Remember that film?
Where can I get a copy of it?Maybe it was a "Made For TV" film?
Where is Robbie Benson today?
Was he publicly affiliated with any church.

In the movie,Ritchie was a "druggie",he even had a special hidden room in the crawl space behind his closet with a dsco ball and strobe lights where he could smoke pot.One day he was flipping out and his father confronted him with a loaded pistol,Ritchie said "GO ON THEN,SHOOT ME",so he got his face shot off and that was the end of the film.
Was this film supposed to be based on a true story?

Yes, the death of Ritchie was unfortunate, indeed.  It is quite understandable why his father shot him.  What else was he supposed to do?  He wasn't working the Steps, so actually, his father was showing him compassion by killing him---that way, he did not have to suffer the agony of teen drug use.

My father watched that movie and made my life a living hell. He assumed I must be like ritchie and searched my room etc. listened in on my calls, trashed my Hendrix albums etc. I hated that movie. Also the movie, "Sara T. Portrait of a teenage alcoholic" starring Linda Blair. Same bunch of crap designed to scare uninformed parents.
