I have always been interested in Straight slang and traditions. It's totally cool to read ex-straightlings from other programs use the same lingo we did. It's like we were in there together. So my question is:

Do people from other programs recognize the bizarre words: Pooh, Pooh Bang, Cu, or Cugga Mugga

These were words that we would actually say to each while in group or being walked to the toilet. They were also accompanied by hand signals. Offically it was considered "talking out" and was discouraged, but somehow was not illegal like actually talking.

Glossary:

Pooh-yes (hand signal was an ok sign)
Pooh Bang-exuberant agreement
Cu-no (fold your four fingers toward the plam and pronate the wrist)
Cugga Mugga-strong disagreement

If people from other areas are familiar with these terms, that is so fucked-up! Please let me know.

I remember the hand signals....but no words.  If we said ANYTHING it was talking out and grounds for an entire rip rap featuring you as the special guest.

I still sometimes catch myself doing the "no" signal alot.  People just look at me funny.

Clicking (sp) was defined by making the hands into two fists and rubbing the knuckles against each other in an up and down motion.  And then there was the endless finger flicking to get someones attention.

"Get out of your head " was another one....fingers all pointing towards the front of your head and then pulled away with a popping sound.

The only real sound that came close to a word was "pssst"....used to get someones attention, usually accompanied by frantic finger flicking.  If you got a "psst" it was important.

Also, all the upper phasers who answered our raised hands would ask if it was a DIRE EMERGENCY before they let you talk.  It was hilarious to watch some of the people headgame out trying to decide if they were being honest or not about the DIRE EMERGENCY.

Since I refused to chicken flap my arms, I also wanted no part of "groupspeak". Seeing people make these veiled attempts to communicate was so damn silly. The misbehavers did this much more effectively with words (who'd have thought), eye and body gestures and the occasional grunt from the floor.(ie. "start some shit so I can get taken off the floor while they fuck with you")

The ability to recognize hand/eye signals and exaggerated body movements, etc. are valuable skills. Looking back, even then I could nearly sense when it was time to pop and drop (phasers in that case). Funny how many phasers avoided direct eye contact.? Sheeple. It's fun to laugh about the "kissyfur" mannerisms that so many kids entertained. Next up: Straight emoticons. Jason

We had a get out of your head thing too. I almost forgot. Thanks for the reminder.

You face your fist palm side up in someone's face and then open the fist fast. To imply that some  awakening magic was coming forth from your opening fist. People wanting to be spiteful would do it very close to your face. Annoying.
