Here's what CCI - Canine Companions for Independence does:
Takes an 8 week old puppy and gives it to a "puppy raiser" for one and a half years.
Encourages the innocent puppy to bond with the raiser
The puppy does bond closely with this person over a 15 month period
The raiser gives the now full grown dog back to CCI for advanced training
The dog has no idea what has happened.
Dog does not see beloved raiser for 6 - 9 months of the advanced training...then only for 2 hours at the end of that time.
Dog is "matched" with brand new person who is handicapped
Dog is "in service" until too old or handicapped person dies.
"It's a dog's life."
