I have always advocated visiting the schools.  I personally visited the school my daughter attended and had lunch with he kids, spoke to a few of them at random and sat in on one of their informal groups at the end of the day.
Like Botched mentioned, take a good look at the kids and if they do not look happy or you get the sense that the kids are not benefitting then this would not be a good place to send your child.
Look at it like it was any other place you would be entrusting your child to i.e daycare, private school
