Dear Mr. Peterson:

We have received your correspondence and have enclosed information on how to file a complaint regarding a Joint Commission accredited organization.

If the organization is accredited by the Joint Commission and the complaint is related to quality of care or any other Joint Commission standard, you may forward a letter (one to two pages) identifying the name and address of the organization and a brief description of the issue to the Joint Commission, Attn: Office of Quality Monitoring, One Renaissance Blvd, Oakbrook Terrace, IL, 60181 or fax (630) 792-5636.  You may also obtain complaint-filing information through our website at http://www.jointcommission.org (we strongly encourage you to go to our website and then go to "Report a Complaint" and then "Update your Complaint" by using this incident number above). We do not accept verbal complaints.

The Joint Commission evaluates complaints and media issues it receives from the public about accredited organizations in order to determine whether, in the accreditation context, a complaint or media issue raises any credible suggestion of failure by an organization to comply with Joint Commission standards.

Per our Public Information Policy, the following information is provided upon request as it becomes available:

    * The number of standards-related written complaints filed against an accredited organization that have met criteria for review
    * The applicable standards areas involved in a specific complaint review
    * The standards areas in which requirements for improvement were issued as a result of complaint evaluation activities
    * When an unannounced or unscheduled survey is based on information derived from a complaint or public sources, the standards areas related to the complaint
    * Any determination that the complaint is not related to Joint Commission standards

The Joint Commission does not address individual billing issues, payment/finan c ial disputes, nor do we perform individual c ase review. Also, we do not have jurisdi c tion in labor relations issues or the individual c lini c al management of a patient. We are unable to evaluate issues greater than three years old. The Joint Commission does not review c omplaints of any kind in una c c redited organizations. The Joint Commission also does not a c c redit individual physi c ians.  

In addition, you may also wish to refer to the organization's Quality Report, whi c h is available at the Joint Commission's web site (http://www.j c aho.org, and c li c k Quality Che c k), to obtain general information about the organization's performan c e on key quality measures. If they determine that the complaint has nothing to do with Joint Commission standards, I guess they just don't deal with it. I.e., they have no teeth.

4is CALO liscesened by the state of MIssouri as a residential treatment center?
