Many have been waiting years for this one

Today ISAC negotiated a true scientific study of ALL survivors of Straight, Straight-like programs and the Theraputic Community model.

This scientific study will be conducted by a third party with researchers and doctors.

Fill out the survey on the ISAC website and send it in. Any identifying information contianed in it will be held by ISAC and NOT given to researchers . THey will use this internet study ONLY to help them build a framework for the research.

Once the framework and grant are in place they will then conduct their research into the dangers or lack therof of this treatment model, the effects if any etc.

This is the FIRST TRUE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF SURVIVORS.

THIS is what will debunk (if proven)the current treatment model. Which is currently the only approved treatment model by the US.

This includes ALL SURVIVORS OF STRAIGHT ANY STRAIGHT LIKE PROGRAM , SYNANON OR ANY OTHER THERAPUTIC COMMUNITY BASED TREATMENT CENTER. So, if you know survivors from any of those types of programs have them fill out the survey..

It will take years but the impact will be HUGE,if the research reveals what we think it will.

ISAC are not scientific researchers we can tell you that this study will take place over the course of the next few years. ISAC does not know how they will develop the framework from our little survey but apparently they can use the answers and comments to create a base or framework for a study and go from there.

We want to personally thank ALL the volunteers that worked so hard to FINALLY after twenty plus years make this happen.

Let the study begin......

to fill out the survey go to

and click on Survivor Survey

Once Again, Thank you to ALL of you who helped make this happen.

Do you have a source that has stated somewhere that this is the "only approved treatement model by the US"?
I would like to take a look.

I don't know if this passed or not, but here's the legislation as proposed in 2001

(j) TREATMENT TYPE- The Therapeutic Community model shall be used as a basis for all adolescent residential substance abuse treatment programs established under this section, which shall be characterized by--

(1) the self-help dynamic, requiring youth to participate actively in their own treatment;

(2) the role of mutual support and the therapeutic importance of the peer therapy group;

(3) a strong focus on family involvement and family strengthening;

(4) a clearly articulated value system emphasizing both individual responsibility and responsibility for the community; and

(5) an emphasis on development of positive social skills.

NPR ran a piece on the role of Multidimensional Family Therapy in the treatment of adolescent drug abuse this past week.  If you would like to take a look and listen to the story go to
http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/feature ... index.html
The program examined is through a University in Miami, FL.  What the program describes is a technique also known as "intensive wrap around services" and has been gaining popularity in a wide range of social services because of its effectiveness and respect for, and the resulting "buy-in" of the client. The statistics, (as they do exist!) show this to be considerably more effective than residential treatment.
I have been telling the parents I come across who are looking at spending massive amounts for cultish residential treatment that they would be better off spending the lump sum on having a social worker come live with the family for a month to two.  This Multidimensional Therapy doesn't go quite that far, but the child and family have access to thier own private counselor anytime of day or night;  one that will give rides to and from school because therapy in an office is a profoundly incomprehensive way of dealing with something so complicated as a family.
Those who lurk the parent boards....spread the word!

Do these "private counselors" have professional, psychology or psychiarty degrees? There is a good reason why it's called "family therapy," because it should involve the entire family, from start to finish. Sending any kid to a counselor by themselves will make them defensive and prone to shut down. We know that already. I'm so tired of hearing about parental irresponsability catering  services. When will we as a nation raise our own children?

P.S. What does the car-pooling service have to do with anything? Sounds like a babysitters job to me. How much do these cost?
