A Scanner Darkly--Philip K. Dick
« on: March 31, 2005, 09:15:00 PM »
This book has been made into a film set for release in September.  The movie has been directe by Richard Linklater, of Slacker and Waking Life fame, and is shot in the same style as waking life.

The plot revolves around the use of drugs and an addict who is either hallucinating that he is a narc or a narc that has become an addict.  Interesting takes on drug use, addiction, and drug treatment.  Philip K. Dick is one f the trippiest SF writers of the last century, and this one, written in 1977, is one of his finest works.

Yeah, I really liked that one by him. After a while it was like he was spying on himself, right?

Other ones by PKD that I loved were Radio-Free Albemuth, VALIS, (both part of that trilogy concerning divine influence on a politically corrupt earth) Ubik, and Man in the High Castle. I'll bet that I'm forgetting some other good ones too...like the book that Bladerunner was based on...that was another good one. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Also The World Jones Made, Martian Time-Slip,Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch.

Truly a great writer.  The movies "Total Recall", "Screamers", and "The Minority Report" are all LOOSELY based on short stories by Philip K. Dick.

Oh yeah--forgot to mention--Synanon  and "the Game" are referred to a few times in "A Scanner Darkly" (includes a confrontation scene during "the Game")

"I just" saw the movie tonight, it was a pretty damn good adaptation.  Even Keanu didn't bother me, Robert Downey Jr. was pretty damn good, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder were good too.  Who woulda thunk a bunch of druggies would have done well in a druggie movie?

The scramlbesuit technique is really cool, I hafd wondered how that would translate to film.
