June 1991-
A recent study by Joy Dryfoos supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York spells out the magnitude of this problem. "Seven million youngsters---one in four adolescents---have only limited potential to become productive adults because they are at high risk of encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities." Four major problem areas were studied: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. Her report concluded that at least three million youth are prey to all four high risk patterns. In addition, seven million are at "moderate risk because of light substance abuse and early, unprotected sexual intercourse."

These excerpts from this mother's speech is a core reason for the Western Youth Network's existence. Providing assistance to families and professionals is a complex and ever-changing process. The Western Youth Network's vision is to be able to provide the appropriate program for every youth who is in need.

An aside: Read more on Joy Dufass, I mean Dryfoos here. Don't miss her Safe Passage Act.  :scared: Joy Dryfoos? express goal in Safe Passages is to not only inform people about successful efforts "that help at risk youth emerge from their childhoods as responsible adults", but Dryfoos seeks to get her readers involved in these efforts. Dryfoos calls for a "Safe Passage Movement" that involves all levels of society in a concerted effort to help youth at risk become successful adults.

Western Youth Network Expansion
By Larry Stednitz
The Western Youth Network was developed three years ago for the purpose of assisting mental health professionals and parents to accurately assess their children and adolescents needs and to help locate the appropriate educational and/or treatment program. Capistrano by the Sea Hospital's Corporate Counsel, Ed Simmons and I, conceptualized this program over a cup of coffee in Prescott, Arizona. In this remote setting away from the busy activity of the Hospital, we had an opportune time for reflection and "seeing" that the treatment of adolescents necessitated a geographic expansion throughout the Western United States in order to locate the best treatment at the right price. It has been a gratifying three years, with calls coming from throughout the country. The need is great as indicated by the doubling of referrals in the past six months. Our expansion includes my relocating to Helena, Montana. From Helena, I will continue to develop the network of treatment programs. At CAPO, Helen Condas and her team of clinicians and educational consultants will continue to assist parents in their search for appropriate care. All of us in the Network appreciate the support of Capistrano by the Sea Hospital, and in particular Hal Day, CEO. We look forward to fulfilling our vision of helping all children and adolescents in getting the help they need.

Reflections From Montana L. Stednitz, Ph.D., Director   Western Youth Network  (800) 328-1877
It has been two months or so since I relocated to Montana. Aside from missing my good friends at Capistrano by The Sea Hospital, the move has been a ?coming home? for me. In short, I love it! The beauty, vastness and fine people make for pleasant days and restful nights.
Having greater opportunity to be in direct contact with programs in the West has allowed me the luxury of closer first hand experience at distinguishing levels of quality and determining more clearly the specific differences in programs.

-A Better Way Youth Academy, Western Samoa. Known sometimes as Robert Louis Stevenson Youth Academy or Mole Ole Ava, this program was founded a few years ago by Sterling Deveraux, a former therapist at Heritage Center and at the Western Youth Network (now part of Youth Services International). Although this program has been praised by many parents, last February it was rocked by a sex scandal when a male staff member admitted being sexually involved with a female student. Other students later complained of sexual advances by staff members as well. The owners now plan to turn it into an all-male program.

September 1999
Aspen Youth Alternatives has substantially reduced recidivism among juvenile offenders in Montana with its eight-week wilderness program, followed by an eight-week residential program, according to a study by Brigham Young University.
"It became real clear to us that the key to the program was aftercare," said Larry Stednitz, who directs the Montana program. "Kids all come out of the wilderness with a great attitude, but then they regress. We use the two months of residential to reinforce what they learned in the outdoors, and to ease their transition back into society."

Why hasn't ISAC started an investigation on ed consultants, independent referral services and the fake support groups?  Sure would help to keep parents on their toes when it comes to buying into the WE HELP FAMILIES HEAL sales and marketing pitch all these outfits are promoting in one way or another.
