Online Parent Support Groups
« on: June 15, 2004, 09:52:00 PM »
Having spent quite some time monitoring online support groups for program parents, I find it quite disturbing that these groups and their moderators do not allow (read tolerate) opinions that (A) do not mirror their own and (B) are critical of their program-of-choice.

Advocates and activists should be swarming all over these support groups forcing these program parents to look at the other side of the coin.

May not change their minds (these are after all, parents who have some serious control issues) but it will have an impact on parents who have not yet signed on the dotted line committing their child into one of these programs from hell.

Moderators who suck up to program parents by censoring and/or discouraging fair-and-balanced discussion are particularly loathesome.

While Fornits has long been the home of TRUTH behind closed doors, I think the time is ripe to take the truth "on the road" so to speak.

Besides Struggling Teens, there are numerous other parent-support groups which can be found on some of the larger program recruiting websites.

Drop in and state your opinion or share your experience.  If you can't get past first base, write to the moderator and challenge his/her closed door policy. Ask them what they have to gain by suppressing free speech.  You might be surprised at the response you get.

Here is a typical example of how heavily parents rely upon the *advice* of other parents (and the proverbial educational consultant) when trying to decide whether to send a child away.  In this case, the mother really should have sought an independent opinion from a mental health professional.  The girl is 15 and adopted.

d'oh.  What they gain from censoring would be cash and validation.
