Here's the message I got. The last statement is curious. Sounds like membership is limited to companies and academics. Was there a discussion about the THI there?
Barbelith's membership policy is currently under review
Barbelth is yet again experiencing problems with membership. Because of these problems, we can no longer allow people to simply join the board through a registration procedure until better mechanisms are in place for dealing with situations like this.
So how do you join? At the moment, if you want to become a member of barbelith you have to either 1) get someone on the board who you know already to recommend you (they'll have to send 'Tom Coates' a private message asking for you to be added) or 2) e-mail tom [at] barbelith [dot] com asking to join the board.
Unfortunately, for a whole variety of reasons, if you want to join you'll almost certainly also have to demonstrate that you are who you say you are. This probably means that you will not be given entry to the board if you use any free webmail account like hotmail or yahoo mail... Only e-mail addresses that can be directly associated with a person at a company or academic institution will be considered.
