Hello, Nicole.  I saw that you mentioned in another thread about helping to shut down STRAIGHT in SoCal.  In my few years of frequenting these boards, I have yet to see anyone that comes to mind from STRAIGHT Southern California.  I have legal documentation regarding the closure of that STRAIGHT and questions regarding the KIDS of Southern California facility that occupied the building prior to STRAIGHT.  I was wondering if when you have a minute, if you could shoot me an email at webmaster@kidsofelpaso.com
Thanks!

Hi Wes,

No problem I will be happy to give you all the info re So CAl...I will email you....I think a lot of So CAl were transfered to Dallas when the Yorba Linda facility was shut down...In addition, I think all of So CAl Straight kids were and still are BRAINWASHED...I remember after I got out of Straight I ran into another "client" in the mall. I was only 17yo and obviously very angry...I told her, "I'm shutting Straight down...Its a concentration camp...and now the state agrees with me." She told me that Straight SAVED HER LIFE and that she could never betray them...She could never do what I was doing!  She spent over a year there and was very much enmeshed with their "LIP SERVICE."

I'd love to talk to you more Nicole, I'm sure we know a lot of the same people like Jim Henderson and Leynord Hayes, etc. I'm so glad you got that place shut down, you're a hero.

HI Guys,

Sorry I did not e-mail sooner I had a death in the family....

Do you know Bill Brown from the Yorba Linda Straight? He was the one responsible for convincing my mother to admit me.  His mother worked for my mother and suddenly he felt compelled to admit every troubled teen to the program.....Evil Asshole!!! Very PRO STRAIGHT! He was 20 plus when he entered the prog.

Anyway I will tell you what happened in June of 1990.  My mother tricked me like most parents did. I had no history of drugs and did ok in school.  I was admitted and Straight knew I did not have a drug prob but they took me anyway. I told them over and over that I had never even smoked POT...But I was suddenly a whore and a druggie....

The second or third night I was there I was in a host home in Riverside. I woke up around 4AM then tried to open the window. Four girls were crammed in the room. The alarm went off and I was in a panic. I accidently fell through the plate glass window and fell on my face on the concrete. I ran and hid plus went to a gas station.  I tried to call my former therapist before staight however, the host home father found me and took me back.  My arm was slashed open and I had broken my nose, glass came out of my eye. They did take me to the ER and I was stitched up.  My mother came down and sent me back.... the host home father refused to leave the room. Anyway to make a long story short I had to go back and was called a druggie, looser, junckie, whore etc...

They refused to give me medical attention and made me stay up till 3 or 4am lecturing me.  A few days later I passed out and was having probs breathing.  They finally took me back to the ER.  I remember being unconscious and finally waking up....No straight people were in the ER room.  I told the nurse what was going on and begged her to call my therapist.  She did and he came down in the middle of the night and had the Orange County PET team (Psychiatic Eval Team) to place me on a 5150.  Subsequently, I was taken to a Psyc hospital in Santa Ana... It was there child abuse reports were filed and the CAl state licensing board came to interview me.  I found out that Straight filed for a license in Jan 1990 and was under investigation.  The board was very suspicious due to the prior Kids prog that was forced to shut down.  After my testimony the board refused the license and ordered them to shut down.  My testimony was the final straw!

Straight cont to operate despite the state orders..It was all over the Orange County Register...I heard the PD had to run them out of the building....It was then they took all the clients to Dallas.  I remember the article entitled "Transfer worries state officials."

The social worker from the CA licensing board said to me that Straight violated several major laws.....
It is illegal to take kids completely out of school.
Also it is illegal to place kids in an unlicensed "host Home" they have to be licensed throught the state. Straight ignored this.
It is illegal to have adults and minors in the same prog.
It is illegal to have kids in a prog restrain other kids...
All the above plus others led the state of CA to find Straight to be unprofessional and subjects its minor clinets to cruel and unusual punishment!

After I went to college a few attoneys contacted me for more info...I could never personally sue them because they left the state.

