THIS IS OFF-TOPIC -- I APOLOGIZE BUT I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT  -- concerns myself and other people who post their email addresses on public message boards

Hi folks,

I have not posted in a while, but some of you may have been recipients of lewd or obscene email which seemed to originate from my email address (which was my name in full@hotmail.com).  These messages did not come from me.  I would never send such messages.  I spoke with one internet company about it and they said it was a virus that did it.  I am not going to post my name here because I am embarrased by the whole thing.  Please assume that if you got an obscene email from someone whose name you know in the context of this message board, it was not from that person but rather a virus attack.  If you saw such an email and blocked my name, that is the best thing to do.  I changed my email address, although the old one is still active for the record while I wait for Hotmail to respond to me.

P.S.  Has anyone else had experience with this type of thing?  Do you have any other recommendations for me other than contacting Hotmail?  I found another lewd email in my inbox today that was "returned" to me, but which I never sent in the first place.

Don't worry, this happens ALL the time! I sure wish I could change my email addresses. I get roughly 500 unsolicited emails every day, some of them bearing malicious code. But my addresses have been used for business for the past 7 years or more, so I'd lose valuable contacts if I changed them.

The best defense against these types of virus (or, actually, worm) attacks is to install a good virus scanner. PC-Cillin from Trend Microsystems does a good job for me and it's only around $30/yr.

My husband and I just had this conversation.

"Mike why are you sending porn through your computer?" said I, patiently awaiting an answer (with sissors in hand :smile: ).

"What do you mean", he replied with great cocern."I do not have any idea of what you are talking about".

He was off the hook once I got to the friendly computer fixer man......

there is a way to stop it without opening those unwanted emails, just click on "block sender" and you shouldn't have them anymore. I've gotten a few that I didn't want and didn't open, I also blocked a few out and it seemed to work for me.
As far as virus attatchments, I haven't had a problem with that yet, but my computer is also very well protected against that kind of thing too.
