Block user feature?
« on: September 15, 2007, 10:53:38 AM »
Is there any way Fornits could provide a block user feature - so that a user's postings could be blocked from ones screen display?

I have long known better than to click on links without foreknowledge of its content.

I can avoid topics that I know are bound to be of the sort I'd rather not read.

But I do resent ( very much) being ambushed on a topic of interest with grotesque images. I think it would be much valued by many (not just myself) if such a feature were available, so we wouldn't have to subject ourselves to this kind of assault while trying to read a thread of interest.

Or, maybe you could do something like the Xolah board does. Not delete these off topic and disturbing things (if your so dead set against it) but move them to "the basement" which you could label the riff-raff room; or the shit-hole; or the wayward home for fucked up buggers - something like that.

To be fair, it was my bad for not checking it.  I fell for a very well-timed troll.  But.....you know Who took things over the top.

It really didn't matter, his bringing my daughter into it.  We're both big girls and have shot down much better men than he.

Hmm.. so you'd have all of these posts thrown in there, and the thread left behind and potentially full of holes..so i see it like you'd either have to arbitrarily move the entire thread to the basement or move nothing at all... i dunno..

(In re: to the other thing), in mozilla i can at least block anyways annoying avatars and/or signature content..

I'd like a bit of instruction on how to block annoying avatars - that too, is at times a problem.

As to the basement solution - it doesn't seem to hurt the flow of the threads. You'd have to label the posts you move - but that should be easy enough: porn and sadism; or, genitals; what ever. . .

Sometimes, on the board I speak of, they do move the whole thread, when it is mostly trolling crap. Everybody on that board knows if they cross a line, the post will end up in the basement. Its fair enough I think. Its still there - people can still respond  - but its in the basement. It is just a suggestion. I do think something needs to be done. I hate not having any kind of solution to the problem of off topic and grotesque images.

If it were up to me - that shit would vanish, never to be seen again, and the poster of it banished. I thought the basement solution might be more tolerable to Ginger's non-moderated sensibilities. It is a kind of moderating - but maybe not to the point she couldn't live with it.

Besides being un-happy with having been subjected to sights I'd really never want to see - How can I (or anyone) suggest some poor programmed parent take a look at Fornits for the other side of the story; knowing they would run across this extremely offensive stuff? It makes the board useless.

On the other hand, if we could say - look - check out fornits if you want to see some thoughtful debate on these issues - but be warned - stay out of the basement - that might work.

How would you go about banning someone?  You can ban their IP, but they can always use a proxy.

I'd say it's worth a try...if for no other reason than to see how far people could 'push the envelope' before having their thread banished to the basement... I imagine it could get pretty exciting after a while...lol.. I like it! I vote try it for a week or two, but only as an experiment...lmao.

Yeah - that thought did occur to me. But seriously folks - don't you agree that some of the images are Way across a line?

As for banning - speaking hypothetically - b/c I know no such thing will ever occur here - Guess I'd stay pretty busy banning IPs for awhile. It must have some effect, b/c other boards manage to control rampant and offensive trolling that way.

But back to my original thought - is it possible to have a block user feature?  So, individuals could have some control over what they are subjected to - with out having to abandon the board all together?

I thought we had this settled.  I copped to my bad with jumping  the gun on the thread.  You copped to bringing her in where it was totally unconnected with the conversation.

Remember that earlier?  I made a mistake in jumping the gun.  You went too far in bringing my daughter into that particular discussion.  If you'd like to discuss anything about my daughter that I have posted about, which is the only context that I have discussed yours in, I'd be happy to.

I made a mistake.  You took a cheap shot.
