NE NATSAP Marketing to Canada
« on: March 25, 2007, 01:09:36 AM »
Hey gang,
During our meeting in Kennebunkport we talked about doing some marketing in Canada, specifically the Toronto area.  One of my tasks was to contact Janyce Lastman an EC in Toronto and ask her advice. Well, below is her response and I think we may want to consider her proposal. Let me know what you think and if we should invite her to our meeting on Thursday or some other time next week. Thanks!!
Audrey

Subject: Marketing to Canadians?

Hi Audrey.
Yes, I think it may be worthwhile and yes, I may have suggestions about organizing and maximizing a directed visit to professionals etc.  If you'll be at IECA Miami, we will of course connect for a few moments informally and chat.

Actually, I spun this same topic off into an IECA presentation called
"Marketing to Canadians" but it unfortunately it got cancelled when IECA backed out of Toronto during the SARSaphobia panic in 2003.  I also provide professional consults on the topic with programs such as yours who want proper information or advice.

I also ran an annual education fair (called SchoolsExpo) through the early-mid 90's which might have been a very suitable venue, but that was in my previous life.  CEDU schools attended at the time as did some other US special ed and prep boarding programs - as I recall, CEDU did VERY well out of it. North Country School, Gow and Landmark (?) also got interest, but the standard prep boarding schools were pretty much ignored (likely as we have those here too and much better priced in Cdn $ !)

FYI - there is only one reputable major education show left called Our Kids Go to School, Toronto and Vancouver www.ourkids.net . It's on in TO this coming Saturday (Oct.28th) but is not really the right crowd (lots of young parents with baby buggies, etc.)  They do get a few wannabee prep school parents of middle schoolers who may file the info away for down the road - but I suspect it wouldn't pay off much at first.  There are other routes I'd go before this one.  Also FYI - I understand Dublin School will attend this year, so you can see what they think...

To do more formal planning, we could block off 1 - 2 hrs (include your colleagues also at IECA?) and secure a quiet meeting area.  My rate is US $175/hr and hey, you'd save the travel expenses!  Let me know shortly though as I have other "bits and pieces" to take care of during the conference time as well.
Hope this helps to start,

JLL

> Hello Janyce,
> How are you?  We recently had a Northeast Regional NATSAP >conference and during that conference we had a marketing >meeting in which we began to develop a Northeast Marketing >cooperative.  One of the ideas we came up with while >brainstorming was to maybe send a delegation of programs to >Toronto to visit consultants, therapists, schools, etc.  We all >realize that Canada has limited options for their troubled kids and >would really like to spread the word about our programs.  I was >asked to contact you and ask your feedback and thoughts on this. >Do you think it would be worth it for us to do this?
> And if so, would you have some suggestions of where and who to >see? I really appreciate your time and input.

Yes, Audrey!  We should, for sure, invite her and plan a formal marketing consult with her!  Thanks!

Thanks Paul and Jeremy,
I think that's enough of us to go ahead and have her come to the meeting. Hey, Jeremy- do you think we could have our meeting in the room we are using for the reception? I know they may have to set up around us, but it would be nice to have our own space, especially if Janyce comes. Let me know...but I'll call Janyce now and see if she can make it at 2:30 poolside for now.
Thanks!

I know Janyce Lastman quite well; it has got to be going on 10 years now.  She is a wealth of information and I feel the $175 will be money well spent (especially divided up amongst all of us).  I agree that Canada holds its own unique marketing opportunity and we should utilize her knowledge in this regard.

I am not getting in until 11--what are the chances of leaving them at the front desk?

I can probably meet you Nicole...we should be right there in the bar
probably (of course). Also just to be clear, the regular meeting is at 2:30 and the meeting with Janyce Lastman is at 1:15 on Thursday.
I'll try to find you or give you a call...I also agree that leaving a bunch at the desk may work for those that can't be there.
See you tomorrow!
