Provo Canyon School also has a counselor phone home once a week and the student gets to talk on a monitored call - with counselor on the other phone - for about 10 minutes twice a month - maybe three. Visits are strickly discouraged the first month. Parents are all warned that their manipulative children will write and ask to come home and may even tell of FANTASTIC stories of abuse by staff. They are warned to not believe these manipulations by their children. This is done the first week.
There are no pay phones, no internet, the facility is locked, and the staff strickly controls all comunication - even non-verbal such as smiling. Those not towing the line are not allowed to see the light of day - often for months at a time. Immagine spending an entire summer indoors, it's truly worse than juvenile hall. These kids are victims of sexual assault, abuse and other mental illnesses. Most are not criminals.
