Well that just goes to show you that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

This is a tree that tends to bear rotten fruit. IMHO, Hyde is a cult, encourages cult-mindsets, and attracts people who are into cults.
I'm not saying that everyone who ends up there is of that ilk; lots of parents and kids get duped by the moral-laden rhetoric. But... generally speaking, in order to do well there, you do tend to drink the koolaid.

The Kool-ade is cider from that rotten fruit.

A HAPA INVESTMENT
WITH HYDE RETURNS
WE'RE CHALLENGING
OUR FELLOW
HAPAS!
We've been Challenged
Introducing The $35,000 HAPA Challenge
2008-09 Annual Fund
» Hyde Schools is seeking $1.4 million in unrestricted giving to the 2008-09 Annual Fund. This is a $283,368 increase over last year. The Annual Fund helps support student financial aid, the Family Education program and helps keep Hyde accessible to a broad cross-section of families that benefit from our unique family-based character education program.
» Recognizing the need for increased giving from HAPA membership to meet this assertive goal, two couples—Debbie & Joe Werner (Jason Werner ‘06 Woodstock) and Jacki Hinton & Dave Boone (Aaron Hinton ’98 Bath) will match the gifts of all alumni parents who:
* Increase their giving to the Annual Fund over their last gift
* Give at the same level as their last gift
» All Class of 2008 HAPAs will have their gifts matched, regardless of the size of the gift. We welcome you as first-time HAPA donors.
» Alumni Parents whose decrease their gift size over their previous gift are not eligible for the match.
» The Challenge is capped at the first $35,000 in participation.
» The HAPA Challenge concludes on June 30, 2009.

Ursus:
There is a new HAPA "Chairperson" this year. Lee Mortenson and Carol Kirkland are still offering their Relationship Workshops to enable HAPA members, current parents and other Hyde alumni "a way to continue the Hyde process and go deeper," but they are no longer Chairpersons. (This may very well be a rotating job, for all I know.)
Here is a somewhat recent message from the current Chairman, Dan Sullivan. Do I read that first sentence correctly?
We are still facing the challenge of how to transform HAPA into an active, meaningful organization for parents after they graduate from Hyde.[/list]

Notes from the HAPA Chairperson…Dan Sullivan
We are still facing the challenge of how to transform HAPA into an active, meaningful organization for parents after they graduate from Hyde. We recognize that different people want different things from HAPA. We made some initial efforts last year, some of which were successful, and some – not so much. Rob Buckla and Lavoe Davis are providing leadership from Hyde and we are adding new Board members to bring fresh ideas and energy to our efforts.
A small group met in Atlanta recently to redefine the long-term goals for HAPA in light of last years' experience.
Long-Term Goals:
* Develop HAPA into a national organization that is volunteer-driven.
* Support the boarding schools in their admissions effort. During these challenging economic times the schools need our help in recruiting students and families.
* Support the boarding and charter schools in their needs in the Family Education Departments. Alumni parents bring a wealth of wisdom to this area of the family's experience.
* Provide a service to HAPA membership with focus on things people don't get elsewhere.
These goals set an ambitious path for HAPA. For the remainder of the year we have identified several initiatives consistent with these goals:
* Admissions/recruitment efforts: Perhaps no initiative is more important than developing new approaches to bringing students to the board schools. Rich Truluck, Executive Director of Admissions, writes, "The boarding schools admissions team is developing a territory initiative in key demographic areas. Each area has been assigned a senior staff member; this leader will be the connector for the area. We will be concentrating on creating networks in each area (including alumni, parents and HAPA members) and cultivating relationships with them. Each territory will have an event to promote Hyde Admissions to prospective families and professionals. The goal is to create a network of centers of influence that will refer families to Hyde. We need to increase our contacts within each area and will count of the HAPA community for their continued volunteer support and expertise. HAPA is key to this strategy?"
* HAPA Regions: New emphasis and energy is being put into developing dynamic HAPA regions across the country.
* Provide HAPA facilitators and FLCs, Family Weekends, Senior Parent Retreats, Regional Retreats and other events: HAPAs have been coming back to Hyde informally for many years to facilitate seminars. This assistance is vital given the many demands on faculty and staff. We hope to start a program in which different HAPA regions agree to facilitate a particular retreat, which has the added benefit to allowing HAPAs to spend time with people they grew close to while their students were at Hyde.
* Offer distinctively Hyde social activities: We want to offer opportunities for HAPAs who want to remain involved with Hyde, but who are not interested in seminar-type programs. Look for announcements in the near future about special events for HAPAs that we feel sure many will enjoy.
* Offer personal growth-oriented programs for HAPA members: These programs can include events held previously such as couples workshops, women's retreats, and outdoor activities. We are on the look-out for new ideas that will give HAPA members opportunities to continue on the journey of personal growth that began at Hyde.
* Create new TAP-A-HAPA opportunities: TAP-A-HAPA is designed for alumni parents to bring their special talents back to Hyde. On a large scale, there is the Songwriters' Workshop headed by Don Cook and Michael McDonald held in Bath every year which includes students from the Bath and Woodstock campuses. Many other HAPAs have come back to campus to share special skills or knowledge. We welcome ideas from HAPAs and we will provide support as much as possible.
* Bolster the staff for HAPA: The leadership at Hyde is identifying individuals who can provide dedicated time to HAPA activities. We are fortunate to have Lavoe Davis, Executive Director of Development, and Rob Buckla, Vice-President of Development and External Relations, devoting time to HAPA efforts.
