What Programs Teach About Homosexuality
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:22:00 PM »
Did anyone go to a program that claimed to "treat" homosexuality?  HLA used to perform this "degayification treatment" back in the day.

Here's a pretty typical take on what programs teach about homosexuality (warning: stunning ignorance and homophobia to follow):

Quote from: "Whooter"
Back in the 1960's the word Gay was a slur. They were not accepted at all and were referred to as fruit cakes or as a birth defect of some type. They would marry woman and have kids because that was what was accepted of men in those days. They started having sex with each other in San Fransisco which caused the Aids Virus which proved that homosexuality was unnatural and needed to be treated like a disease.

This obvious bigot shares the same reasoning as many programs, but goes even further, suggesting gays having sex with eachother in San Francisco created the AIDS virus and proved being gay is a "disease" and "unnatural."  Obviously this man is no scientist and his homophobic views are routinely taught in programs.

Please share your thoughts on this interesting topic.

Anyone who is old enough will remember this to be how most people viewed gays back in the 1960's and 1970's.  I agree these views were based in ignorance and many people were just afraid of gay people back then.  It wasnt until the gay movement educated people that they became more accepted in society.

I believe many hate crimes and prejudice are fueled by ignorance.  Once people are educated these view abate.

Well I hope you're working on "unlearning" those hateful and bigoted views you have about gays.  Frankly, they're disgusting and shameful.

No, DJ, those were the views of the people in the 1960's. 1970's etc.  If you look at how the movement has evolved you will see that gays are accepted into main stream society for the most part.  Why does talking about this bother you so much?

I know a few kids in the past few years (since 2007) who were sent to "pray away the gay" camps.  I do not know the outcome. I begged the parents not to do it. I know one place was Love in Action. Another one of my kids was sent to Fundie TBS because he had sex with his long term gf more than once. He wasn't even a "playa."

Oh and CEDU... for all their love of "dirt" - would not touch homosexuality with a ten foot pole. In fact, the staff would redirect any conversation or rap that veered toward homosexuality. This was 20 years ago though.

It has come a long way since the 1960's.  gays can get married and share assets now, adopt children.  I think from a legal standpoint they have gained more ground than on the social front.  People still dont accept them across the board in the work place.  There are still many prejudices to overcome even now in 2010.

I am ashamed to say my cousin did this with his son about 12 years ago. What a stigma he placed directly on his sons back. Not only did this young man already feel different but then being sent away to a Catholic Religious camp or whatever you called it, did not help him at all. He cried every day he was there until our grandmother stepped in and said if they did not take him out of there she was. Go Gramma. (I so loved that woman, way ahead of her time, another Elenore Roosevelt)
They picked him up the following day.
This all happened because his older brother (my age-51) was gay and died of aids back in the early 80's. His brother was very flamboyant as were many back then in and around the Boston, P-town area, he was a bit promiscuous and possibly died from having unprotected sex. Does this mean only gay people were subjected to this, hell no, hetero's were just as susceptible to aids if having sex was done unprotected.
I tried to tell him that his son had no choice in the matter of his sexual preference, like I had no choice in mine. I am heterosexual and know I did not choose this.
I remember growing up with my cousin (his older brother), he was a big guy 6'4" about 225lbs., good looking (could have had any girl he wanted, they were throwing themselves at him) and had a great personality. I asked him all the questions a guy would asked another guy about being gay ( our houses were practically on top of one another), he said basically that it was really no different then I when I was first developing my desires for women, he was desiring men and it went on from there. This man never dated or had sex with a women, I know this. Yet even though he lived his "life" truthfully, the weight of being rejected by the people he loved most became the juggernaut that killed him. His anger he turned against himself.
I know about anger turned against one self.
Thank god our family (grandma)finally got through my cousins (younger brother) head, that he needed to accept his son as god intended him to be. There is nothing wrong with my cousins son and there never was, being gay is not a disease or a handi-cap it is just another human being, "being" human.

It would be interesting to see how many programs/schools still try to address the gay issue with teenagers.  I would assume at this point that most parents are educated enough to know that being gay is normal and is integrated into the childs make-up.  I do know that christian orthodox and a few other religions still maintain that this is an anomaly that can be corrected, so I guess there still would be a market for it out there, but the market should be shrinking quickly by now since there is so much information available on the subject.

I hear ya Semus, I was too young to know what caused what in the 1960's.   I was saying that is what people believed back then.  If you spoke to an adult that is something you were likely to hear.  I remember hearing that myself when I was young.

If you compare what they thought then to what they think now you can see how far the gay rights movement has come.

AIDS cases did not reach widespread public awareness 'till the early 1980s, when you were already in your 20s, Whooter (according to other of your posts).

Most of the early AIDS cases prior to 1981, when the disease was formally recognized as an epidemic by medical professionals, were not fully autopsied 'till later via preserved tissue samples.

Yes, I believe it was the mid 80's when they started closing down the bath houses in San Fransisco.

From the mid-1980s onward there was lobbying against gay bathhouses blaming them for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), in particular HIV, and this forced their closure in some jurisdictions (see Legal issues, below).  Sociologist Stephen O. Murray, writes that, "there was never any evidence presented that going to bathhouses was a risk-factor for contracting AIDS.

So we, as a society, have come a long way in 25 years.  It would be interesting to know if there are any programs left which view homosexuality as something treatable.

Really?  Cuz that's sure not what it looks like.....

Up there you talk about how "they" were not accepted and "they" would marry woman (sic) and then below......

Quote
They started having sex with each other in San Fransisco which caused the Aids Virus which proved that homosexuality was unnatural and needed to be treated like a disease.

That doesn't say "people thought that.......".  It says "they started having sex with each other in SF which caused the Aids Virus".

If that's truly not how you feel, fine.  But the way you posted it sure reads that way.

I was thinking earlier about Whooter's extreme and uneducated views about gays, such as the one seamus rightly pointed out above, and I started thinking about other people like Whooter who say one thing for public consumption, but when their real views become exposed in one way or another, we see who they truly are.  In this case, while logged in Whooter has tried to present mild views on gays, but when he was posting anon or as one of his other identities here, he was very extreme and anti-gay at times but also expressed homosexual ideations, depending on which fake personality he was using at the time.  Now, when all of his posts were linked together, we were presented with the bigger picture of Whooter and his latent gay tendencies along with his harsh anti-gay rhetoric.  And you know what it reminds me of?  It reminds me of Rapture Righty politicians and public figures who promote harsh, anti-gay agendas and policies while simultaneously engaging in homosexual behavior out of the public view.  Whooter is very much like Sen. Larry Craig and Pastor Ted Haggard, both of whom were staunchly anti-gay in public, but were doing meth with male hookers and toe-tapping in airport men's rooms when they thought they were out of the public eye.  People like Whooter are not only dishonest to others, they are dishonest to themselves when they try to hide the fact that they have strong gay feelings.  Sadly this is the case for many "homophobes" like Whooter, Larry Craig and Ted Haggard.
