Let the EVIDENCE guide you...don't believe the hype

http://www.colorado.edu/cspv/blueprints ... rview.html

In 1996, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV), at the University of Colorado at Boulder, with funding from the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, designed and launched a national violence prevention initiative to identify violence prevention programs that are effective. The project, called Blueprints for Violence Prevention, has identified 11 prevention and intervention programs that meet a strict scientific standard of program effectiveness. Program effectiveness is based upon an initial review by CSPV and a final review and recommendation from a distinguished Advisory Board, comprised of seven experts in the field of violence prevention. The 11 model programs, called Blueprints, have been effective in reducing adolescent violent crime, aggression, delinquency, and substance abuse. Another 18 programs have been identified as promising programs. To date, more than 600 programs have been reviewed, and the Center continues to look for programs which meet the selection criteria.

Not a single program mentioned is a residential program.  This goes to show that the severe problems that afflict our youth can be effectively dealt with in our communities.

Thanks for effectively showing that violent, drug-addicted children can, and must be, treated in our community and do not require residential programs whatsoever.

This is a great reference! :nworthy:

There are no controlled studies (randomized) to show the effectiveness of residential treatment programs for youth long-term.  While there may be some short-term changes, on the whole, the youth return to their presenting behaviors.

The idea of bootcamps has actually shown a long-term  increase in problems for youth as reported by the surgeon general's report.

So please when you are looking for a program for adolescents, ask what their long-term research shows?  ask to see the published articles in Nationally recongnized journals (not self-published journals ).

It's your money and your kids future...you owe them the best.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Are all of these residential programs out there pretending to do something when it seems to be all hot-air... why aren't these other programs getting attention like they should?  I don't see them being mentioned on Oprah.

Oprah advertised for STRAIGHT INC. back in the day. Now, Dr. Phil rides her coattails and sent a kid to Provo Canyon School, but then turns around and yells at a parent for putting a kid in WWASPS.

All in all, fuck Oprah, fuck Dr. phil, and in general fuck TV personalities telling us how to live our lives.

Anybody who listens to a TV personality for advice on major life issues is a moron.

The only purpose Oprah serves is to give very bored people something to laugh at.