Let me know if I can offer more info....

Sorry to hear of the passing in your family.

I guess my questions were more geared towards wondering if you knew anyone from the KIDS program that were transitioned into STRAIGHT once KIDS closed down in Yorba Linda.  Most KIDS of Southern California were formerly in KIDS of El Paso before being flown out west.  I'll check my email and get back to you soon if you have already responded.
Thanks in advance for any information.

I may remember Bill.  If he was a great deal older, kinda short and muscular, then I remember him. Was Dan Brown still there when you were there? He probably graduated before you came in but he was my host brother for 6 months and killed himself soon after he graduated. I also remember that Scott Ogle's father protested the closure of Straight from one of Wes's newspaper clippings. I'm sorry you had to experience Straight but so glad that you helped close it down.
~John
P.S. Other names that I remember are Sean Woods and Lenoard Hayes, who are mostly likely Megalomaniacs to this very day.

Nicole,

I dont know if you had seen my earlier post to you, however, I was in Dallas when all of the So Cal kids came over.  Our group was already way over crowded, and when they came, it sort of sent the program over the edge in the way of putting it on track to shut down there as well. There were just too many kids, not enough host homes, and our rules and ways of doing the program were so different, even though it was so similar.  It created an EXTREMELY volitile atmosphere.  Staff was cracking down hard on everyone, trying to prlong everyones program, I assume because they were hurting for money.  More than half our group was on 1st phase, and I would give a conservative estimate of about 250 kids in the program at that time.

I ran from the program about 2 months after the So Cal kids came, I think Dallas finially shut down not too long after.  Our left over clients were sent off to Atlanta and Orlando.  All the fifth phasers were graduated so I heard, no matter how far along on 5th they were.

Anyway, I honestly believe that those kids being sent over to Dallas was the best thing, because it really started the process of getting Dallas to go under.  There were entire DAYS spent restraining kids trying to run.  I think that was something that confidentiality just couldnt hide anymore.

Hi Wes,  :???:

I don't know a whole lot about the Kids prog. It was only there 2 days and Straight had a birthday honoring their one year anniversary.  I remember a few parents getting up and stating they were greatful that Straight took over Kids other wise their "children would be lost." I remember one sister (acting as a staff member) of a client telling me she was involved with the Kids prog.

You may want to get info out of the Orange County Register 1990 Feb? I think...I remember the article talking about the Kids prog...The article made reference stating, "Kids closed due to abuse allegations....Officials worry that the New Straight inc prog is the same DOG DIFFERENT LEASH." I used to have the article and lost it in one of my numerous moves.

I hope this is helpful...I will try to locate that article off the web...

Be Well,
Nicole

I was the one wondering if you or any others know if any former KIDS of Southern California teens that were enrolled in STRAIGHT of Southern California or later transitioned to STRAIGHT Dallas.  I will check into the article that you mentioned and all additional information from anyone on the subject is equally appreciated.

I do believe that Wes would like an email from you if you haven't emailed him already.  His addy is at http://www.thestraights.com

Hi Glider,

Sorry I have been out of the loop...my older sister recently passed away and I have been busy with family stuff....

Anyways, yes that sounds like Bill Brown....short, muscular, older....He was the one who recommended to my mother that I go to Straight....I think I blew his mind by graduating from college, grad school and now a practicing therapist....I think he thought I would end up on skid row or something....I remember him telling me "Straight is the only way to save your LIFE." Well they lied... I LIVED! Like I said on a previous post....He's an EVIL ASSHOLE....

That Henderson guy sounds familiar....Was he the head staff? I think he's the one that called me a druggie, addict, whore after I returned from the AWOL in front of the group....Also I remember Scott Olge's father and his pro concentration camp protest for Straight...He was in the Orange County Register in front of the state licence building and the register did extensive interviews with him...

Are you from So Cal? I sorry that you had to go to Dallas....How did Straight present the transfer to your parents?

Be Well,
Nicole
