Spring Ridge Academy - Any feedback?
« on: March 01, 2005, 06:47:00 PM »
The Spring Ridge Academy has been recommended to me by several people for a teen-ager girl with drug/alcohol problems, manipulative, no coping skills, ranaway, totally lost and confused...
Any feedback/suggestions for me?  Thanks

There is a poster here who's been there... I hope she'll see your post and reply.

Spring Ridge Academy is listed as an abusive treatment center on the HEAL watchlist (http://www.heal-online.org/childtortureusa.htm).

"Spring Ridge Academy is located in Spring Valley, AZ uses virtually the same language and systems of seminars as Resource Realizations and the TASKS model of behavior modification.  According to their application form they require parents to turn over all guardianship rights over to the school while the child is in the school.  They require a commitment of at least 15 months.  They ask parents to sign away the right to sue for any reason other than gross negligence, which they cannot legally require parents to do in the event they break the law, prove to be fraudulent and abusive, as we believe they are.  They also block communication to the outside world allowing only letters to and from parents all coming and going through staff so that no child can report their abuse to their parents without being punished.  They block phone privileges during the first month(s) of stay.  All of these are red flags according to the warning list at http://www.heal-online.org/warn.htm.  Please do not send your child to this program.  Rescue them if they are there now!  If you were abused at Spring Ridge Academy please contact us and we will post your online testimonial here as a warning to others."

It doesn't sound good...

This website, http://http://pub.hs.state.az.us/datasvcs/als2/als_bh/detail/m_detail.cfm?facid_in=20010389 doesn't list what Spring Ridge Academy did to be charged a $750 fine, but it does give a phone number to call if you would like more information. I personally haven't called, but I would recommend it if you are serious about your inquiry.

Also, Spring Ridge Academy was one of several programs praised back in 1998 by Linda Shaffer from Woodbury Reports for using "The Marathon Workshop".

Those schools who Do Use these workshops are: Cascade School, Whitmore, CA; Mount Bachelor Academy, Prineville, OR; Swift River Academy, Cummington, MA; Hidden Lake Academy, Dahlonega, GA; Crater Lake School, Sprague River, OR; CEDU Schools, CA and ID; Spring Ridge Academy, Spring Valley, AZ Cross Creek Manor, LaVerkin, UT; Paradise Cove, Apia, W. Samoa; Tranquility Bay, Mandeville, Jamaica; Spring Creek Lodge, Thompson Falls, MT; Copper Canyon Academy, Camp Verde, AZ And for the over 18 year old students ? Northstar, Bend, OR and Benchmark, Redding, CA

Not really the best group of programs to be lumped in with in my opinion. I am also sure you could get a better description of the marathon process than even this article gives if you either search or ask on these forums, especially the Straight forums from what my wife tells me.

Just a quick mention of something I didn't want anyone to miss from Linda Shaffer's article because it isn't mentioned until almost the last paragraph....

Where did these workshops come from? From creative minds. They came from often controversial influences and beginnings ? Synanon, Lifespring, est, ? out of the ?60?s ? and from many of the earliest creative innovators in the mental health field.

I went to SRA for 15 months 97'-99'. I would not recommend sending your daughter there. I will grant you that everyone has a different experience and not all were bad. Things have changed since I was there like they now have 64 girls they was only 46 when I was there and there was 5 phases now there is only four.

The program expects perfection which is really hard and very stressful. They have a high staff turnover, I had three different therapists while I was there. They have "seminars" or as we called them trainings which a lot of people will tell you are not good experiences. I my opinion it is a form of brainwashing.

I was diagnosed with depression for most of my life but it was after going to SRA was I diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder because I started cutting on myself and pulling out my hair while I was there.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.
