymous on June 07, 2007, 01:55:40 AM
I wonder what it would be like if we all didn't have the internet and just would have been scattered and never able to talk to each other.
Would it have been better?

It would be the same I think... just not so immediate and forgotten. I sure am glad for the internet though, yes??

Interesting, very intersting. Those are the words I would use to describe its effect.

Even though the hard questions can sometimes hurt short term..its better to confront this stuff head on that to avoid it and hope it doesn't rear its ugly head later. right

I would say both. I've only ventured into 2 of the forums on here...this open free for all, and my native cedu/brown schools. I've gotten into some pretty good discussions here in the free for all. not sure how much it really benefitted my life, but it was good to see other people's points of view on different topics.

cedu/brown schools on the other hand...there isn't a single thread on there that has more than 2 or 3 thoughtful posts in a row. concerning the thoughtless shit people spew in there for no reason other than that it's the only power they wield in their miserable little lives, I went from pissed off to frustrated to thoroughly disenchanted. sadly, though, the real issues that weigh on my mind that I would like to address are the ones regarding cedu/brown schools. so....fuck it.

I'll just keep havin' coffee with my old cedu buddy every couple weeks.

I used to think overwhelmingly positive.  But then there have been a few times that fornits has had a pretty negative effect, mostly from my obsessing over all this pain.  That said, I still think that the net effect is quite positive.  I obviously still have much to work through.

Without fornits I would of killed myself a long time ago.
Take whatever answer you wish from that, I am not telling.

Awwww.. come on now, I must have said at least one good thing to you, didn't I?  :P

The CEDU forums have definitely calmed down a bit in the past two years. When I first got here, it was a flame-fest. (Not as bad as the Elan forums, but close.) That's actually one of the reasons I left fornits for about a year. (I think, maybe 8 months or so.) I just got bored with it all.  But it seems to be ok now for the most part. Although within the past week someone has been posting a couple or three nonsequitor political rant threads in there, which really doesn't bother me, actually. dishduty has been responding in kind with his own brand of absurdity.

Anyway, come back to the CEDU forums if you are so inclined. We have an april-fresh scent, now.

I'll give it to you Castle, you fall under that designation of thoughtful posts. In fact you'd probably remember me, my username was dniceo7, we kept that forum real a few times. But I took a fornits leave of absence as well, probably closer to 18 months or so. I was tired of the little bitches who knew who I was reading my posts and then hunting down my contact info and harassing my family and I. But if it's calmed down a bit, maybe it's time to make my grand reappearance. Pop the corks baby, I'm back.

Fornits has a negative impact on my life.
It resurfaces memories that otherwise would be lost forever.
It brings together people who should never talk to each other again.
Once you know it exists you cannot just stop coming.
Which makes it even more confusing.

I think CEDU was invaluable in a way. I never spoke about it before I found this site and I needed to process the experience. I don't post much in that wing now, though. I just needed the catharsis. Plus it was cool to just talk to people who had the same surreal experience 'cause it really is beyond civilian comprehension.

I thought the CEDU forum engendered thoughtful, meaningful, intense discussion until the beginning of 2005 and then it was overrun by teenagers with threads like: Biggest Sluts/Stinkiest Student etc.   That was when I completely lost interest.  --Besides the fact that I binged and purged myself of every thought concerning CEDU. Now, things just come up once in a while. I probably learn more from the Seed/Straight thread, but those aren't as active as they used to be.

Don't kid yourself Lea, I was a teenager posting in the CEDU forum (well, I turned 20 in 2005), and I am confident that I was one of the more respectful and thought-provoking posters in there. All the "old school" CEDU alum were calling for degrees of reform that had already been implemented, so it was pretty important to have a few thoughtful, more recent graduates in there to reflect on what progress, if any, had been made.

And as far as the bashing that took place, yea I'll admit that a lot of it was fueled by some of the younger posters. Some of it got so tiring that even I said enough and stopped posting on fornits altogether for almost 2 years. But I distinctly remember the most hateful, ridiculous, thought-hindering poster to be Anne Hall, a program PARENT. I personally know a number of students my age that were doing their best to contribute to the CEDU forum, so let's not blanket us as overrunning the forum with our bullshit. In reality, it was the same couple of kids engaging in sockpuppetry to make it seem as if they were overrunning the forum. And the "adults" in the forum gave into it and spewed hatred right back at them, perpetuating it all.

Anyways, I'm glad the haters, young and old, have lost interest in flaming and the CEDU forum has returned to "normal".

It is not the site itself which creates a positive or negative effect, rather, it is how we respond to the often sudden, flood of memories of our own experiences that dictate the effect.  Admittedly, my own initial reaction was highly negative, although expunging those memories here was quite cathartic.  On the heels of that initial reaction, I made a full fledged effort to turn the tide, to make some kind of a difference with a positive goal; I hope that I helped a few people.  I do feel that the effect, as a whole, was negative, due to the obsession inspired in reaction to the experiences of myself and others, although there were some bright, positive moments when I felt as if I had helped a few people because of those experiences.

Am I so much more stable and mentally/emotionally whole since I stopped haunting Fornits regularly?  Nope, but I'm a little less obsessed and a little less angry.  I miss some of the friends I made here too.  I also discovered that I'm not as open and accepting as I thought I was.  I was highly disappointed in myself.  An apology is due and I don't know how to express it, but there it is, for what little it's worth.
