The Seed Discussion Forum / Re: Cleveland, Ohio Seed
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:41:00 AM »
The Cleveland Seed definitely had minors, and a few parents went to Ft. Lauderdale when they closed to set up apartments for them.
I was at the Cleveland seed for a couple of months and participated in the move while on the program.

There is other info about it on the forum.

What i know of it is just what Barker told me individually, or to the group.  I did see the newspaper/magazine stories, complete with pictures - which lent credibility to the story.  Cannot recall what publications, but they may have been clippings - no banner

Claimed he went up north and was with Muskie on the back of a flatbed truck in the rain - pretty dismal picture - denying the specifics of the letter at a press conference in Maine - I think -  but New Hampshire would make more sense from a primary election perspective;  Might be some sort of photo or news item in a local paper, apparently didn't make the national feed.

It makes sense that Segretti would use Muskies appearance at the Seed as there was no media allowed in to record the proceedings - he was probably aware of that aspect of the visit;

Art did talk about doing damage control for Muskie (trip to Maine, etc. but he didn't rate the "enemies list" or anything like that - so any threats from Nixon to the seed are, in my opinion, just paranoia.

Other than this little ratfucking episode (thanks for reminding me of the term, was going nuts trying to remember it) I doubt Nixon even knew the place existed - the Ervin comission was, after all, a Democrat controlled institution.  The only reason they got any kind of federal attention is because they gave politicians  the  "anti-drug" seal of approval, and possibly some grants.

Ursus,

Segretti was impersonating a member of the seed - didn't mean to imply he was there, poor choice of words on my part.

Seems like he would be a fun guy to have a few beers with - some good stories anyway!

Segretti wrote it as part of a smear campaign against Muskie - Paul Morrison was simply the name he signed to it - Morrisons was supposedly involved and present when the "remarks" were made.  We can't know for sure if he was involved in the seed - Remember, Art wouldn't let anyone know who was there, so unless he was court ordered there would be no way to verify the existence of a Paul Morrison involved at the seed during the time in question.

But the fact is, Segretti wrote it as ppart of Nixons dirty tricks group

Don Segretti wrote the Canook letter.  He was part of the Comittee to re-elect the president (CREEP).  wrote it as a member of the Seed, can't verify if Art went to Maine or any of that, but that was the story.  Segretti took credit for the letter as part of the whole Watergate business.

Longshot,

We probably crossed paths, I moved to Ft. Lauderdale when the Cleveland Seed closed - usually went by my username;
Lived with some of the wrench line guys in Lakewood prior to relocating to Plantation / Pompano;

You can probably recognize several familiar folks here

We all did what we had to to get by - that is the interesting thing, everyone was so intimidated that they shifted into conformity to survive, when you got good enough at it you graduated;  Outside, when you don't have big brother around, most will confirm that they had same experience.

Look forward to hearing your tale.

For a while there he was always bringing home another pet - fish to ferrets, so now he has built up to horses!
Can't say I'm on a farm, but I am in GA (Atlanta area) - would like to get in touch if with anyone from that era that might be in the area
I always find it interesting to catch back up with people in a free environment, see what was really going on.

Is it the same marc G who lived in the hollywood "apartments" (two little houses next to each other owned by Hanks parents?) for a little while? His dad did something at the Diplomat hotel.
He was a hoot, then he disappeared, wondered what happened to him - knew better than to ask

I knew you at SR84; I lived at Cranbrook then.  Sorry to hear about your dad.  He probably thought he was doing good like so many of the other people who facilitated the seed - seemed like a nice enough guy.  Saw him for some ailment once - never made it to his house, but I think it was his Winnebago I worked on a couple of times.
He was kept far enough away from the dirt, like the cleveland lawyer was, so that they could keep them around and manage their perceptions  (I got in a world of shit for contacting the lawyer outside the "proper channels" so I imagine the same held for your dad).

The SR 84 location was bulldozed (quite a while ago) for 575 - after a lot of bluster about how it would never happen;
I understand they ended up someplace on Broward Blvd. prior to the final demise.

Yes I remember the Jingle bells stuff, Hokey pokey, greensleeves, etc. but not the other one you mentioned (john jacob jinglheimer schmidt);

Barker and the seed in general tried to remain pretty low profile in my day - the media was feared.

All of the licence plates, t-shirts, and any other promotional stuff went away during my first year or so;

Whenever there was any kind of story, they/we went into a high alert - all of the Jim Jones paralells (and denials thereof) would come out.
In house he was still worshipped and it was still under stood that he had mystical abilities bla bla bla

It has a lot to do with the context

Unlike many (maybe everyone) on this forum, I had already convinced myself that I was screwed up, so I didn't go in kicking and screaming about how I wasn't that bad - pretty much everyone looked like they had it more together.

Unlike most on the forum, I was not brought in under duress - it seemed like a good option - I came up with the "deadorinjail" line long before I showed up at the seed.

I was not a happy go lucky kid, life sucked big time;

I was the perfect candidate for cult membership.

I wasn't court ordered, My attorney recommended I go somewhere to get out of circulation for a while;

So let me get this straight. You've come to praise Barker,

I don't see how this gets misconstrued as praise , as I said - it must not be combative enough.

If all I wanted to do was lob insults or idle threats then I would have gotten that out of my system a long ago;
This has all been repeated ad infinitum over the life of this forum, so it no longer has any impact.

BTW:  As I said, I didn't spend a lot of time in the group after year one, so not many PBJs .

It is kind of a closed society when the only acceptable discourse concerns rehashing various platitudes (the seed sucks, barker sucks. etc.) and idle threats;

I attempted to discuss the latter day phenomena of people hanging out for several years, having done it myself, but was apparently not sufficiently combative.
