drug use among teens
« on: July 31, 2006, 06:29:37 AM »
i wanted to waste some time at work today so i thought i would look up some stats on bad to the bone american teenagers.
i went to the Drug Free America site hoping to be alarmed and horrified only to be really diappointed. Your kids are not that bad at all!

Last year only 6.2% of 12th graders surveyed had even tried meth. In a class of 30 kids that means only 1.86 kids. And here I thought it was a pandemic. Boy did the good people at Time magazine & Oprah hoodwink me.

As to the heroin abusing high school kids, turns out it was 2.0%. i guess wilderness therapy wont have to trouble itself with complex smack detox programmes so thats good news.

What about good old fashioned stoners? I guessed at least 1/2 of your 12th graders had done that been there. Afterall schools for the naughty & wilderness gulags do a pretty good trade from these kids dont they? Once again it was only 33%
that means in a class of 30 9.9% had gone into the loos for a quick puff!

Where are all these kids who's lives are in danger?

I tried to find the website that deals with kids who are just obnoxious and who give their families way too much lip but there is none. There are also no stats adressing the very serious issue of girls who have slutty myspace accounts. Can you believe there are also none on boys who get report cards saying that they could do better if they applied themselves more! Go figure? Someone really ought to set up some kind of foundation!

The fear mongering is unwarranted.

Same with Suicide. Google 'teen suicide' and you?ll find a slew of sites that will tell you that teen suicide is on the rise, when there is nothing to substantiate it. Parents visit those sites and take it as gospel, then perpetrate the fear mongering.

There is a growing concern about the sale and misuse of rx drugs.

Of the suicides still occurring, and kids shooting up their schools, most were on an anti-depressant or several psych drugs.

Yes. i am actually from a country which has recently seen a dramatic increase in the rate of youth suicide
http://www.nisu.flinders.edu.au/pubs/bu ... 15sup.html

The other group who have recently had a lot of atttention for mental health issues over here are middle aged guys.

having said that even with the increase the numbers of suicidal kids are not that high. The major focus of the campaign surrounding this has been an increase in counselling services & huge education campaigns. One thing I note is that the focus is on the idea that if someone is self harming it is a cry for help which needs to be taken seriously. There is no mention of the word manipulation. I just hope that this absurd "tough love" movement does not capture the public's imagination here

Do you have more recent data? That was for 1995. What has happend in the past 10 years? The US numbers were higher at that time to, but have been decreasing since.
Those numbers are for 15 to 24 year olds. Organizations here frequently include the 19-24 age group when they want/need the situation for youth to appear worse than it is.

Sorry i should have looked more closely. Since the mid 90's it has been slowly declining here too. bear in mind that we have a tiny population so the numbers are probably a little more significant. Most of the data is from 04 whixh is when the last census was taken

The biggest group is young men but not necessarily teenagers. One site also has some interesting comparisons between Australia and the us in terms of adolescent drug and alcohol use. Apparently our kids are boozier but less likely to take drugs at an early age.

Mike Males has been saying this for quite some time. His website is worth a look.

I particularly recomend his book Scapegoat Generation.

I have read most of his articles but not the book yet. Will need to order it thnrough amazon.
As to the age range question, most australian stats referring to "youth" encompass the group 15-25 unless they are specifically delaing with a single age group issue ie ;binge drinking in school kids, in which case they will often look at a specific age group. EG i think one of the iste mentioned surveys of 9th grade kids in Seattle and melbourne.
While the Australian tabloid media does it's share of kiddie bashing, & our conservative govt has talked a lot obout the dangers of drugs, the focus of most anti drug education campaigns look more at harm minimisation than penalty.
I think there may also be a cultural difference in the approach to drinking. By the time most kids are 16 here it is pretty widely excepted that in private venues (non licenced) they will drink. Most of the alcohol education campaigns have centred around the dangers of drink driving and to a lesser extend binge drinking.
