Lost Friends to the SEED

You know Greg, I had hardly any problems in the Seed except the outside world. I still am severely more reclused because of the military. I lost my brother to straight. I got put in a level #5 military psychiactric prison and believe me Haladol, 30 milograms a day is not a recreational drug. Especially without side effect pills. So i was a pretzel and still scared shitless of the VA. I'm more withdrawn and introverted than I was in the Seed. I just don't know why my Seed"friends" didn't understand. This was back in the 70's.I've still ghost pains all in my brain from the drug Haladol. Thanx to these "friends and their brainwashed misunderstanding I did not have a friend at all and still am a ward of the government. Excemption program got me a pension for my disclosure to te Seed, and they gave me a classified operation to work with overseas, I worked hard for Uncle Sam. None of my "pals" from the Seed even were serious about me and had all gone back to dope and booze. I don't even know why I exist anymore. I'm not even allowed to talk about it. I guess I'll always be a loner, But still I think most of my VA friends are dead too. Long hard truck, but thank you for moderating.

I graduated Lakewood in 75 also.  I was in the Seed for over a year before my parents had to threaten to pull me out if I didn't get an "honorable discharge".  I still remember the night I got off my program.  The whole room was silent with disgust... the staff members and hundreds of guys and chicks.  Hmm.  I always found it fucked up that if you were actually honest, you failed and were openly hated by The Seed and everyone in it.  On the other hand, if you lied, everyone thought you were wonderful.

That aside, fear not.  The brainwashing goes away and your friends are still out there and are still your friends.  Do some Internet searches for them and see what you find.  Register on this site so they can find you.  I promise you, they are okay now and want to hear from you.

Hey Rich, good to hear from you.

Give me a call when you get in town or near town.

I did not go to the seed but a lot of my friends did.  I graduated from Lakewood in 1977 and I remember how hard it was when my friends came out and would not even acknowledge me.  Later, a friend told me it was because they were always being watched.  One of my good friends used to sneek smiles at us "druggies" and came back into my group as soon as he graduted.  Later died in a motorcycle accident.  Another "seedling I knew I believed died of an overdose at the  age of about 23.  I was somewhat of a druggie in high school but was able to find a straight life after highschool.  I wish luck to you all.  I wonder if Kathy went to Lakewood and does her last name start with A.

Thanks for logging on. I am sure we must know each other. If you would like to speak in private, email me at [email protected].

Many seedlings from lakewood it seems met untimely deaths. Are you speaking of Chris (motorcycle accident) and David L (overdose)?  If not, I sure would like to know who you are speaking of.

Welcome again!

Greg:  Yes I do believe we probably knew each other.  Your name is familiar,  but it has been a long time.  So sorry about David and Chris.  They were good people. I had lost touch with them by the time they passed away.  Reading these posts kind of helps me to understand what you all went through and understand a little better why the "seedlings" acted as they did back then.  Funny that I was such a druggie but i am so protective of my kids.  Remember that your parents did what they thought was right.  Hindsight is 20-20. My kids go to private school.I am a chicken,  so far so good.Do you have any idea what happened to Kathy Altvater or her brother Donnie.  I always felt she was so strong and would end up with a great life. Anyway thanks for answering my post.

You know, I haven't heard from either one of them since I was 16 or so. I remember Kathy Joined the swim team and was developing an identity away from the Seed, Donnie was really into his dirt bike and was a funny goofy guy, I liked him.

I heard some news about them from a friend in St Pete about two years ago and forgot. I am sorry.

Thanks again for logging on, but I am curious..How did you find this site?

BTW, somewhere in this forum is a story about me leaving St Pete when I caught wind my father was trying to throw me back in the program. It was David L and I that took off and went to Illinois, and of course you know he is dead now. Him and I were good friends and his brother and I are in touch once in a while.

I was never in the Seed but I lost friends to it.  I grew up in Lakewood Estates and graduated from Lakewood High in 1977.

I never understood the reaction from those poor kids to a simple hello.  They seemed horrified and terrified and just plain paralyzed.  After reading some of these messages I am begining to get a sense of the true horror that they went through.  I feel selfish for feeling sorry for MYSELF when a seedling, former friend, would not speak to me anymore.

Such a waste.  I was sorry then for those kids and I am still sorry now.

Thank God my folks were too independent to put us under the control of other people!

Thanks for posting. I've always wondered what the typical onlookers, old friends and neighbors, made of the whole thing.

Don't feel bad about it. We were dealing w/ expert dementors. We all were tossed into a gun fight w/ not even a knife.

Now, tell us a Seed story, please! Whatever springs to mind; funny, tragic, heart warming, odd... whatever made an impression.

The present system is among the most impractical imaginable, if the facilitation of learning is your aim.

A SEED story........The first one that comes to mind is about a girl that kept her horse at Pineview Stables.  A really sweet girl that had a paint horse.  She disappeared for awhile.  I was just beginning to figure out about this whole SEED thing.  She came back to the stables one day and I saw her out riding in the back (there were woods out there).  I rode up to her to just say hi.  She FREAKED out!  Almost jumped out of her skin.  We were in the middle of the woods!  No one was around but a few squirrels and birds.  She rode off and I followed her asking what was wrong.  She turned and tearfully said that if I didn't get away from her she would have to go back.  I sat there stunned.  I didn't have a clue as to where she had been to begin with.  Or what talking to me had to with going back somewhere.  Long story short I went back to the barn and talked to some of the older kids.  Found out all about the SEED SUCKS.  Turns out that it wasn't because I was such a druggie (at the time I think I barely knew what pot even was) but that it was because of the people that lived in my neighborhood, the people that I talked to and the people that I just plain lived around!
Over the next few years I saw more and more folks that I knew going into the SEED.  Of course that was the last I ever had to do with them.  I did not help by saying that the SEED sucks every chance I got.  I did not help those kids by speaking to them.  Now I see that I probably caused them more trouble by trying to reach out and say hi to those kids that had that 'deer caught in the headlights look'.
Well this was it for the first seed story that came to mind.  Don't know if it hurts or helps.  I am certainly glad that there is this place where folks can try to purge that part of their history.
