"Straight" the movie
« on: May 08, 2004, 12:10:00 AM »
i went to this place called 2nd chance and we had to watch this called straight all the time.  The movie was old probably late 70's early 80's but i'm not sure.  Anyway i wondered if anybody knew where i could find it cause i want to show it to my friends instead of having to tell the story.

Marijuana clearly has medicinal value.
Thousands of seriously ill Americans have
been able to determine that for themselves,
albeit illegally. Like my own family, these
individuals did not wish to break the law but
 they had no choice.

--Lyn Nofziger, former deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee

The movie starred George Segal as the father, and would you believe it?  Vivica Davis, a Helen Hunt lookalike played the little druggie girl!!!  No twister or Paul Riser to come save her ass though, the movie was simply abysmal.  If you are a glutton for punishment, or simply weird, I checked Amazon.com and they actually have 5 copies for sale at this very moment.

Almost forgot, Stockard Channing played the wailing wimpering mother.  Many of you would remember her as "Rizzo" the bad ass juvenile delinquent bitch in the movie Grease.

One of the most mind-bogling moments of the movie is when they let George and Stockard into a "rap" and the kids start flapping their arms like drug crazed "Se-gulls" and he asks increduosly just what the hell it is they are doing.  The pretty young staffer bitch then explains 'motivating' to him as he stands there all slack jawed.  It was one of the funniest moments of the movie.  This happened right before they put the girl in the program I think.  It is rather strange that the movie came out at a time when Straight was facing it's harshest criticism.

There was a movie about teen drug use that starred Helen Hunt.  I remember clearly, as it was before I started using.

Throughout the movie, Helen is a "good girl" that doesn't use drugs.  And at the very end of the movie, she is sitting in class, on the 2nd floor and looks out this huge window and jumps out of it.  Once she's on the ground, she takes pieces of the broken window and starts sawing away at her wrists.  I believe in the movie, she had been using cocaine, and that's what is supposed to have made her crazy, trying to jump to her death.

I remember seeing it after Straight.  :flame: There I was sitting in my parent's living room - and Nancy Reagan came on television and introduced Miller Newton's book. It was a double-whammy, especially since it was only about a year after Fred's trial.

And I believe this is the period that Wes' book refers to when he quotes one of Reagan's drug czars as saying that thousands of telephone calls came into the White House looking for information about the Straight program.

You know, that is one thing that I did notice.  I heard lots of people talk about "bad LSD trips".  And I did acid a lot, one time eating 7 hits, and I never had a "bad trip".  I was always just going with the flow.

The worst experience I ever had on drugs was one night when I was tripping on acid, I snorted a couple lines of coke.  It was the first time that I ever did coke, and I just really didn't like the way that it made me feel.  I felt super aggressive and felt like I had a lot of built up energy.

So, I made myself puke, knowing that it wouldn't get the coke out of my system, but it made me feel better.  I think the whole thought of my body evacuating, tricked my subconsious into thinking that I was getting rid of the drug.

Then I waited a few hours and took a hit of x to get my mellowness back.

Reefer Madness!

And they're screaming like it's a horror movie because they're "mad" from smoking pot. I remember that one too!

That was made in the fifties, wasn't it?

And how about the "Days of Wine and Roses."
Remember that one? It was about alcoholism and Jack Lemmon starred in it.
