CEREBELLUM STROKE
« on: May 24, 2007, 09:55:50 AM »
Did You Know?

75 -85% of strokes occur in people over the age of 65 although a stroke can occur at any age.

In younger age groups men are more likely to have a stroke than women.

Usually a paralysed leg will recover before the arm and the arm will recover before the hand.

Stroke is the third largest cause of death after heart disease and cancer and the greatest cause of disability in the UK.

10,000 people in the UK each year under the age of 55 suffer a stroke, that's nearly 200 per week!

Cerebellar stroke survivors are in the minority as most strokes are of the Cerebral variety.

Stroke victims who had a stroke due to a blood clot are usually prescribed Aspirin which they may have to take for the rest of their lives.

Smoking and high blood pressure (hypertension) are significant risk factors for vascular disease so STOP if not for your own sake, then for the sake of others.

Passive smoking increases the likelihood of having a stroke.

Stroke victims may suffer from depression, however, this can usually be treated by antidepressant drugs.

Difficulty in swallowing food or liquid (Dysphagia) is quite common among stroke victims.

The majority of strokes (about 80%) are caused by blockage of an artery, the other 20% are caused by bleeding (haemorrhage) into the brain
