That summer I noticed her change in appearance, her attitude and the friends she was hanging with.  Not good, and very scary.  I tried to get her to recognize what these kids were (trouble) but she claimed I was a snob.  Then she pleaded to go to public school.  I finally conceded and that was the beginning of what was going to be a very big turning point in our lives.
•   Since she had never been to public school, this in itself was culture shock.  We live in a very affluent area, where the schools are rated very highly, however even affluent areas are not prejudice to bad things.  Ashlyn started hanging out with less than desirable peers, sneaking out of the house, not doing any schoolwork, etc.  After 2 months I withdrew her and placed her back in her prep school.  She would go back to being very defiant with the smallest matters.  I.E. Shirts are to be tucked in, belt is to be worn, ID badges always in sight, etc. She would constantly defy all of their rules, ended up in detention on many occasions.
•   Even in the prep school, Ashlyn was trying to fit in with girls and boys that were trouble. I placed her in therapy, which was a joke to her.  She thought she was normal and I was nuts.  Her destructive behavior just escalated out of control.  I didn’t know what to do.  I felt so alone and so lost.  I understood she wasn’t the worse teen out there, but it wasn’t my angel that I raised. 
•   I contacted a local gym that Ashlyn started at 8 years old, and asked them if Ashlyn could have a job working with the younger kids and coach gymnastics. They agreed.  Ashlyn was a different person in the gym and decided to start working out again.  All the parents loved her, her team girls loved her, and the owners of the gym were happy to have her. But, then influences from the outside came in.  Although Ashlyn should have been growing with self-esteem, she was actually falling deeper into a very destructive path.  She told me she didn’t like working with the kids at the gym anymore, and wanted a job at McDonalds!  I refused to let her do this, and eventually the owners of the gym told me her attitude was changing and some very undesirable friends were dropping into the gym as Ashlyn was working.  Now Ashlyn lost that job, as she planned it.  She was free to hang.
•   Now she takes it a step further and starts practicing Witchcraft!  She was casting spells on me, and actually spilled hot water on me.  She would dress sometimes gothic and other times like a whore, the make up was disgusting as the attitude was worse.  That is the best way to describe it. 
(I always said she lived in a glass house, and suddenly it shattered. Now what? She moved back home (she was living with a family for training, flying home on the weekends), and begged to "try" public schools. Our neighborhood is rated fairly high and they claimed to have a good school district. However, my child had never been in a public school setting. She started in 8th grade, and like for many of you reading this, it was the beginning of the end.
After two months of public school, the change was visible. My innocent baby girl had turned into someone I didn't know. It was frightening and scary and I didn't know what to do. I don't blame the public school, it was my daughter: she was a good girl making not good choices. I immediately put her back into a private school, however she would come home to "hang" with the less than desirable peers. Now what do I do?
We rode a roller coaster, with everyday a new adventure. I would keep hoping and praying things would get better. Just when I thought I saw improvement, an axe would fall. It was like walking on eggshells. Thank God she didn't do drugs, however she did like to drink wine coolers. She was totally defiant, with no respect for rules or authority. She continually received referrals at school and started sneaking out. The make-up and clothes were disgusting, her faith in God disappeared and I was left with a daughter I didn't know.
On one of our better days, she told me she was going back to the gym to start working out. I looked up and thanked God; this "teen thing" is finally over. Well, within two weeks she was coaching gymnastics at a local gym she had started at many years ago, and her girls loved her. I was so happy, yet it was very short lived. Within two months, she came home to tell me she was quitting and wanted to work at the Burger Place down the road! She wanted to "hang" with the boys. I was destroyed and again, my hopes and prayers were crushed.)


•   I had found out she was sneaking out of her bedroom window to join her Witchcraft friends.  I have no idea what they were doing.  Once we got into a fight in the car, and she jumped out and ran off.  It took me 3 days to find her. I was so scared.  When she finally came home, she was so bitchy and very controlling of her own life.  This was not the daughter I raised.
•   Continuous behavior escalating out of control by the summer of 2000.  I needed intervention.  But where?  Therapy was not working; my mother tried talking to her, and nothing.  She was determined to be less than what we raised her to be. She hated school and threatened to drop out the minute she turned 16 (legal age in Florida).  It was always something.
