ugh....

I am so glad to not be part of this. Up here in lovely Canada, we have our problems, but this I'm happy to say is foreign. I grew up going to school as one of only 3 caucasian kids in my class at a time. The other kids were from everywhere: Sudan, Lebanon, Mexico, China, Korea, Eritrea, etc, etc. Some had immigrated quite recently, others were third or fourth generation (my family is second generation Irish). I have never heard someone tell a racist joke in real life. Never. I've heard the occasional blonde joke, and that's bad enough.

We have two official languages, left over from when two countries invaded and occupied this territory. I speak both fluently and so do many, many of the people I know.

My country has a refugee policy, and sound immigration laws. Within the next couple years, our population growth will come exclusively from immigration as our birth rate isn't high enough - and that's something most of us are okay with.

We have universal health care, no matter who you are, or how much money you make, when you need help you get it.

We have social assistance that is available for all in time of need.

We don't mind people moving here and "taking our jobs" because we have an amazing, thriving economy that has room for many, many more people than we have.

Where I live in Alberta, Tim Horton's (like Starbucks but a quarter the price) is literally recruiting from all over the world because they don't have enough staff here.

Construction workers make 18-30$/hour, skilled trades up to 60$/hr...

Diversity is strength.
Compassion is strength.

And no one wants to blow us off the map.

Yep, our country might be similar if we werent spending billions a year on useless wars.

Yep, you Kanooks (sp?) have got it all...

But your comment about..'Diversity is strength, Compassion is strength'...that should REALLY send us a message.  I've only been in the US for a few months, and I can't say that I've seen that at all...too many foreigners going at each other and the natives and everyone just fed up with it...Maybe THAT'S what we need...compassion in the diversity...I mean, hell!  We can't change it anymore...the damage is done, so we might as well at least make the best of it!

So just let more illegals in? Yeah, that would really make things better here. A nice thought to want to be compassionate, but no fucking way would that ever pan out the way you think that it would..

Bush fucked shit up when he passed whatever that was allowing illegals to work here, thus pandering to corporations who wish to exploit "Manuel Labor" and fuck up our economy. Everyone's so focused on the Iraq war that we fail to acknowledge the role that Pumpkinhead, Jr. played in screwing that up.

Well, I'm all for border control, in fact, closing them entirely from the South would be a good thing!  Can I tell you how sick I am of hearing Spanish??!!  'Press 1 for English'...WTF????  I don't know of any other country in the world with that message when you're calling any business!

Compassion for those who are already here wouldn't be the worst thing, would it?  They're not going back...at least that I can see, so we might as well get used to it or bust.

I thought most Americans weren't really following the war in Iraq.  Maybe another stereotype of Americans, but I thought that if 'we' were really so against it, it would stop.  The 'voice of the people' and all that.  Maybe I just gotta get over the culture shock of coming back 'home'...

We just bitch about everything and nothing ever really changes.

Uh... again, up here in Canada it's always "press one for English, appuyez sur le deux pour francais". Also - Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, China, etc, etc are multilingual.

You are one lovely bigot, you know that.

Well despite skewed perspective or sugar-coating or what-have-you, it has been a focal point in the media..hell, it seems like it's all they ever talk about. Voice of the people, now that's funny.

I'm not sure how what I said has now been taken as bigotry.

I recently came back to the States after having lived for over a decade in a foreign country.  I've seen a lot of changes here, heard a lot of complaining, and I know how things are 'over there'.  That does not make me a bigot.  At least in America we have the right to say what we think, unlike other places, like Germany.  Of course, France can speak up, though.

And in most places in Europe, there are signs in English and other languages, but on the phone, you do not have the option to press '1' for it.  Most other countries speak English, so I guess they don't feel the need to have that as an option on the phone.  Having only Spanish is unfair to the other foreign language speaking minorities we have here.  Then we should say 'For Korean press 3'???   'Arabic press 4'?? And so on???

From what you've said, Canada sounds like a Utopic place.

Ya know, I've been given the whole berating up and down, from foreigners who don't like our government.  I tried, mostly in vain, to defend my country and it's sometimes inane decisions just for the simple fact that I'm an American and love my homeland.  Some things are just unexplainable and inexcusable...like the Iraq war.  I thought, from what I heard in the news, that we were going to start pulling our troops out.  And if that's not true, then why not?  I can't help but think of it like Vietnam in a way.  Sorry for the comparaison, but it's that same quesiton of 'why are we there anyway?'.  And why even now can't the people let their voices be heard, if they are so against it???

We really are not well liked.
