I have been emailing. There will be a piece about it on the blog 1000 places You don't want to be as a teenager later this month. The blog is run by another organization but we have some contacts over there willing to share what they got.

I got some links to these two statements, which is easy to Google:

The first statement can be found on Greatschools.com
Quote
Parents please make sure your child qualifies for this facility. It has been my experience that behavioral problems ADD, ADHD, ODD, …are not suitable for La Amistad. Our child picked up horrendous habits while going there and was interacting and manipulated by kids much older. As a parent who will do anything for my child I am extremely disappointed with the care we received. I need help for my child and the time spent at La Amistad has made it much worse.

The second is from the Facebook group "I survived La Amistad"
Quote
…and treatment by those councelours and therapists was so fake. The only way we ever got out of there is because we helped eachother. It’s either that, or certain people turned 18 and checked themselves out. Haha

It seems that they are one of those facilities which can cure everything according to their marketing. It cannot be done.

None-ya,

Have you seen this?

http://www.heal-online.org/lame.htm

I went to google Rodney Letterman's name and it popped right up on google. I'll do a bit more googling and poke around facebook for you as well. Hope your friend is doing ok. Rough business all around I'm guessing.

I'd say stay strong but that sounds way too AA like.

Get strong, then kill!

That's the reddit way.

Damn, I bet the group oscar is talking about is a hidden private one. I looked for 20 minutes and couldn't find anything on it.

Prolly for the better given how persistent programs are about infiltrating facebook groups.

It's a long and complicated story. My friend (after being Baker acted) is covered by family insurance that will only pay for La Amistad because of location. I'm not comfortable discussing details. But I said I would find out what I can (which hasn't been much). That might not be the right name for the fb group. Can't find anything but their own website. Where's Ursus when you need the bear?

Can be longer if voluntary.

Hmmm... yeah that doesn't sound comforting at all. I wonder what sort of pressure is going to be put on him to stay? A full bed is a paying bed after all. Who is set on him going to La Amistad? Him? Family?

This was more or less an intervention by the family. This is not a case of drug abuse. It's mental illness. This has been on going. From a therapeutic boarding school, countless doctors, counselors, and friends. I'm not a fan of this place from what little I've been able to find so far. From what I gather Grandpa's insurance will pay for this place. Coming back home isn't an option at this point.

Hmmm... not sure what to say... can you find out if he'll be able to speak to you when he's in there? If so, call him daily, try to make sure the program knows he has people outside who care.

you might try www.mindfreedom.org

They specialize in dealing with mental health facilities like this one if I'm not mistaken. In fact, I'd have your friend give them a call along with the Disabilities Rights people in Florida. Have him ask both of them to advocate for him by keeping Amistad on notice that screwing with him isn't going to go unchallenged.
