Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / "Us and Them"
« on: July 08, 2002, 06:36:00 AM »
I am fairly new to these forums.  I bounce between Straight Survivors and Straight Alumni and use different posting names, yet some of you smarter members will know who I am in either forum since I often post the same message in either one.  If this were a football game, I would have to say that this forum scores more touchdowns, but Straight Alumni definately has possession of the ball more than we do.  Maybe people are running out of steam or something.  I was fortunate enough to get together with three collegues from my days of incarceration at St. Pete Straight.  It was awkward at first, but after being with these guys and some other very dedicated people, I felt the years melt away from me and it was like I was 17 all over again.  My biggest and most lasting contribution to the St. Pete Straight was that I was the brightest and most dedicated jerk (mis-behavior) of my era.  In the weeks to come I resolve to bring the Jerk back to life and place him in the lives of the scum-bags who profitted from our misery and who stole from us what may well have been the best years of our lives.  This drug testing thing for high school students is criminally stupid.  I plan to protest and hope others do the same. As for the differences that occur in these forums, hey whadda want? In my program, crack was a part of your ass, MTV had not yet been invented, CD's were something old people put their money in at the bank, and cell phones were as big as hairdryers.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Closing Straight Inc

re: Program Closes

I seven stepped from the Morgan Yaght Building and we all went over to see the new straight on Gandy once the program had moved over there.  Most of us were not impressed.  The staff and Miller Newton made it clear that this was "his" Straight Inc now.  Helen Peterman and Dr. George Ross had a falling out with Newton and the way he was running things.  They started a program in Nakomis Florida south of Sarasota called LIFE and I believe a few kids were pulled from straight to resume treatment there.  I visited the program with a few Sarasota friends in '81 and it was small, clean, and they had plenty of fans to keep the place cool.  They also had a pretty good kitchen.  They also had a branch that opened up in Tallahassee that did not last very long.  A few people I knew went on staff there.  One guy got a staffer girl pregnant and then ran back home to his mama in St. Pete, the other guy got his staffer girlfriend pregnant and ended up marrying her.  All ended up messed up on drugs pretty bad when it was over, only now they had become "Predator Druggies," by using what they had learned in the program to their advantage.  As for what happened to LIFE after that, I guess someone from Sarasota/Naples would know cuz by that time I was working 12 hour shifts printing telephone books.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Wanda Minto
« on: June 30, 2002, 08:30:00 AM »
Wanda Minton..........hmmm.  I had a total instant flashback first time I saw the bus driver lady on South Park!  I actually had to be classmates with her, and ride back to straight everyday in her mother's car.  Executive Staff somehow put her into my Print Shop class as a student before I even started school.  I thought it would be pure hell, but Wanda was as dumb as a box of rocks when it came to Printing Presses, so I just walked around the shop like she was'nt even there.  I even made out with a Spanish chick in the darkroom on 4th phase and nothing ever happened.  I dunno, maybe she had a crush on me or some shit........

I was in the program at that time, and all I can say is that I saw Liz, Lori, Amy, and Terri chowing down on some store-bought cake in the staff office while I was across the way getting medication. The only one who did'nt eat any was Marie, cuz she did'nt feel right about it. That very well could have been your birthday cake, they did that stuff all the time.

not really x-mas...But I do remember my birthday(s)...I was admitted 2 wks before my 15th b-day.  In St. Pete, they'd dish out some sheet cake on someone's b-day...As sort of a parental gift in abstentia...

Anyways, I was banking on Mom sending me a slice of cake...Then, I'd have some sort of comfort knowing that she remembered my b-day and didn't dump me off in psycho-camp and went to Diz-world...See, she has an impeccable mind for numbers & dates and never forgot to do something on our b-days...(She's a mathmatician for cristsake!)

Long story short, my b-day came around and not a happy b-day or piece of shite cake! I "sat in my doo" and misbehaved...

Years later, my Mom told me that she wanted to order me such a cake, but got confronted in parent rap for being weak and enabling...She also said that she felt doubly-guilty...One, for leaving her lil' sweet pea all alone & scared on his b-day and two, for making a cardinal error in the eyes of the program...

I know this may seem very small to most who read this...However, at the time I just turned 15 and was locked up in drug rehab...Any sort of small respite from a loving Mother would have been welcomed in such bleak circumstances...

However, I look back on it now and kind of laugh at it all...So much effort went into those rediculous & petty power plays, mind games and manipulations, that alot of the altruistic intentions were lost to the few that controled the many...

To quote from a Woody Allen film..."Comedy=tragedy+time..." Straight to me was a tragedy at the time, yet I find myself laughing alot in order to deal with it...

Hi,

Does anyone know in St. Pete the Straight Bld was located, Not the one that was By Tyrone Square mall but before that, I went to all the  sites looking but non mention a address location. I know Mike said it was on Park Blvd. but does anyone remember how to get there? what is a cross street, and I would be comming from Tampa side accross the gandy bridge any directions would be appreciated.Even thought the bld. is not Straight Inc. anymore, but I wanted to drive by. and if these camps were so great to all the news media why were they always hidden away and the only ones that knew where they were were the ones stuck in them ???Hmmmm Thanks
I think that you are referring to the elusive Milton Roy Building.  It was on Park Street around the 4400 block.  It was near Boca Ciega Bay/Bayou and it's isolation insured very few sucessful attempts at split-ting from the program.  It was by far the largest Straight Building and at the time I was there the group topped off at 287 kids. The building was in use from around August of 1977 to August 1978 when it moved to the Morgan Yacht Building on Anvil Street by Tyrone Mall.
