Landmark Forum (est) Plays hardball with the DMCA

Oh the hilarity

For those too lazy to RTFA, basically Landmark (the LGAT formerly known as est), is throwing around subpoenas using Bushie's DCMA (originally designed to protect the starving record executives from unscrupulous pre-teen music pirates), claiming they own the copyright to a French documentary exposing them as loons.  The EFF has jumped on board and is helping out with the legal action.

I don't know how this was missed on Fornits.

this wikipedia article has information on the content of the film

They settled on Nov 30th...  The poster of the documentary aggreed not to do it again.  WHAT THE FUCK!  I'm going to find that fucking thing and mirror it on my site.  I'll edit this in a bit with a link to the mirror on my site once i find it.

It's still up here in the free land of Austrailia.  No need to mirror it unless it dissappears.  i'm ripping the steam though just in case.

Watch and enjoy.  It meant the death of Landmark in Europe.

Help yourself to the torrent as well.  Let's keep this thing alive.  Once it's on torrent... it ain't going anywhere.

I'll provide a direct link to the torrent tonight after I upload it to my site.

Hmm. Another French film dealing with programs. Interesting.

I really hope to god this doesn't happen with the TB documentary.

Free speech is dying.  Google has bent over and let Landmark fuck them silly...  And BitTorrent is running, but nobody is seeding the fucking file...  This is sad.  If something is inconvenient, let a corporation send out a subpoena to censor it.  This is liberty dying.

I dont get why this was banned in the US. Did the company responsible threaten to sue?
I felt so bad for the woman who came on the doco and started to cry when she was in debate with the scientology lady. She was just devistated.

You know about file sharing, and the stink that the record industry was raising anyway.  Well the Republicans went ahead and promoted corporations to police status and, with the DCMA, allowed corportations who feel their copyrights were violated, to hand out subpoenas of their own.

Keep in mind that Landmark doesn't own the copyright to the documentary.  But since corporations now have police status, they can throw around subpoenas regardless of the evidence.  They just have to claim their copyrights were violated.  Google, YouTube, and the internet archive, with no spines of their own, happily bent over and took the videos down.  Landmark withdrew their subpoena only after they original poster agreed not to ever post that video online again.

Why did they do this?  Because the video was so damning for them that it resulted in the government shutting them down in France, as well as elsewhere in Europe.  Journalists, and free speech, gave Landmark a great big boot in the ass....  Overseas at least.

When they passed the DMCA i just knew this was going to happen.... I knew it...  Give corporations an inch...  I don't know what is worse, government or corporate censorship...  Landmark got their way essentially.  Part 1 is on the net but part 2 etc...?

I couldn't believe they were deprogramming her on the show, but it had to be done. People need to see how utterly convinced people are that these workshops help them...  and how mind-fucked... dazed... they are.

That closed eye exercise you saw.  My first time around... i faked it... My second time... i was broken... and i was that fat man...

That confrontation thing was actually pretty mild compared to most shit in program though.  They can do a lot more to kids.  They broke that lady in 45 mins...  We went through it every day.

But I thought the whole point of that law was protecting the intellectual property of the artist. In this case that would be the French Doco makers. I dont get how the company they are critiquing can be able to do this. Is it just a loophole?

The point of the law is one thing...  The potential of the law for abuse is something else entirely.  Corporations can hand out subpoenas on a whim if they claim (even fraudulently) that their copyright has been violated.
