ok, i am new sort of in the past week. i am a parent that made mistakes with my kids. i find myself with time and trying to understand why, what how.  bear with me a bit.  years ago, i heard about the elan school and it was connected to some bad press. now it seems pple are saying it is still open? is this true?

As far as I know, the elan school is still up and running, doing business as usual.

i am really shocked. i thought i heard they closed years ago. it was on a show on the history or disvoery channel.

I was in ELan years ago, before all the bad press. Although Elan is smaller than it once was when I was there, it is still open.
Despite all the nasty things you will read in this forum, most of it comes from angry, infantile people who have yet to find out how to grow up.
This of course, is not speaking of  the previous generation, who ligitimately has some beefs with ELan. I am only talking about the ones from like the late 80s and after....
This doesnt by any means say that time spent there was easy. It wasn't for many- including myself. It is a rough place to be, but if done correctly, even if you dont buy into the whole program, you have no choice but to learn a thing or two about yourself.

I think the best part of elan was the friendships. It is my fault I suppose but I didn't adress any issues there because I was afraid they would just be used to break me down in GM's and such. I stayed quiet, had a lot of contracts and didn't get booked once for ANYTHING the entire last year I was at elan.

Yeah, I learned a thing or two about myself at Elan and gained a conscience.  I learned how to be a good person, but I also learned a lot that was really flawed that I had to discard when I left.

Regarding the friendships thing, I only realized after I left how much I missed certain people.  Elan is structured in a way that prevents you from truly feeling close to many of your peers because you're too damn busy "holding them accountable."  But once I left, I missed a lot of people.  Still do, actually.

The two people I was really close to were Chris Silver and Jon Talbot.  I've talked to both and both are doing well.

Maren, not booked for anything in a year?  Damn, now THAT's a corrupt house!  I was a model kid and I couldn't get through 12 hours without being booked!  One time, I think I had 10 or so incidents -- mostly just for a variation of "being loud on the post."  Which I was.

shit yeah. You couldn't move without getting booked in my house. You could even get shot down for "woodworking" (ie going with the flow and not going out of your way to be aggressive and piss people off). I blew a home visit with that as the justification.

Well I was completely corrupt. I crossed people's LE's of the list all the time, let most kids do what they wanted, was always friendly, had the staff think I was an amazing coordinator, and I always did my job met deadlines and held up my responsibilities. My last year at Elan I was the highest position the entire time. The only Full coordinator in the house(no re-entry at the time) and All of my Coor trainees were new residents to me since my 2 day split added a year onto my stay. I let everyone know that if they wanted to be cool with me I would totally help them out, but if they wanted to fuck with me I would probably win. Wow I sound Like a massive bitch. I suppose I was one at elan.  I also never dropped more than 1 slip a week unless I was being followed up on for basics. I guess thats my rationalization for why I never got booked. HAHAHA.

i was in 80 / 83.... the elan i knew was  a nightmare,,run by twisted  junkies using extreme methods to keep to try to change  ones inner self,, the only reason they made it softer was by order of the state,,most of the same sadist still run the place,,,the elan of today is a  childrens boarding  school by comparison.no offense to the poor souls that still had to go through it. :silly:

Love the pics. You are a very good-looking woman. Hey, you did what you could to get by, nothing wrong with that. I did the same thing asa full Coor, Sr. Coor and Re-entry. I would take care of anyone that didn't suck as long as they were right by me. It was fun and a challenge to get people things they need, get them out of trouble they didn't deserve and be corrupt, but I think it was being corrupt in a good way. By the way, did i mention how good looking you are?
