Drug Free America Foundation Executive Director Available for Interviews on Supreme Court Medical Marijuana Case

11/26/2004 7:00:00 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National and Assignment Desks

Contact: Lana Beck of the Drug Free America Foundation, 727-828-0211

News Advisory:

On Monday, Nov. 29, at 9 a.m., the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Ashcroft vs. Raich. At issue is whether California's "medical marijuana" law -- adopted by referendum -- is preempted by federal statutes and, therefore, invalid.

Calvina Fay, executive director of the Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF), will be present when the case is heard. Fay -- who has more than 20 years experience in the drug policy and prevention field -- will be available for interviews after the hearing. Ms. Fay will be standing at the bottom of the steps leading to the Supreme Court, near the fountain. Other drug policy and prevention experts will also be available for interview. These experts include:

-- David Evans, director of Drug Free Schools Coalition

-- Robert DuPont, founding director of National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and president of the Institute for Behavior and Health

-- Sharon Smith, president of MOMSTELL

-- Joyce Nalepka, president of Drug Free Kids: America's Challenge

-- Don Feder, media advisor, International Task Force on Strategic Drug Policy

The Drug Free America Foundation is unalterably opposed to what it calls medical fraud marijuana. DFAF supports federal preemption here. Fay: "We cannot allow individual states to undermine federal anti-drug laws. Medical questions should be decided by the FDA -- in consultation with the medical profession -- not by pro-drug activists preying on public ignorance."

Drug Free America Foundation is dedicated to fighting drug use and addiction, as well as supporting law enforcement efforts. DFAF promotes sound drug policies and abstinence-based treatment and prevention. It is equally committed to exposing and refuting the lies of drug legalizers and their deceptive tactics.

According to Fay, "Crude marijuana isn't medicine, and promoting addiction isn't compassionate."

To contact Fay or another DFAF spokesman, call Director of Communications, Lana Beck, at 727-828-0211 (after business hours: 727-403-7571) or e-mail http://www.dfaf.org
