elan is a private school located in Poland Springs, Maine. They have special education and therapy for kids who have been in trouble and/or out of control.
Students must have an average I.Q., even though they offer SpED. They have a website of their own if you care to know more.
You will mostly get cynical answers here.

Who the hell are you to say anything about what we say on this sight? I have no personal issue with you except, you never went to Elan. Whether people want to vent negativley or positivly this is a great site for anyone wanting to know about Elan because it consists of mostly Elan Alum. There is a reason it is mostly cynical. I have always had feelings on both sides of the fence, but just because you sent your son to Elan does not mean you know the first thing about the place. My parents were held in the dark and knew nothing of what Elan was really about, so please, keep your uneducated opinions to yourself. There was good and bad things about Elan, but sending someone to their website is just plan ignorant. Do you really think this many people can be wrong. Yes, there are some positive things about Elan, things I will keep with me forever, but both sides of all issues should always be explored, and if the truth of some of the bad things bothers you or you want to hid your head in the sand you should go elsewhere. Let the truth be told by those who went through it, no parent has a clue to what happens behnd closed doors.

I happen to be a person that is honest and I like to help other people when I am able to.  Someone asked a question and I tried to give an honest, informed answer. Who the hell are YOU, to call me ignorant?  You don't even know me. Was I dishonest when I said "mostly cynical" on this site? I thought by giving the web site, someone could look it up on and form their own opinion between this site and elan's. I don't think you need to experience something to understand it, as long as you have done research and spoke to many former students, as I have.
Did I say elan is great? NO!
I have a very clear understanding about that place. It is ignorant of YOU to judge ME!
By the way, my son is in his room right now, with a friend over, and going to work in the morning.
On the other hand, I could be visiting his grave.
I think I am entitled to give an opinion. Yes, an educated one too!

No, you do not have a clear understanding of the place, and you sound stupid saying you do. And yes, you have to experience Elan to understand it, it is foolish to think otherwise. You have no idea of the language Elan, you have no clue of what the groups were like, how staff acted good and bad to students, you have no clue what it is like to stand in front of three houses and get a GM, you have no idea what it is like to be in a ring, you don't know what it is like to be woken up at 2am and asked to go break up a riot going on in another house as a student while chairs are being broken over staffs backs and students being stabbed. Woman, you are clueless. I would like to see you scrub the same spot on the floor for 12 hours because you were 15 and flirted with someone from the opposite sex.

I am glad your son is doing well. Elan has saved lives, I can attest to that. What you call cynical also is the truth though.

And here is your answer to who I am.

I was in Elan for 22 months. I went through the program with flying colors, was an excellent student, was a Coor or Re-entry for most of my stay. I played basketball on the first team they ever had. I went back to speak to the students three times. I also have a degree in Psych, have worked in three programs for troubled teens and am working on my masters. I have a son of my own now also. I have also run some of the largest nightclubs in Boston and feel I ave pretty damn good people skills.

IN my view Elan is a interesting concept that was carried out like shit until Tania Merette started changing the system a bit. Over time the place got better, but I still do not agree with everything that goes on. I saw some things that make it hard to sleep at times. There were some excellent staff members that really gave back. There were also some horrible ones. In a place like Elan there is so much room for error it is scary. The place does work for some, but it can also be a very scary place for others. This forum was built to let the alum vent. Regardless of what changes have been made, or what staff has been changed there are still a lot of scary memories for people. I would like to see you thrown into that world for two years. Besides the isolation and loneliness you are thrown into a world that is impossible to understand untill you have been there for a long time.

You have no right to say you are educated or have a clue of what it is like to be in Elan. You only can say you are a parent of an Elan alum. My parents hate the place because of the lies and and things they were left in the dark about. They respect and appreciate some staff, but overall do not approve of how it was run. My mother had a P.H.D. in psych and now is a college prof so I think she may have a proper opinion on the subject. As for you, you are wrong, you do need to experience something like Elan to understand it, so I have every right to judge you for making uneducated comments on a place you really don't know. After you have had a three house, then come talk to me. [ This Message was edited by: JNAILZ on 2004-10-21 20:01 ]

I will gladly explain who Llahsram is.

She is a lonely female Hermit that lives in an old run down in need of repairs home that she shares with hundreds of stray cats and other wildlife she can mustard up.

She also lives for arguments and that is why she call's this site home. I can just imagine the responses Llahsram will make regarding my post.

I am not trying to knock you cindy, or be a jerk. It is just very hard for me to swallow your post. I am sure you are a nice enough woman who means well. I also can sympathize with the heartache you have gone through with your son. I am not trying to attack your character or you personally, It just infuriates me to no end when someone who has never been through Elan claims to know about the place. I am willing to bet your son has yet to attend college, and I can tell you it has a lot to do with the lack of education Elan gives. The so called school was the biggest joke ever, and does not prepare you for real schooling. I apologize if I said anything that would be rude to you, that is not my purpose, I think ever Alum will agree that unless you have been through Elan, parent or not, it is impossible to comprehend. The pain many went through scars, and I hope your son did not. I think you have ever right to part of this forum, I think it is great when parents are involved and want to learn more, if anyone wants to be immature and take shots at you ignore them, I am sure they wil just be Anons anyway.

You are correct in saying I cannot fully understand what it is like to be in elan, although I have had it explained to me by several people, including my son.
Fortunatly, the elan today, is not the elan of previous years. The kids are not even allowed to touch another person. There are still GM's,scrubbing floors and toilets.
The swearing and screaming are out of control. I heard a "group" while we were outside and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I also watched a GM one day while I was there. It was pretty sick and it upset me.
If I had pulled him out after learning this, what would I have done with him? I got him alone, and he assured me he was not being abused in any way. Sometimes in life we are left with very few options. I felt like I had none left. Looking back, I didn't. There was no where else that could have helped.
When I sent my son there, I had no idea about the way the school was run. I sort of learned as time went by.
My son wasn't attending school. He would show up a couple days a week and do no schoolwork anyway. elan was one of two schools in the northeast that will take a kid that threatens to run away, as he did when I suggested a wilderness program. I knew another regular high school would be the same response. I was left with few options. He needed to get an education.
He HATED being there. Who wouldn't? The good thing is, now that it is behind him, he is so happy to have diploma.
All this started because someone asked "What is elan", and I gave an honest answer. Everyone here IS cynical about the place, and became insulted because I said that. For some reason it was taken as a personal attack in which it was not intended to be. Only a comment. I'm sorry if I hit a nerve.
