Title: Second Chance - Memphis
Post by: Anonymous on July 05, 2005, 01:09:00 AM
My daughter was in Second Chance in Memphis in 1999 and I would really like to hear from anyone who was there firsthand.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  It was a very damaging experience for her and had limited therapeutic value.  I felt that I had no other options at the time and feared for her life.

Thanks for your feedback.

Second Chance is on the Facility Watch List of the International Survivors Action Committee. They might know other survivors of Second Chance. Thanks for posting here, Second Chance is a program that copied Straight, Inc. People here know about the damage that the Straight form of "treatment" does to people.

Just a little trivia, when Scotty and Jean Cassidy still lived in St. Pete they had a neighbor that lived across the street that was a biker. His tag on front of his truck said Arrive Stoned.

We were there during 93-94 for 13 months.
Results were very good and sobriety was maintained  for about 5 yrs.

Were you in there, or was it your child?

Your child obviously was not terrorized enough in Second Chance, or you failed to maintain your part in the terrorization in the years after. Follow your child everywhere, across the country if you have to, and it doesn't matter if they are of the age of majority now. Assure your child that you can and will always maintain control. The good news is that your child could be heading into some rough times while they figure out what was done to them. This will make them weak and needy, so be sure to exploit this. Have you heard of the Baker Act? It is a way for you to have your child locked up again. I suggest you look into it.

I'm unclear if you were in SC or your child.  Does your teenager (or you, if that was the case) maintain sobriety due to his/her experience in SC or due to maturitiy and other factors?  Just wondering.

Long Dead topic...but I was there in 98-99. I've been looking for others that went there. Do you want to know the ironic part? I had done drugs maybe a dozen times before I was admitted, and probably did more when I got out because of all the emotional trauma. lol, Im a healthy 28 yr old adult now, but its one of the few events in my life that I still get REALLY REALLY worked up even thinking about. I can't talk to anyone about it though, because they never believe me, its sad.

Well, that look people give me when I talk about it to them is probably like the one you get. Lots of folks from the straightinc program are on Facebook and Yahoo Groups, if you ever want to talk about it and have people actually understand 100%. Sometimes just remembering things about the place we were in brings up overwhelming anxiety. Be careful out there...  :peace:

Interesting Tidbit.......True Story

Jean Cassidy, then former Straight exec staff working as a receptionist in a financial planning office while her husband Scotty was working as Straight exec staff, admitted that I,along with most of the "clients"(internees)at Straight, were not really addicts. This admission came as I explained that occasionally I drank but was clearly not addicted nor in denial.I left that conversation realizing my 16 months in Straight was a total lie.

Interesting to see how the memories just won't die, while some of us are starting to dye off; including Mrs. Cassidy.  I too was at SC in Memphis from 92-94 (exact dates are fuzzy after over 15 years).  While the beginning of the program was rough, over time I grew attached to quite a few people there.  It might have been in spite of what was taking place, but there's always been a bond; I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Looks like nobody really gets on here about SC, but I've been trying to get in touch with some of the people I was in with.

It's weird there's zero info about this place on the net.  It's like it never existed.  You would think with the number of people who passed through there it would be easier to find stuff.  Guess it's a part of most people's past they would rather just forget about.

Anyway I was there from 91-94.  I don't really won't to give my name on here but any replies would be appreciated.  I graduated and was put back in while on aftercare for another six months.  I went to school at ECS and worked at Central while there.  I was from Tupelo, MS so I lived with a host family with Sean T who became a counselor after graduation.  Don't know if that rings any bells.

I had pretty much forgotten this place but had some recent experiences that brought back a lot of memories from there.  Anyway,  if anyone knows a site that has more former Second Chancers involved let me know.
