The Troubled Teen Industry / God's Law.
« on: August 31, 2007, 02:22:30 PM »
In christian theology it is understood that Jesus' coming and death  on the cross released us from the laws of the old testament. A lot of pseudochristians (such as the American religious right) pick and choose which laws were removed (such as touching the skin of a pig or ostracising menstruating women) and some that apparently were not (such as stoning homosexuals to death),
The simple fact is that once Jesus died on that cross all of those old laws and rules became void. If it's not in the new testament, preferably from the mouth of Jesus himself then it doesn't count.

We raise our kids to live by God's Law.If any of our kids don't follow God's law below, they are going to a program to be saved!

SNIP!

Your arguments here are theologically unsound. I'd like new testament references for everything you've argued here. If it's not new testament it doesn't count. Jesus came to us as prophesied in fulfillment of the law freeing us from the laws of the Old Testament.

And also that Jewish guy really knows where his towel is.

And people say the EU is a bad thing.
That's awesome.

Imagine a society where young women actually grow up with no hangups about their bodies!

GW Bush declined to present the treaty for ratification stating that he felt that the "human rights based approach" was not appropriate.

That ladies and gentlemen, scares the shit outta me.

Yup, cannabis and cannabinol derivatives were downgraded to class C drugs  on january 29 2004. In theory is you were caught in possession and there were aggravating circumstances that convinced the CPS it was worth prosecuting you it's possible you could be obliged to spend two years as a guest of her Majesty.
Guidance from on high means that in general police won't look to prosecute for possession for it's own sake.

I've got a copy of the misuse of drugs act if you want a look.

As a side note it's interesting to know that prior to 1971 British narcotics control policy was very liberal. It was in fact possible to obtain small amounts of drugs on prescription in order to manage an addiction with a view to recovery. The MODA1971 was actually passed as a result of intense pressure from the United States.

just for flavour remember that posession of Cannabis in the UK will probably result in nothing more severe than confiscation and a caution as long as there is no indication of intent to supply. Unfortunately, you as the householder are in a potentially more precarious position because allowing this behaviour in your home carries a potential two year sentance.
In theory it is possible that your son could earn himself two years of detention too but generally the police do not pursue class c drug cases because they've got better things to do.

Of course this all is lovely but no one has brought up the single most salient point.
things have not taken a turn for the worse since prayer and brutality were removed from schools. Crime in fact has dropped to it's lowest levels amongst juveniles since records began.

1) Incarcerating someone without due process is evil.
2) Cognitively restructuring someone without their consent, or the above mentioned due process is evil.

The "teen help" industry cannot exist without doing the above ergo the teen help industry is evil.
Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

That UNICEF report was utter bunk.
it determined child welfare by entirely arbitrary measures  (such as proportion of children who have smoked pot)
seemingly randomly constructed standards and used totally out of date information. I don't think anything constructive is going to come out of that.

Now if you look at hard measures, such as proportion of children living in poverty, or proportion of the population incarcerated etc then America still qualifies as the worst place in the developed world world to be a child. Just don't take unicefs word for it.

No doubt.

There are also better places.

I think I just gotta find the right state IN the USA... heh.
Oz girl is rihgt, don't think europe is any better cos really, it's probably worse, prevention is not better than cure here, it's the other way round, it's all about 'lock them little bastards up' that's the mentality, we don't do therapy in the way you do infact it's almost impossible to get unless you have money to burn on a private therapist (and they are extortionate knowing the NHS won't provide) as a mum of a child who has been diagnosed for over a year with a disability, i stil cannot get therapy for him, they are just into chucking the pills down their throats and hoping they'll grow out of it, the other half of the country doesn't even believe the disability is real, try dealing with that! ( I am talking police, schools, GP's etc)

I think it is safe to say that our experience of the country is radically different.

While you are thinking about leaving Niles I'm going through the process of moving to America.
Now is not the time for good people to give up and leave.

There is this incredibly cheesy TV movie from ages ago called Ticket To Heaven. It's apparently based on a true story (for what that's worth)  and it's about a guy who gets caught up in a cult, and then his friends and family kidnap him, lock him in a room, and deprogram him with the help of a "professional" deprogrammer. I remember seeing the film and thinking "damn, the deprogramming stuff was just as bad as the cult stuff." But that's a movie. Have no idea if real shit like that happens. So I guess I have no point. (surprise.)

Whatever it is, I think ducks need to be involved somehow.

Deprogramming can be extremely brutal if it needs to be done fast. I knew a guy professionally who'd spent a long time as a "guest" of some of our Irish Republican friends. This guy could be described as "Hardened" and after some considerable time in their company they basically rewired him. It took two years of counselling and medication before we got the poor guy back.
